Meet the Faces of Heart
Cody Lehmann is a 16 year old boy that was born with a rare
disease called Niikawa Kuroki. There are less than 200 known
cases of this disease in the United States and everyone has
different levels of abnormalities. Cody has of had 15
operations
and the latest one was back surgery in Dec. 2009. He had an
extra vertebra that was twisted in towards his spine and if hit
hard
on his back he could have been paralyzed. He is doing well
and
attending physical therapy to strengthen his back. Cody also
gets
a growth hormone shot 6 nights a week that we hope will help
him grow a few more inches before puberty is over.
When Cody was 3 he had open heart surgery for a simple ASD
repair. The Doctors looked at the hole it was much larger
than
they expected so they had to use some of his pericardial tissue
to
repair it. It was a miracle.
Cody still has some speech challenges because of the cleft
palate
repair, the pharyngeal flap repair and the shape of his jaw.
Another major challenge, but something
Cody has accepted, is that he cannot play a contact sport because
he has horseshoe kidneys on his left
side. Cody attends Central York High School and he has always
wanted to play football for a high school
team. For the past 3 years he has been the football manager and he
recently found out that he will be
the varsity football manager for the 2010 season. This news made
Cody the happiest 16 year old in the
school.
Cody is a bright boy that loves to make other happy and everyone
that meets him loves him. Cody helps
others realize that we can be happy with the gifts that God gave us
and not take them for granted.
Here is a story that Cody wrote when he was in 5th grade.
When I Was Born
I was born on March 14, 1994. I was born with a cleft palate which
is a hole in the roof of my mouth. We
met a doctor in Syacuse, New York that who told us that I have a
disease called Niikawa Kuroki. When I
was 1 ½ years old I spent 2 weeks in the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
The doctors found out that I couldn’t
eat right so they put a feeding tube in my stomach. They also found
out that I have 2 kidneys on my left
side. When I was 3 years old, I had open heart surgery on a Friday
and when I came home on the
following Monday I wanted to go outside and play soccer. My mom and
dad wouldn’t let me. Now that I
am older I want to play football. We talked to the doctor and he
said that I shouldn’t play. I feel sad
because my dream is to play football some day.
