    Pour PressureYou must follow the "maximum pour pressure charts" included in this FormErection Drawing Set. Project Management must manage the variables controllingthe rate of pour, condition of concrete, and additive to the concrete to stay underthe maximum allowable design pressure for the EFCO Form Equipment providedfor your project. The charts indicate lateral concrete pressure vs. rate of placementfor different concrete temperatures and different chemistry coefficients. This chartis based on ACI 347 R-04 and is for normal concrete.

  • EFCO has come to be known to have forms that are "the strongest in theindustry" and some have said, mistakenly, they are strong enough to resistany pour pressures you can put to them. Today, we use high speed concretedelivery systems like pumps to place high performance concrete (HPC) thatmay not harden as fast as concrete we placed 30 years ago. This is a serious"WARNING" to users of EFCO and all form systems.

    The recent and rapid development of concrete additives to liquify concretemixes for easy compaction can drastically increase the concrete formpressures exerted on forming systems. The rapid development of thistechnology has dramatically improved concrete finish quality and the ultimatestrength of concrete. But, misuse of these concrete mix improvements havealso contributed to form failures, resulting in construction worker deaths.

    HPC is continuing to evolve as we learn more about cementitious materials. Inaddition to Portland cement, the mix may include fly ash, slag, silica fume, orother materials to bond aggregates together, To use these materialseffectively, engineers will specify lower water to cement ratios to improve thestrength, permeability, and durability of hardened concrete. The low watercement mixes are difficult to use without water reducing admixtures (akaplasticizers). Water reducers and other additives that improve the propertiesof HPC may also slow the initial hardening process of concrete.

    High capacity placing techniques with HPC that hardens slowly may cause aserious accident. Pumps may place concrete so fast that concrete will remainliquid at the bottom of a pour. As 10 to 40 feet of liquid concrete buildspressure in the form, forms may bulge, ties may break, and forms may evenrupture.

    In extreme accidents, workers may be injured or killed when the formexplodes. Form users must be aware that potential accidents may happen ontheir site if they do not take precautions.

    We always need to be aware of concrete temperature at time of delivery.Historically, this has been the most important variable in determining thepressure in the form. Cool concrete hardens more slowly than warm concrete.In some climates warm concrete will harden before it is placed, causing adifferent problem. A retarder may be added to the mix to keep the concrete"alive" but this will make the concrete behave like cool concrete. Coolconcrete means that the concrete will be liquid inside the form for a longerperiod of time, causing higher pressures. When the pressure exceeds therated pressure, the form may bulge and rupture.

    For pavements and horizontal work, additives only change the time requiredto finish the concrete. For vertical concrete, a decrease in concretetemperature will increase the lateral pressure on formwork. Today we havethe option of using pumps with almost unbelievable capacity to placeconcrete. When placing concrete in wall forms with a bucket, it is hard toreach 10' per hour. With pumps, placement rates exceeding 20' per hour areeasily achievable. This alone may cause excessive pressure inside the form.But when we add the retarding effects of chemistry and temperature, theforms may reach capacity before many users are aware of the problem.

    1. Know the concrete mix additives to be used.

    4. Convert the wall geometry into "cubic yards (CY) pervertical foot" measurement.

    7. Determine the maximum placement rate using the chartsand graphs located on the following page. (These arebased on ACI 347 formula).

    8. Use the placement rate from step seven and the wallcapacity from step four to calculate "CY per hour"placement rate.

    9. Monitor the placement rate at the pump to assure that therated pressure in the form is not exceeded.

    NOTE:If the placement rate is unacceptable, some variables maybe adjusted, such as concrete temperature, concreteadditives, or select a forming system with an appropriatesafety factor and pour pressure rating.

    Attached is a chart indicating rate of placement versus concretetemperature based on allowable pour pressure. It is the contractor'sresponsibility to ensure actual pour pressure does not exceed the ratedcapacity of the form. Concrete mixes sometimes vary on job sites. It isimportant that the contractor monitors each pour closely confirming theactual setting time of the concrete and controlling the rate of pour.

  • One of the many things that we have learned in over 74 years ofleasing forms and in our research is that clean forms are required forgood looking concrete. This is an obvious statement but we cannotover-emphasize this fact. Clean forms will help reduce bug holes andhelp provide uniform texture and color on the face of the concrete.

    If you don't care about the look of your concrete product, you mustcare about this. Forming equipment will be destroyed if the face sheetsare not cleaned first and then oiled before every re-use. When concreteis repeatedly poured against the face of a form without cleaning andoiling, concrete will build up on the surface, and the form will graduallydevelop a condition of "damaged beyond repair".

    CLEANING AND OILING THE FORMS IS A REQUIREMENTCleaning a form face after a concrete crust has been allowed to

    build up from repeated pours without cleaning and oiling becomes anunbearable and very expensive task, if even possible to remove.Wiping down a form face with a burlap bag within one hour afterstripping is a very easy and inexpensive task, and everybody wins. It'seasy, it's inexpensive, and the resulting form delivers a quality concretefinish.

    TWO TYPES OF FORM OILThere are two basic types of form oil on the market; reactive and

    passive.

    REACTIVE: The reactive form oils place a chemically active layerbetween the concrete and the form. This layer reacts with Portlandcement to prevent the cement from bonding to the form. The by-productof the reaction between the oil and the cement can leave a dustysurface on the form and the finished concrete. At times, the dusting canbe heavy.

    PASSIVE: Passive form oils simply provide a film of oil thatcreates a barrier between the concrete and the form. Passive oils arethe best solution.

    EASY STEPS TO SUCCESS1. CLEAN THE FACE SHEET OF FORMS AFTER EACH

    POUR. This is an easy process if done immediately after aform is removed from the wall. Using a burlap bag whilethe concrete is green is easy and cost-effective.

    2. OIL THE FORM. Any form oil is better than no form oil.The man-hours required to clean unprotected forms arefar greater and outweigh the cost of oiling.

    3. USE PASSIVE FORM OIL ON STEEL FORMS. Werecommend barrier type passive form release agent thatminimize form clean up costs because concrete dust lefton the form is minimal. Conversely, reactive form oils willleave heavy dusting on the form that would need to beremoved and if not removed will create concrete adhesionin subsequent pours.

    4. USE A THIN LAYER OF FORM OIL. Even passive formoils will leave a layer of dust if the oil is heavily applied.Thinner is better for the concrete finish and project cost.

    5. CLEAN FORMS IMMEDIATELY AFTER STRIPPING. Theeffort to clean forms increases with time. The concretecrumbs and dust that adhere to the form can be cleanedwith ease immediately after stripping. However, hard workis required if the form is cleaned several days later. We aretalking about a three to five fold increase in cleaning effortwhen not done immediately upon stripping.

    6. USE EF-COAT. From continuous testing over 72 years,we know that the best form oil for EFCO forms is EF-Coat,EFCO's proprietary form release agent. This product wasformulated and tested to provide the lowest in-placeconcrete costs when using the EFCO steel face forms. It'spriced to be more than competitive and provides anoutstanding value.

    Cleaning form faces after every pour is a must. Any oil or anyform release agent is better than none.
