    OverviewOverview

    The database archive modedetermines how log files are archived. It is necessary to switch the archive modein many cases, such as during a client import or database reorganization. SAP strongly recommends thatthe log files be archived (database set to archivelogmode).

    Be sure to follow the steps below to stop the R/3 System, since changing the archive logrequires that the database be shutdown and started up again!!!

    There are certain administrative tasks that must be completed before stopping an R/3 system.Please complete the tasks as directed in the following steps.

    First, ensure that no backgroundjobs are running:

    1. Follow the menu path Tools

    Administration Jobs Selectjobs.

    2. Enter a wildcard (*) in the Job namefield.

    3. Enter a wildcard (*) in the Username field.

    4. By default, the From and To startdate fields will contain the currentdate.

    Change the From date to 2 days priorto the current date in order to view anylong background jobs that may still be

    running.

    5. In the Only jobs with statusgroupbox, select all options.

    6. Click the Execute button to view thebackground jobs.

    7. Look for jobs which have an X inthe active column indicating thatthey are currently running. Active

    jobs should either be canceled or

    left to finish before stopping theR/3 or database instances.

    8. Enter the transaction /nS000 to goback to the main SAP screen.

    Check for batch input jobs:

    9. Follow the path System Services

    Batch input Edit.

    Alternative:

    10. By default, all of the check-boxes inthe Session Status group arechecked. Clear all check-boxesexcept Processing to see if there areany batch input processes stillrunning.

    11. Press the Overview button to list thecurrent batch input processes.

    12. After clicking Overview, check tosee if the message No session

    found is at the bottom of thescreen. If you find an active batchinput, then you should wait until itis stopped or contact the personrunning it for more information.

    13. Check to see if any ABAP/4programs are running by enteringtransaction /nSM50.

    14. Check the status column forprograms that are running. Clickthe Refresh button a few times toensure that there are no ABAP/4programs running (except for yourABAP/4 program, RSMON000).

    15. Enter transaction /nSM04 to ensure

    that no users are on the systemexcept for yourself.

    16. If no other user are logged on, thenyou can exit the SAP system byentering the transaction /nEND.

    If there are other user(s) loggedonto the system, then usetransaction /nSM02 to send asystem message instructing themto log off of the system.

    Managerto be sure that you arelogged on to your local host as useradm.

    2. Open the SAP Service Managerfrom

    the SAP R/3 program group.

    3. Click the Stop button.

    5. Wait until all of the traffic lightsturn gray.

    Normally stopping R/3 doesnt meanthat the database is stopped. However,for archiving purposes, you do notneed to shutdown the database.

    6. Follow the path FileExit toleave the Service Manager.

    2. From the Main program group,

    start theMS-DOS CommandPrompt.

    3. Enter the command sapdba to startthe SAP Database Administrationprogram.

    4. Enter f to select Archive mode.

    5. If the database is not in the desiredarchive mode as indicated by the

    field DATABASE LOG MODE,enter a to switch it to the desiredmode.

    TheArchive Mode can be toggledbetween archivelog (on) andnoarchivelog(off). In this example, wewill change from archivelog tonoarchivelog.

    If the database is running, it will beshutdown, changed and restarted.

    6. Enter y to continue.

    7. Enter y if you are ready toshutdown the database.

    8. Press Return to continue.

    9. The new archive mode isdisplayed. Enter qto exit.

    10. Enter qto quit SAPDBA.

    11. Enter y to confirm that you reallywant to quit.

    Whenever you use the R/3 System, the archivelog modeshould be active.
