2 1 Need to Know First Time in Dubai Visa: Indian travellers need a valid visa to enter the UAE. Apply well in advance. Passport: Make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months after your date of entry. While travelling keep it in the hotel safe and carry a photocopy with you. NOL Cards: Get yourself a NOL Card (smart card) which allows you to pay for all forms of public transport, including metro, buses and water taxis. ADVANCE PLANNING Three to one month before departure: Start shopping for airline fares, booking accommodation, ensure proper validity of your passport and apply for visa. Three weeks before departure: Book your desert safari trip and any cultural shows available online. One day before departure: Check your ticket printout and visa documents. Check airline policy for baggage allowance. WHAT TO PACK The weather of Dubai, as with any city in the middle of a desert, varies hugely from season to season. While summers can be oppressively hot and humid, winters can be surprisingly chilly. It is wise to look at a weather forecast site before you go and pack accordingly. However, we recommend you carry these: Light wash-and-wear clothes. Slip-on shoes, slippers, sandals. Sunscreen, hat, shades, water and dust- proof money/passport bag. A scarf for women to cover their heads in a religious place, say, Jumeirah Mosque. If you are in Dubai during winters, light sweaters and jackets. Prescription drugs (retain purchase slip). Arriving in Dubai TRANSPORT FROM DUBAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Dubai has three international terminals (all within city limits) with excellent transport facilities connecting travellers to various parts of the city. Metro: Dubai Metro operates between 6am to 12am (except on Friday 1pm–12am). Terminals 1 and 3 have direct access to the metro (Max ticket cost Dh14). Travel above the max limit is free. For detailed information, see Travellers' Helpdesk on p204 When to Go November to March: The weather is pleasant and there are lots of events happening around town. Since most tourists to Dubai arrive at this time, hotel rates tend to shoot up. April to October: Dubai turns into a sauna in the summer months. In July and August average daytime temperatures are around 430 C with 85% humidity which can easily shoot up to 480 C with 95% humidity. Just so you get a fair idea, it’s like combining the heat of Delhi with the humidity of Kolkata or Mumbai. It is easy to get bargains not only on hotel rooms but also on shopping. The Dubai Shopping Festival usually happens during the summers to promote off-season tourism. All hotels and most major shopping malls are air-conditioned. Eating in Dubai

The Street PlatterShawarmas, falafels and pani-puri jostle for attention, while a walk through Satwa, Bur Dubai or Deira is proof enough that masala chai is not going out of business despite the Starbucks at every corner. Shawarma is possibly the most widely available and arguably one of the tastiest street food items in Dubai. It makes great sense since it can be had on the go, and also because most of the better restaurants are out of range for the budget traveller.

Friday BrunchDubai loves its Friday brunch. Every weekend (which is Friday and Saturday all across the UAE) the city's population flocks to the numerous hotels serving a buffet on outdoor

terraces or beachside cafes, featuring multi-cultural fare, from steaks to sushi.

Vegetarian Options In Dubai, vegetarian food has a sizeable number of fans, mostly comprising people from the Indian subcontinent. Apart from your usual Indian cuisine, Lebanese food, which is widely available, has amazing vegetarian options. Many Indian vegetarian restaurant chains, like Rajdhani (p84), Govinda's (p84) and Saravana Bhawan (p84) operate in the UAE.

Not So Far From HomeGiven that Indians are a vast majority in the Emirates, Indian food has a special place in Dubai’s culinary scene. Dishes from Indian regional cuisines find a place of prominence in many multi-cuisine restaurants.

Despite the arrival of celebrated chefs like Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver, Sanjeev Kapoor and Vineet Bhatia, you are never really far from a mock Bedouin tent, serving a cup of ghawa (Arabic coffee), or a falafel stand.

There are skyscrapers today where once there was only sand. It is difficult to explain the otherworldliness of Sheikh Zayed Road. Within this neighbourhood you’ll find the tallest building in the world, one of the largest malls, a marine aquarium full of more than 30000 species of fish, and a sanctuary teeming with exotic birds.
