CDHO Peer MentorshipProgram

College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario

1993–2007 ‒ work under a dentist

In 2007 ‒ CDHO had power to allow RDHsto self-initiate authorized acts andprocedures

Barriers still existed

5 Years Later…Standards Were Reviewed

Opinion changed from 2007 re: experience

2010 glut in market

2007–2010 schools adopted NationalCompetencies

Surveyed new practitioners and dentalhygiene educators




Our Research Revealed…

Struggled with confidence

Conforming to appointment time

Record keeping problematic

Use of technology

Experience important not working underan order

Word mentorship came up often

Unnecessary Barriers

Inability to get employment

Inability to get an order

Inability to gain experience

Urban areas over supplied

Shortage in remote communities

Considered underemployed registrants




When Is the Public at Risk?

Does not understand contraindications toprocedure

Does not recognize when consultation isrequired

Making money has priority

Pressure from employers

No evidence that order decreased risk

No reports of dental hygienists working ontheir own causing harm

In Ontario, approximately

6000 dental hygienists have authorization

from the College.




Without it

they must work under an order,

and that must come from a dentist.

Council adopted amendment —January 25, 2013

Became effective — August 1, 2013

Significant change — inclusion of newcategory

Council satisfied mentorship would developconfidence

Peer Mentorship Program

Created a program to recruit and train

Develop a formal contract
