SMIT2008

Dear Madame or Sir,

Welcome to the 20th International Conference of the Society for Medical Innovation and Technology – SMIT2008! This conference provides a unique forum where scientists and medical professionals from around the world have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and information in the field of medical innovation.

We have received about 120 contributions for the scientific program, submitted from 23 countries – from Europe, America, Asia and Africa. As listed below, the following topics are covered by the submitted contributions:

• Tumor Ablation and Interventional Oncology • Endoluminal Surgery • NOTES and NOSCAR • Surgical Manipulators and Image-guided Robotics • Hybrid OR, Work Flow and Systems Integration • Nanotechnology and Microsystems in Medicine • New Instruments and New Materials • E-Health • MRI Safety • Cellular Surgery • Navigation and Augmented Reality • Model based Therapy, Medical Simulation and Training

The conference program consists of three Plenary Presentations (including the “John Wickham Lecture”), 23 sessions organized in two parallel tracks, two Lunch Symposia as well as a Poster Ses-sion with about 25 Posters. In addition an exhibition of new achievements from industry as well as three dedicated workshops will round off the conference.

The conference site for this year’s SMIT at the Campus of the University of Vienna had been the location of the former famous General Hospital that was opened in 1784. In research, the General Hospital always played an important role. Personalities of international standing of the Vienna Medical School, from Ignaz Semmelweis (1818-1865), Theodor Billroth (1829-1894) to Karl Land-steiner (1868-1943) worked here. At the end of the 1990ies, the new Campus of the University of Vienna was created at the site of the General Hospital, which is located just across the street.

The huge area from the 18th century was then redesigned with interesting architectural solutions, and became the home of different cultural studies departments. Located in a green area near the city centre and easily accessible by public transport, the campus provides excellent facilities, including all the necessary infrastructure and professionalism to successfully host a medical con-vention of this size.

Aside from the congress, you should take some time to experience the Vienna’s numerous historic venues, enjoy its atmosphere of hospitality and enchanting music, explore the parks, lakes and tree-lined alleys, and discover the latest achievements in art and architecture. We are confident that your stay in Vienna will be a memorable scientific and social experience.

We express our sincere gratitude to the SMIT society, to the members of the SMIT steering com-mittee for their support, the review board and the members of the local organizing committee for their invaluable work in helping the preparation of this conference. We are also deeply thankful to the many volunteers who contributed time and effort to prepare and conduct this event. Our special thanks go to all sponsors and supporters as well as to our organizing partner KONGRESS- UND KULTURMANAGEMENT GMBH. But above all, our thanks go to all authors who did the re-search, prepared their contributions, and came to Vienna to share their results with the interested research community. We hope, that the conference attendees will find this event professionally rewarding.

Ferenc A. JoleszDr. Jolesz has achieved international recognition as one of the great innovators and leaders in cutting edge research in magnetic resonance imaging and im-age-guided therapy. Before moving to the United States in 1979, he completed his medical training (including a Residency in Neurosurgery) in Budapest, Hungary. Upon arrival in Boston, he served as a Research Fellow in Neurology and completed a Residency in Diagnostic Radiology and Fellowship in Neuroradiology. Since 1988 he has been Director of the Division of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. In 1993, he es-tablished the Image-Guided Therapy Program at the Brigham & Women‘s Hospi-tal, which includes an internationally recognized intraoperative MRI facility, the Surgical Planning Laboratory, and the Therapeutic Ultrasound Laboratory-the center of groundbreaking therapeutic technology development. In 1995 he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, later appointed B. Leonard Holman Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and Vice Chairman for Research at the Department of Radiology of Brigham and Women‘s Hospital in 2000. In 2002, Dr. Jolesz was appointed Director of the Neu-roimaging Core of the Harvard Center for Neurodegeneration and Repair. He is also the 2002 recipient of the Outstanding Researcher Award presented by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and of the Gold Medal awarded by the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

Moshe Y. FlugelmanDr. Flugelman, an interventional cardiologist, is appointed as head of the In-Patient Cardiology, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Lady Davis Carmel Medical Center, in Haifa, Israel. He is also an expert in engineering blood vessels by gene and cell therapy. As he believes, tissue-engineering hold a great promise to provide angiogenesis therapy and vascular grafts that will be durable and biocompatible. In his pres-entation, he will describe the field of therapeutic angiogenesis in the context of tissue engineering using cell and gene therapies.

Daniel A. RüfenachtProf. Rüfenacht has graduated 1981 at the Medical School, University of Berne, Switzerland, and received his MD in 1984. From 1981-1987 he spent his Postgradu-ate Training in Radiology and Neuroradiology at the University Hospital of Berne and in Interventional Neuroradiology at Lariboisière Hospital, University VII of Paris, France. From 1988 to 1992, he continued his training within the USA at the Univer-sity of Wisconsin, the MAYO Clinic in Rochester and at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Back in Switzerland, in 1992 he was appointed professor of Neuro-radiology at the University Hospital of Geneva, which he is leading as head of Neu-rointerventional Division since 2007. His research is devoted to development of image-guided minimally invasive treatment concerning neurovascular diseases, tumors and back pain and he has published more than 180 peer reviewed papers. He also has been involved in 11 national and 2 European research grants.

Biocompatibility. Functionality. Safety. These are the qualities that Polyzene®-F bestows on any implantable medical device treated with the revolutionary biostable surface technology from CeloNova BioSciences. Polyzene®-F creates hemocompatible, anti-infl ammatory, bacterial-resistant, and lubricious surfaces for medical devices, making them safer, slicker, and virtually invisible to the body.

Polyzene®-F Delivers Biocompatibility

Inhibits the infl ammatory cascade

Does not evoke macrophages

Maintains an anti-thrombogenic and anti-thrombotic surface

Resists bacterial infections

Polyzene®-F Delivers Functionality

Reduces friction and improves glide rate

Can deliver and release pharmaceuticals and other agents

Biostable when applied as thin as a few nanometers, as a thick or thin fi lm, as a coating, and other ways

Adheres to most natural, synthetic, and biological materials, surfaces and substrates

Polyzene®-F Delivers Safety

Forms a surface that will not activate platelets

Promotes healthy cellular growth

Provides a hydrophobic surface that will not swell or crack

Will not degrade into harmful components

The Future is Polyzene®-F.Polyzene®-F can improve problems associated with medical devices today: stent restenosis, thrombosis, platelet activation and agglomeration, foreign body reaction, poor osseointegration, capsular contracture, and more.
