GROWTH OF INDIAN PHARMA SECTORThe saying Health is Wealth is very true in the sense that only if there is health in general and for scientists in particular, the inventions leading to development in the Pharma sector can take place. The term significantly is also true, as we could see that from the traditional healthcare system - Ayurveda, Unani medicines, well known in India and China, the Pharmaceutical industry has come of age to be reckoned with as one of the leading players in Allopathic medicines too domestically and globally to meet the growing export market demands. Though Alembic in Gujarat was one of the oldest small Pharma units to be established way back in 1907 at Baroda, it was M/s. Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceutical Works Limited that came up in the organized sector in the 1930s for producing various pharma formulations in India; it still continues to be in the sector. Since then, there has not been looking back in the growth of Pharma industry in the country.

India continues to play a crucial role in manufacturing various critical, high quality and low-cost medicines for Indian and global markets. It supplies 50 to 60 percent of global demand for vaccines (including ARVs). Over the last 5 years, 35 to 38 percent of total ANDAs approved have been filed from Indian sites. Indias pharmaceutical market has grown rapidly over the last decade. Despite recent headwinds, a stable growth of 5-7% was observed last year. India is likely to become one of the Top 3 pharma markets by 2030.

GUJARAT FOREFRONT IN PHARMA SECTORGujarat Accounting for nearly 42 percent share of Indias pharmaceutical turnover, 22 percent of its drug exports and 20 percent of its chemicals output, Gujarats pharmaceutical industry has evolved in to an innovation-driven, knowledge-focused industry. Going forward, to attain a leading position in the global pharma industry.

Growing ease of doing business has shaped Gujarat into one of the most favoured destinations globally for pharmaceutical investments. With introduction of various initiatives and a strong hold in medicine and biotechnology stratum, Gujarat has emerged as a pharmaceutical hub in India.

According to the UBM India report global pharma market is presently estimated to be over $1 trillion in value, of which the US accounts for over 40%, followed by the European Union and Japan. The global pharmaceutical market is divided into patented pharma products and generics. Generics market currently account for over 45% of the global market by volume and about 20% by value. In India, about 70% revenue comes from generics, 21% from over-the-counter drugs and the rest from patented drugs.

Indian pharmaceuticals market is the third largest in terms of volume and 13th largest in terms of value. Indias exports are expected to account for 72% of the total Pharma production and reach a value of $40 billion by 2020. India, currently has second highest number of US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved plants after the US and accounts for 22% of overall US FDA approved facilities.

The Indian Pharmaceutical industry has been growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 15% over the last five years and has significant growth opportunities. However, for the industry to sustain this growth rate till 2020, companies will have to rethink their business strategy. They will have to follow new business models and think of innovative ideas to service their evolving customers faster and better.

India's cost of production is significantly lower than that of the US and almost half of that of Europe and that gives a competitive edge to India over others. Pharma companies will continue to grow both organically and inorganically through alliances and partnerships. They will continue to focus on improving operational efficiency and productivity. Developments in the health insurance, medical technology and mobile telephony can help the growth of the pharma industry by removing financial and physical barriers to health care access in India.
