The Rectory Kirkby Malzeard, Ripon HG4 3SL Dear Friends, Many of us who received the Covid vaccine in a vaccination centre will have

been aware of how well-ordered the whole procedure was. The car parking

attendants, greeters, and those administering the vaccine were all calm,

warm, and helpful. Many of them were also volunteers, offering their time

and expertise in the name of public service.

The giving of service is one of the most satisfactory actions available to

humankind, and it is at its most rewarding when performed purely for the

benefit of others without seeking reward. When service is performed simply

in response to a need, then the act itself takes on a whole new dimension:

one of love rather than duty.

In John’s Gospel we learn ‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only

begotten Son.’ An act of service that is pivotal to Christian faith: a supreme

sacrifice brought about through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus

Christ. A selfless act of service founded on his love for us. God’s love is far

reaching and never ending, and we can participate in, and share that love, by

serving others with love. When we do so, it not only fulfils a need but also

strengthens our faith. Service becomes faith and love made visible.

Throughout the past fourteen months, there have been numerous examples

of people performing all kinds of acts of service, many of which have taken

place in our own communities, such as checking on a neighbour, making a

phone call, shopping, or simply saying a kind word when passing in the

street. As we begin to return to some sort of normality, it is worth

remembering the importance of all the acts of service that have taken place,

but also to think about how we may continue to be of service to each other

and to God.

With love and prayers

Liz

If you are not computer-savvy or you'd rather follow a service on your own we can let you have it via email or by paper through your letter box. A healthy number of people are doing this at 10 am each week to build the sense that we are all worshipping together. Email or telephone Ian for more details.

If you have any questions about the services, please contact Ian. A listening ear from the hospice Even with the prospect of slowly exiting lockdown, many of us may be feeling low, isolated or anxious about the days and weeks to come. We want to let you know that our Just ‘B’ Hear to Help community line is here for you, seven days a week, from 8am in the morning to 8pm, with a team of experienced, caring volunteers ready to listen and support. Call us on 01423 856799. We’re all in this together and no concern is too small. The helpline is available for children, young people and adults across Yorkshire.

It was with great pleasure that we were able to meet again over tea and scones at the Olive Tree Cafe but there was much catching up to do before we got round to discussing "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie". Once we did get to it, the discussion was lively and wide-ranging. We talked about our own school days; the manipulation of pupils by their teachers; women who are aware of their own destiny; self-knowledge and self-discovery. Some of us found it amusing, others quite the reverse. Was there too much repetition? Were the characters credible in the way they developed from childhood into womanhood? As is usually the case our final conclusion was that some of us liked it and some of us didn`t, but it certainly gave us plenty to think and talk about. This month we are going to read "The Hanging Garden" by Ian Rankin and very much hope to be able to discuss it again face to face Anne Carrick

Girlguiding Fountains The Brownies finished their zoom meetings with a virtual sleepover. Activity bags provided all the ingredients and resources for the challenges and the kit list for the event. The dens were superb and we enjoyed looking at the range of ideas. We practised keeping our belongings tidy and setting things out as we would in a hall. The girls cooked their own tea and breakfast using the microwave, whist in the meetings, and the hot chocolate before for supper was delicious. The leaders were not woken early, although they did find the floor somewhat less comfortable than their beds.

All our Fountains units are meeting outdoors again. This felt strange at first as we learned to manage the social distancing, sanitising routines and discovered many had grown taller. However, everyone has managed well and many games, along with the programme, have been adapted for the current restrictions and outdoors. We have discovered that Tuesday is the wettest day of the week, but that has not deterred the girls, who have arrived to make their promise, dance to ‘singing in the rain’, follow a maze, complete fitness challenges and discover more about our communities, cultures and reflect on our beliefs and values. Fountains Playgroup & Pre-School

The staff, committee, parents and children of Fountains Playgroup & Pre-School

have been amazing through this difficult time we have experienced. We were all

very excited as we welcomed all our children into our group on the 8th March, the

children came in so confidently and have had lots of fun with their friends. The staff

and parents are working together to ensure social distancing, cleaning of

equipment and touch points to help reduce any risk.

We have had a busy start to our summer term where we have welcomed 6 new

starters into our group; I wish you all many happy days as part of our Fountains

family.

In February we celebrated 25 years of Fountains Playgroup & Pre-School being

registered, and caring for the children in our community. We look back on all the

children we have had through our door and all the learning we have had together

Page 6: 0xx June 2021 THE FOUNTAIN

6

over the years, it’s been an amazing 25 years with lots of fun and laughter, tears,

strong relationships and a new building.

We are holding a wheel’a’thon this month; parents have their sponsor forms now.

Please can I ask you to sponsor the children of Fountains Playgroup to encourage

them to achieve as many laps as possible during the event. The staff will be

cheering them on as they take part in their laps and as they cross the line the

chequered flag will be flying.

We have an unwanted clothes/ garment collection called Bag2school. This is on

Thursday 24th June. Please bag up any unwanted items of clothing, curtains, shoes,

towels, bedding (No duvets or pillows), bags etc and drop them at playgroup

23/24th June. The more items/ bags we collect, the more money raised for our

Playgroup, to allow us to buy resources to enhance the children’s learning and

development. Please spread the word to family and friends.

Take care of each other.

Kirkby Malzeard CE Primary School

Mental Health Awareness Week took place from

10th – 16th May 2021 and the theme was 'Nature'.

The children have been exploring how being

mentally and physically healthy is really important and thinking

about how spending time in the great outdoors in nature can

help us to keep happy and

healthy.

Our learning…

• Acorn Class. The

children have been

making fantastic

‘journey sticks’ as

part of their literacy

work, which will help

them to retell the

story of 'Rain Before

Rainbows'. Reading is hugely beneficial to mental

wellbeing, as is spending time in the company of animals.

The children have been practising their letter-writing and

sent letters to Mrs Taylor, Headteacher, petitioning for a

school pet. Suggestions ranged from a Hammerhead

shark or goldfish, to cheetahs, leopards, eagles, kittens or

a frog! The children were asked to carefully consider what

care each animal may require.

• Oak Class. The children have been getting out in nature

and observing the changeable weather conditions

closely, which has provoked lots of discussion in

Page 14: 0xx June 2021 THE FOUNTAIN

14

geography lessons. Luckily the rain has not stopped their

gardening efforts! The children have been monitoring the

progress of their garden and have noticed the potatoes

growing. Their next job will be to cover them with compost

again to encourage growth. The children have been

learning what plants need to grow and are responsible for

taking care of their garden.

• Palm Class. The children began a new topic recently in

geography and have been learning about ‘The Water

Cycle.’ They discovered lots of new and unusual

vocabulary in connection with this topic and were excited

to find out the meaning of each word. The children

enjoyed time outside, making their own ‘Water Cycle in a

Bag!’

• Cedar Class. The pupils conducted a very special online

meeting on ‘MS Teams’ with the UK Parliament and found

out all about how Parliament works and how it is run. The

initial part of the meeting was with two members of the UK

Parliament Education Team and the latter was with Julian

Smith, MP for Ripon and Skipton, with whom they enjoyed

a brilliant ‘Question and Answer’ session. The children's

questions were fantastic and challenging; Julian Smith

was extremely impressed with the children and felt there

may be future politicians in the class! Everyone was

extremely proud of the pupils and their engagement and

enthusiasm.

Collective Worship. The children have been thinking about the

Christian value of ‘Kindness’ in Collective Worship this half term.

They have been considering what ‘kindness’ looks like; how to

Page 15: 0xx June 2021 THE FOUNTAIN

15

be kind, respectful and inclusive, and the meaning of integrity.

The pupils have loved finding out about how young people

around the globe have been living out the value of kindness

and making a difference in the world. They have all been

inspired to make some small changes to their own lives too.

Pupils and staff shared some really special outdoor prayer space

worship sessions altogether in their ‘bubbles;’ such a special time

to reflect and share.

The young Collective Worship leaders at school are full of super

ideas to take Collective Worship ideas further next half term!

There are signs of a slow return to normality in Mickley as lockdown is eased

nationally. The village hall is in demand again for bookings and the Mickley

Boys’ Club lunch took place on 20th May.

On 9th May we celebrated the first service inside church for several months

with a short communion led by Rev Ian Kitchen. Despite government

restrictions preventing singing within the church, the congregation found their

full voice outside (and unaccompanied!) in the churchyard. Thank you to all

who have volunteered to be on the flower rota for the next six months and to

those who were prepared to join the monthly tidying of the churchyard in

early May, a willingness that was ultimately frustrated by the weather rather

than Covid. The next tidying sessions will be on the second Saturday of each

month throughout the summer.

The annual church meetings took place on 20th May when Frances Cole and

Roger Higson stood down as churchwardens and Grace Kirk and Judith

Hooper stood down as members of the PCC. We thank them warmly for all

their support and work in the church during their period of office. Brenda

May, Judy Wright and Louise Liddle were elected to the PCC; Tom Ramsden

and Peter Mason were elected as churchwardens.

Mickley

Page 17: 0xx June 2021 THE FOUNTAIN

17

One casualty of lockdown is Mickley’s biennial Open Gardens, due in late

June. At the time of planning for the event in early February there was too

much uncertainty over lockdown so the decision was taken to postpone for

one year.

The Mickley 100 Club May draw had not taken place at the time of going to

press but April’s winners were: Grace Kirk, Judith Hooper and Richard

Lockey.

If you are passing through Mickley do pause at the top of the hill at the east

end of the village near to Mount Pleasant Cottage to admire the beautiful

new seat installed by John and Brenda May. It is dedicated to the memory of

John’s sister, Margaret and will provide a welcome opportunity for walkers

and ramblers to rest tired feet.

Patricia Harling

Yellow Ballerinas of Spring

It fluttered its lemon-coloured wings cheekily as it crossed the garden’s hedges to

show off its new found life, having emerged from the alder buckthorn abode on the

hillside. The brimstone danced onwards yet again for the fifth time in a wet spring,

its numbers having tripled in three years. The very thorny buckthorn tree, despite

the roe deer’s fondness for its bark, had created a safe haven for more yellow

ballerinas aflutter. Next on stage, on a warm mid-day spring moment, twisting

twirling tortoiseshell butterflies, excited at feeling dry and warmer, followed orange

tips in search of nectar snacks and fast-food eateries of the garlic mustard flowers.

Bumble bees jazzing through the pulmonaria flowers, blues and pinks that wobble

with their activity. All focused on food and staying the spring despite the fact that

it’s wet and cold. Then in from Africa flew migrants, the willow warblers and

whitethroats thrilled at the hedgerow standing wide and tall to offer refuge, nectar

and rest in safety. The resident blue, great and marsh tits welcome them, sharing

Page 18: 0xx June 2021 THE FOUNTAIN

18

their hedgerow space as room a plenty. The dawn chorus reached Wagnerian

symphonic proportions at the early morning sunrise around 5am and many were

still singing at mid-day and into the afternoon. Then more migrants, exhausted

swallows arrived at the end of their 8000-mile journey collapsing in undressed

bushes, still with leaves to come. Thin, weary, hanging like desiccated fruit from a

tree, paused, until a moment of sunshine brings out the insects. Then they

swooped and flew with energy as they gorge briefly on them. A long journey to cold

generating climes as the gulf stream moves southwards and draws in cold chilling

arctic air. A challenge now to raise a brood in the longstanding family breeding

places as their food supply shrinks across the fields.

The song thrush added its melodic soprano arias, fed on snails who sneakily hide

themselves behind cobble stones of flower and vegetable beds. Investigative beaks

find the snails secret places and leave devastated remains of empty battered shells

around the garden. Primrose sunflowers brighten the churchyard grounds, native

blue bells push through earth to ring their delicate bells despite wind and rain.

Spring brings in much change and rich diversity of the earth’s shrinking lives, hoping

to renew families and life. Cuckoo’s calls from last year still resonant at the wonder

of their journeys from the Congo to be here in harmony with us. The Mickley oak

looks on at another spring.
