In Honor of Mary Ida Jones One year ago, you are sadly missed, Love Teresa, Jim, Geri, Joe and Grandchildren Card of Thanks William B. Hellard We, the family of Will- iam B. Hellard, would like to express our gratitude to everyone for their prayers, visits, support, food, flow- ers and other gifts in our time of need. Appreciation is extended to St. Joseph Hospital staff, Tri County Hospice and his doctors, Dr. Yumang, Dr. Anand and Dr. Lohe for giv- ing such good care during his illness. A special thank you to Jerry Brown for his comforting words to our family and London Funeral Home for their excellent professional services. We will never forget the kindness shown our family during this sad time. The Hellard Family In Loving Memory “You’d think that people would have had enough of silly love songs...I look around me and I see that isn’t so.” Though these lyrics were written in 1976, they still ring true. If you think for a moment, you can probably think of your favorite silly love song. If you think for a few more moments, you can probably think of approximately 50 silly love songs you hope you never have to hear again. Popular music is full of strange and sometimes beauti- ful proclamations of love and romance. You can’t escape it. Want to tell someone how much you love them? There’s a song for that. Want to tell someone how much you hate them? Well, there’s a song for that, too. Some silly love songs are good enough to make you want to fall in love, if you aren’t already. Others are so ridiculous they make you want to scream. Some make you feel good. Some make you feel bad. And some are just downright scary. It is rare to find a picture of a healthy relationship painted in a pop song. Instead, you are likely to find images of controlling partners (“Every Breath You Take” by The Police comes to mind) or partners who have unrealistic expectations. Lately, it is also not uncommon to find actual portrayals of domestic violence in pop mu- sic. It is important to remember that silly love songs are just that—silly. Enjoy them, but don’t take them too seriously. Your life is not a Taylor Swift song. Your partner is prob- ably never going to express his or her feelings by bursting into song and declaring his or her love in the style of your favorite pop singer. And that’s okay! Believing the hype of the most romantic love songs can give you unrealistic expectations. Remember that silly love songs (and roman- tic movies, books, and television shows) are fictional. They were written by someone who wanted to give listeners, viewers, or readers a fun way to escape their everyday life. They are not meant to be seen as manuals for how a boy- friend or girlfriend should treat you. Just as it is important not to take the silliest of love songs seriously, it is also important not to model your life after the scary love songs. Many popular songs try to make it seem like it is normal or even romantic for a boyfriend or girlfriend to want to know where you are at every moment. They try to make threats of suicide seem romantic by say- ing things like “I would die without you” or “I would die for you.” Being controlling is not a sign of love. If some- one tells you that they would die or kill themselves if you ever broke up with them, do not think they are being ro- mantic. They are being manipulative and need mental health help. Remember: love is not control. Love is re- spect. Not every day will bring a love song. Many won’t even bring a happy song. Don’t let this discourage you. For every day that makes you feel like life is nothing more than a sad country song or a scary heavy metal song, just re- member that there is an upbeat pop song waiting in the wings. It might not come tomorrow. But it will come. If you are in a domestic violence situation and need help, please call Family Life Abuse Center at 1-800-755-5348.
