PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE.
Brethren of the Michigan Conference, another Conference year
has passed and again we are assembled, this time in the beautiful
leafy grove of Midland Park, where the God of Nature speaks to us
in His creation. We are here in part at least to compare the workof the past year with those that have preceded it, and to plan for the
future as well. I am glad to report that new churches are beingbuilt, old ones repaired and splendid parsonages are being provided
for pastors. Salaries are being increased and from the material
point of view there is much to encourage. Four of our circuits areon the Recorder Roll. This should be increased to twenty at least,
and I trust will be the coming year. A good percentage of the benevolences have been secured and the interest in Adrian Collge is grow
ing, which is as it should be.
V
MINUTES OF THE SIXTY-SIXTH SESSION OF
Spiritually, I believe there is a growth if we may judge from thenumber of revivals and accessions to the churches that have been re
ported.
Our number has again been lessened by the departure of our
dear Bro. Cramer, one of the oldest members of our Conference, and
of Bro. Wm. Gray. Because of this we mourn with those whose hearts
are now so tender, but not as those who have no hope. May the
families be comforted by the grace of our God.
It was made my duty to report the work of the Ministerial Association. I have to say the meeting was one of the best I have attended. This was due to the fact that the ministers present, thirty in num
ber, were so willing to bear a part in the service, only three beingexcused from presenting their subjects, having given good satisfactory reasons for the same. I would urge a more general attendanceat these meetings.
Our future is encouraging. Some works are being divided into
two and are growing. There are at present two churches of other
denominations that are being offered us at a nominal price. Each of
these are in good towns and would make good accessions to our
Conference. I would advise their purchase. In order to meet thedemands that are upon us as a Conference, I would recommend that
each pastor requested by this body to set apart one Sabbath in Novem
ber of each year as church extension day and take pledges for this
benevolence, having first made the people intelligent as to its ac
complishment in the past and its purpose for the future. I consider
that no fund in our Conference is of more importance than this. Wish
ing you all a pleasant and prosperous year, I am yours in the Master,s work,
W. C. HARGER, President.

OBITUARY.
Dearly Beloved: It is with sadness that we record that since ourlast meeting two of our number have passed from labor to reward.
These are Revs. D. S. Cramer and Wm. Gray.
Rev. D. S. Cramer united with this conference at its session of
1864. While he served several charges, he lived on his farm and
there reared his splendid family. The most of his ministerial work,
however, was spent on the charge on which he lived, giving great
assistance to his pastors. He traveled for miles to preach funeral
sermons for which he had continual calls. His life was one of deep
piety.
Rev. Wm. Gray came to this conference through his membership
in the West Michigan Conference, which he joined in 1882, where
he served several charges, and was superannuated in 1896, and spent

the greater part of the remainder of his life at his home in Leslie,
Michigan.

blessed, so we rejoice that his servants when taken away are taken
to glory.J. A. MORAY,J. H. REILLY,M. L. FOSTER,

can obtain where moral and religious principles are overlooked, we
heartily commend the denominational institutions of our land and do
emphatically endorse the schools and colleges of our church and real
izing the opportunities and advantages to our Conference in our insti
tution at Adrian, we recommend: .
1. That every pastor of the Michigan Annual Conference thor
oughly inform himself and his people as to the character of Adrian
College and its advantages to the young men and women of our church.
2. That this Conference heartily endorse the work done at Adrian
College during the past three years under the supervision and man
agement of its president, Rev. B. W. Anthony, D. D.
3. We rejoice that the indebtedness upon Adrian College has
been cancelled and that the conditions of the bequest of $12,500by Andrew Carnegie have been met and we urge the. loyal support of
the church both in funds and students.
4. We recommend that the assessment for Adrian College be ten
cents per member.
5. We most heartily recommend the high standard of educationrequired by the Michigan Annual Conference and trust it may never
be lowered but constantly advanced.

36 MINUTES OF THE SIXTY-SIXTH SESSION OF
COMMITTEE ON MINISTERIAL EDUCATION.
We, your committee on ministerial education would submit the
following report:
It is with pleasure that we note the increase that has been madeboth in the permanent and distributive fund enabling the board to as
sist more men.
We feel that the great need of the Church is more candidates of
the right kind for the ministry and better equipment for service, and
the board is materially assisting in this work in giving our boys a
chance for full college work.
We would like to appeal to our young men to attend our own
school.
We further recommend that our assessment of ten cents per mem
ber be made for this work and thati every pastor and circuit endeavor
to bring up the same in full.
O. R. STILSON,
MISS HATTIE M. CHURCH,C. E. PERRY.
HOME MISSIONS.
Your committee on Home Missions report as follows:
Believing that the work of the Home Mission Board is a very
important one, and feeling a sense of satisfaction in the previous work
of said board, we recommend that each delegate at this Conference
be made a special agent to co-operate with the pastor to increase the
subscription list of the Home Mission Bulletin.
We recommend also that our Sabbath Schools be urged to hold
Easter services and forward the collections to the treasurer as a free
will offering.
We further recommend the usual assessment of ten cents per
member.
All of which is respectfully submitted.M. R. SAIGEON,

FOREIGN MISSIONS.
The committee on Foreign Missions submits the following:
Realizing, as we do, the importance of Foreign Missions to the ex
tension of the Church, and the hastening of Christ,s Kingdom, we
therefore recommend the assessment of ten cents per member. Also
that each pastor do his utmost to have each Sunday School on his
charge observe Children,s Day services, and a special collection be
taken for the purpose of raising Bro. F. Tptten,s salary in full.
All of which is respectfully submitted.

E. P. McKENZIE,
HOWARD J. HESCOTT,
CHURCH EXTENSION.
We, your committee on church extension, would make the follow
ing report:
A careful observation brings to us a realization of the fact that as
a church we are missing many opportunities of establishing our church
where it is not known, and also of helping those who are weak.Open doors are about us on every side and there are weak churches
that might be made strong by just a little help at the right time.
We recommend that an assessment of twenty-five cents be placed
upon each member and the observance of church extension day, at
which time a free will offering will be taken which is not to be
credited upon the assessment.
We also recommend that a suitable person be employed under
the direction of the president of this Conference to assist pastors on
weak charges in revival effort and also to enter any new field as
opportunities may be nresented.W. F. OLIVER.AMI ARNOLD,
G. N. GILLETT.
PERIODICALS.Your committee on periodicals beg leave to report:
That notwithstanding the fact that our official organ, The Meth
odist Recorder, is among the best of its kind, and that it is the only
38 MINUTES OF THE SIXTY-SIXTH SESSION OF
medium through which our people can become intelligently acquainted
with the general work of our denomination, we regret to find that the
ratio of subscribers to the number of members in this Conference is
only one to sixteen, thus bringing the paper into only about one-fifth
of our homes.
We therefore recommend that each pastor make an early and an
.earnest effort this year to place the Recorder in each home on his
charge.
We also realize that we cannot too early begin to impress upon
•cur children the principles of Methodist Protestantism and the value
of denominational loyalty, and we therefore further recommend that
our own Sunday School literature be exclusively used in every Sunday
School in the Michigan Conference.
All of which is respectfully submitted.
J. D. YOUNG,M. J. WEAVER,W. N. SWIFT.
COMMITTEE ON MORAL REFORM.
The church as a divine institution and the medium through which
'God gives light and truth to men, should assume an unquestioned at
titude toward the prevalent evils of the time.
God said: "Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy," but inmany places the Lord,s day is fast becoming a day of pleasure in
stead of rest and worship.
Intemperance is sapping the physical, mental and moral life of
its thousands of devotees, while card playing, dancing, games of
chance, and the use of tobacco in all its forms tends to lower the
moral standard of men.
Therefore, we recommend that as a church we take a firm stand
against these evils and thereby help to make them unpopular.

CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR.
We, your committee on Y. P. S. C. E., would report as follows:
Believing that in the young people lies thS future prosperity of
the Church, and recognizing the need of careful training along the
line of Christian work, and believing it to be the best organization
or our young people, therefore we recommend that each pastor
do all in his power to encourage the young people in organizing and
maintaining such societies on their respective charges.
We further recommend that the church use its influence to create
and deepen the interest in this work.
Also that an active correspondence be maintained between the
local and United Society.
All of which is submitted,J. M. CRANDALL,A. SCOTT.
COMMITTEE TO REVISE CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS OF
MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION OF MICHIGAN CONFERENCE.
We, your committee appointed to consider the revision of the
Constitution and By-laws of the Ministerial Association, beg to sub
mit the following:
We recommend:
Item 1.—That paragraph No. 1 of the Constitution be made to read :
"The officers of this Association shall consist," etc.
Item 2.—That the clause in paragraph No. 1, reading "and toassign subjects to all the members of the Michigan Annual Conference,'

he shall select from the Michigan Annual Conference."
Item 3.—Stricken out.JNO. W. WILL,M. R. SAIGEON.
COMMITTEE ON PRESIDENT,S SALARY.
In view of the possible embarrassment which may be caused the
president of this Annual Conference by not having his salary at regular
stated intervals, your committee appointed to consider this subject
would recommend:
First.—That the Conference Treasurer be instructed to forward tothe president on the first day of each month check for salary for the
preceding month.

to the Conference Treasurer before December 1st of each year the
amount assessed his charge for president,s salary.
