A big hug! I sat down several times yesterday to write something about the Billy Graham Outreach we are doing in November and about CHBC's 60th anniversary celebration in a couple of weeks but could not get my mind and my fingers to cooperate. Kim and I visited with her cancer doctor yesterday (Wednesday) before her fifth chemo treatment. While I had been praying for the Lord to allow us grow older together, we also trust the Lord for whatever He has for our life. We knew the doctor would tell us the results of the PET scan they did a week earlier. The last week had been a concentrated time of prayer, sometimes sweet, more often very difficult. Wednesday morning I woke up an hour earlier than normal, feeling the need to spend more time in prayer. I read my Bible, then tried praying. I am thankful than at times like that, God's promise that His Holy Spirit takes over my praying is true. “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. From the Pastor Continued….

The Spirit helps us in our weakness. A life-threatening illness like cancer exposes us for who we are-- needy, weak, totally dependent on God for everything. This should be our normal understanding of life, and Kim and I are aware of this, yet there is something about a life-threatening illness, or a tragedy, that cuts straight into our raw spiritual nerves and causes us to shift our focus from the peripheral to the central. Life and death. Eternity. Christ. Family. Total dependence. Absolute surrender. Kim and I did not have to wait long at the doctor's office. The smile on the doctor's face as he walked in was encouraging, but the first words out of his mouth confused me at first. “I was hoping to give you some good news this morning,” he started. My mind was quickly parsing those words. “He is not going to give us good news,” I concluded. Then I understood. “This is better than good news!” he exclaimed.

The doctor proceeded to tell us that the PET scan shows no cancer activity in areas of concern and that her tumor had shrunk considerably. The blood test also showed that her cancer markers are back to normal. While the struggle is not over, we are ecstatic about Kim's progress.

Kim and have said that cancer does not undo who God is. We trusted Him for our salvation, we can trust Him for our life on this earth. God is always faithful, He is always gracious and merciful. He has shown us His favor so many times in our life. He has been our strength in the most difficult of times. He has blessed us with His peace and with His joy in the darkest of hours. Kim and I know that our Father loves us no matter what happens. But yesterday, when the doctor told us the better than good news that she is responding well to her treatment, it was as if God gave us a really big hug.

We know that God is always good and gracious. And that He loves us al-ways. But that big hug from Him yesterday sure felt good!

What is “My Hope”? My Hope America with Billy Graham is a nationwide effort to reach

people across the United States with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Following a simple biblical mod-el, My Hope America with Billy Graham combines the impact of video programs with the power of personal relationships. Christians across America will open their homes this November to share the Gospel message with friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors using one of several new evangelis-tic programs featuring life-changing testimonies & powerful messages from Billy Graham. Here at CHBC we will be focusing on doing this outreach through our Family BodyLife Home Groups the week of November 10th.

Our Wednesday evening Community Meals are every Wednesday at 5:15PM! For the remainder of the Fall Semseter we will NOT be cooking but encourage you to bring your own meal and join us for a time of fellowship from 5:15—6:00PM!

On Sunday, October 6th, we will receive a special offering for the Pregnancy Help Center

Each day, 2,150 women wake up in America believing abortion is the only realistic solution to an unplanned pregnancy. In this tragic decision, not only is a human life snuffed out, but a woman’s life is changed forever. The Pregnancy Help Center offers free, confidential pregnancy testing, client advocates, referrals for med-ical care, limited obstetrical ultrasound (depends on funds available), information on abortion procedures & risks (do NOT advocate or give abortion referrals), abortion alternatives, baby & maternity clothes, pre-natal vitamins, prenatal & parenting classes (Earn While You Learn program; clients earn items for their babies), Bible study, information on abstinence & secondary virginity, post-abortion healing (for men & women). They offer all this at no charge and depend on private donations.

What YOU can do to help:

We have as our honored guest speaker, Dr. Paige Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Of course we want to share a generous honorarium with him as well as being sure to have comfortable accommodations for him while he is with us.

We will be serving a church breakfast and also a delicious catered lunch on Sunday, Oct. 13th.

We are advertising our celebration locally and sending invitations by mail to former staff and members who have moved away. All of this does require funding. That is where you come in! If you wish to make a donation to help fund our 60th Anniversary Celebration over and above your regular tithes and offerings, please indicate that it is for “60th Ann.” on your check or envelope.

Please prayerfully consider what the Lord would have you give toward this momentous occasion. There are sign up sheets in the foyer and in your Sunday school rooms so you can register for this occasion.

Given to Date for 60th Anniversary Fund: $3605.00
