The last few months our dinners & tours have been sellouts with people on waiting lists. That is what I like to see! We have a caption at the bottom of most dinner flyers “The Social Director, per SVR policy, will bill members who cancel reservations after the deadline or fail to show for dinner.” Most restaurants require a head count when we have a selected menu. The restaurant will bill SVR for the head count given. It is important to let the Event Chairperson know if you will not be attending after you have RSVP. There is usually a waiting list and if you can’t make it we can always fill your place with no problems. It is better to call them than be billed for the dinner you didn’t get to attend. That’s right. You will be billed for a dinner if you have RSVP and you don’t show for the dinner.

Our Tech Session put on in Beth & Bob Jacobson’s garage was quite a success with 45 participants. The weather turned out to be on our side and was beautiful. Jim & Linda McMahan our host and hostess did a wonderful job putting it together again this year. I want to thank you both for doing a great job. Everyone there had a great time with the hands on how to wash & polish cars the right way. David Yamada from Vepa and Ken Brown from Executive Mobile Detail were on hand to show us the techniques how to wash, clay, polish and wax cars. I hope everyone had fun and hope to see some of you at the June Concours at Niello’s.

Summer has arrived. The June and July calendars are open for more events or tours. If anyone would like to put on a last min-ute tour contact Babette Hatten our Social Director. Remember it doesn’t have to be a weekend tour it can be an evening tour. Maybe a evening picnic at a local city park or meet for coffee at a local coffee shop just to chat. How about meeting at Mel’s Café for a burger, fries and coke for a 50’s night? Remember it’s just not the car it’s the people.

Two June 20th RalliesWe will put on two rallies on June 20;  each is patterned after the format of the Colorado Parade rallies in July.  Both start at Crawford Park at the south end of College Street in Woodland CA; (just south of El Dorado Drive.)

The morning rally is “Clever Pic Tour”.  This is named for John Clever who put on a picture rally every spring.  In this type of event contestants are given a set of easy to follow route instructions and a group of photos that may be seen as you follow the course.  The object is to locate where each picture was taken and note on the score sheet the last route instruction done prior to that location.  No calculations are required.  Maximum time to run the course is 3 hours.

Contestants may bring lunch to eat at the park or go get food at nearby restaurants.

A rally school will be held at lunchtime;  Then the afternoon rally will start at 1:30 PM with registration at 1 o’clock.  This will be a Zone 7 Time-Speed-Distance rally lasting about three hours.  In this type of event the object is to follow a set of instruc-tions at the given speeds and times stated so you arrive at each checkpoint exactly on time - neither early or late.  Beginners will be in a separate class.  We suggest bringing a clipboard, watch and calculator to the rallies.

The day will finish at Ludy’s restaurant in Woodland.

2009 marks 50 years since my first rally (in Bucks County PA, navigating for my mother in an Alfa Romeo Spyder).  To com-memorate this, there will be no entry fee as long as you call by June 18 to indicate you are coming.  Please leave a message if you get my answering machine; include name, phone number and which events you are running.  If you leave a mailing address by June 13, I will mail (or e-mail) General Instructions to you.  J. Drifting Back – June 2009by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (June 1979)The SVR Tech Session, June 3, at Autosport (under the radar at Condor Court in Carmichael) by Dwight Mitchell covered the 911 engine, from a very basic discussion of the entire engine operation to a look at a partially assembled engine at each major step along the way for 20 members in attendance.

The June 9 Porsche-Corvette Challenge at Cal Expo limited participation to 75 Corvettes and 75 Porsches, $5.00 entry fee. According to SVR event chairman, Ted Colbert, the date was re-scheduled several times before SVR and the Corvette Owners Club of Sacramento could finally agree on car classification rules. This may have been the last Porsche-Corvette Challenge since Porsche drivers won 9 of 13 classes and the TTOD driver, Gary Walton in a 914, beat the nearest Corvette by four seconds. Stan Breyfogle helped run the event, Dwight Mitchell designed the course, Jim Bonney helped with tech, Sally and Dolores Weddle worked registration, Jack Samples and the Burkes did the grid, the Wilsons helped with timing, and announcers were C.C. Craig, Kern Breaux, Kirk Bradford and Paul Bates.

The June 16th Luau at Bess Feil’s home promised a memorable event right down to the apple in the roast pig’s mouth from Kato’s Katering and topped off with live Hawaiian music and Polynesian dancers from the Zombie Hut. Kern Breaux was in charge of keeping the Mai Tai assembly line moving.

The June DRIFTER announced the Grand Opening of Supe-rior Motor Cars, 1740 Eureka Way in Redding, as the newest Porsche-Audi-VW dealer in Northern California featuring SVR-members Bill Rhea (owner and president), Gary Waldsmith (sales manager), and Mike McCracken (parts manager). The addition of Superior Motor Cars gave THE DRIFTER three Porsche dealers as newsletter advertisers (with Wes Lasher Porsche on Florin Road and Niello Porsche on Madison Avenue).

20 Years Ago (June 1989)The June issue of THE DRIFTER featured a story entitled, “Can an Older Woman Help a Younger Man Find True Happiness?” by Pat Wilson about her experience as an instructor at the April Zone 7 autocross school. At the conclusion of the school, her male students said, “yes you can,” and they did. But, Marian Berriman worried aloud to her instructor, Sally Boeck, “Will Bob still love me once I become the faster driver of our household?”

The June 24 Brand X Autocross at Cal-Expo, chaired by Kern Breaux, was a smashing success (well, not literally). As the sun came up, Kern had plenty of course setup help from Mike Willis, Dwight Mitchell, Ken Mitchell, Randy Vidmar, Rich McGlumphy, Greg Peart, and Mike Browning, plus some PCAers from other Zone 7 regions including Len Harrington, Dan Holly, and the Beltzes from Yosemite Region, Hank Watts and Catherine Chrisafulli from Loma Prieta Region, and Sandy England from Redwood Region. Those SVR drivers attacking the course included Nikki Duncan, Don Girard, Kevin Alioto, Bob Peake, and Cathy Wolfe. Forty-three drivers turned out for the autocross and informal school, and they each got six runs

until “Miller Time” was declared at 4:00 P.M.

10 Years Ago (June 1999)June 6 Sail Tour

The June 10 Dinner Meeting at the Old Spaghetti Factory, chaired by Herb and Jan Hoover, was a perfect setting for award-ing the Dumbkopf Award to Bob Peake, TWICE! Yes, that’s correct - he won it for two separate transgressions. Dumbkopf #1: Bob showed up at an autocross as an instructor in his 914-6 that had only one seat. Okay, Bob, where does the student sit? Dumbkopf #2: He shows up to run the next autocross without first emptying the car’s trunk. The event was stopped after most had completed their first run because of oil on the course and grid. All cars were inspected - it was Bob’s 914 with a pool of fresh oil underneath. Opening the trunk revealed a freshly bro-ken new can leaking oil through holes in the trunk floor. The clap-o-meter went off the scale.

The June 26 SVR Autocross at Mather Field was the third event on the 1999 SVR autocross series, chaired by Glen Brooksby. The 0.65-mile course, designed by John Kessler, was a challenge to all 34 drivers participating. Glen Brooksby took top time (46.836 seconds) with Pat Costin from Sierra Nevada Region close behind (by 0.030 seconds). My, that IS close! Barbara Mc-Crory had top time for ladies (50.161 seconds) in the ‘74 914 that husband Steve just happened to bring home one day (he was supposed to be shopping only for a trailer). Russ Hildebrand beat Robert Stefanowicz for third overall and John Kessler, Bill Winkler, Don Zinke, and Steve Nieslony were locked in a battle for 5th before Kessler prevailed. David Pyles and his ‘87 944 took top time for stock cars edging Bud Behrens in his ‘99 Boxster.

“Hot day, cool caves,” was Judy Hanna’s DRIFTER headline for her story about the June 27 Calaveras County Caverns Tour chaired by Jim and Kellie Finley. With the valley heat reaching 80 degrees and climbing at 9:00AM, the 54 degree Calaveras caves were a welcome relief for all but Jude Sisson for whom caves and claustrophobia did not mix well. Nicole, the cave guide, narrated as she led the SVR spelunkers through the underwelt with Phil Lawrence occasionally lighting the way with his camera’s flash as he photo-documented the event for THE DRIFTER and Judy Hanna’s story. At the picnic lunch it was time for sharing, and everyone raved about Carla and Vito Blomo’s dessert, especially Arnold Ramirez. Kent Brandon and Cindy McKenzie, and Bob Peake entertained the group with stories about their recent trips to Germany.

When I thought of Saratoga, the first thought that always came to mind was the Carly Simon song, “You’re So Vain.” You know………”Well I heard you went up to Saratoga, and your horse naturally won………” Never mind that she was singing about the other side of the country Saratoga and not our beauti-ful California Saratoga.

Living in California for 10 years, I have never gone that far south from Sacramento. When Kaye and Dave Mitchell said they were planning a tour for the day, I put it on my calendar immediately. I was so glad I did.

We ALL met at the Starbuck’s off Pocket Road. ALL meaning 8 of us!! Four cars – three Porsche’s and an Audi. This had to be the smallest tour I’ve been on. We were all strangers at the begin-ning of this tour with awkward hand shakes and small talk. We ended up as friends. In between 8:30am to 5:30pm we drove the 160 following the Sacramento River with the sun shining off the water. When we hit the freeway, even with our small group, we were dodging the slow cars to keep together. We weren’t the only car group on the road. We passed some really fine, tricked out Impala’s and got “the nod” from some of the drivers.

Our first stop for wine tasting was at the Picchetti Winery. The grounds are beautiful and very homey. The old structures, sur-

rounded my large old trees whispered the lives of generations. We chose a picnic table by a babbling brook and headed for the tasting room. Having only 8 people on this tour allowed us to have a more intimate setting in the tasting room and the young

man poured, treating us like we were a private, exclusive party. We even got chocolate!!

The tasting over, we gathered outside to our picnic table and en-joyed conversations about……..what else….PORCSHES!!........Oh! And spas in Calistoga and Carson City. We shared wine and relaxed and all decided to take a side trip up the windy roads to The Ridge and look over San Jose. What a beautiful perspective it gives, to look out over a city from above. It all seems so peaceful. The ride down the hill was the favorite. Kaye and Dave, being the lead, kept us in check, but I had to let out a WHOOP at the end! With the trees overhead and the sunlight sparkling like lighting flashes through the leaves, the twists and turns, and wind blow-ing past us, it was a thrill!

Our next stop was the Savannah-Chanelle Winery. Here we got a private tour with a young man with quite a knowledge of wine and a sense of humor to boot. We learned of the many owners this winery has had, how the San Andres fault runs right through the property, and how the main building which just has bath-rooms, could crumble should a quake hit (makes for quick potty stops!), and that the winery is named after the current owners daughters. However, the daughters name is really spelled Chanel, but the perfume company didn’t like that,(the whole threats of suing and all that business), so they spell it different. After the tour Dave and Kaye had grapes and cheese they set up at a picnic table over looking the winery.

We sat around and talked, stalling the end of the day. It was sup-pose to end at 4:00, but we didn’t say our good-byes until 5:30. Some of us stayed over night, some went home. But all had a fan-tastic time. All thanks to Dave and Kaye Mitchell for a great tour.

It was one of the most clear days I can recall. Clean crisp air and a beautiful house provided by Bob Jacobson. I did not arrive early and so parked at the end of the driveway and walked up to the garage. And what a walk it was. At this point I really didn’t care if I learned anything about external car care as I counted twenty-seven Porsches and a few Corvettes as well! Took me about ten minutes before I finally got to the garage! We eventually fit in six cars for the cleaning.

David Yamada, Jim McMahen and Ken Brown started us off with an overview of the days plan. This included products we would be using along with insight as to their proper usage. Then it was off to start washing cars! We would run six cars through the entire process of wash to wax .We washed, dried, clayed, pol-ished, second polished and waxed six beautiful cars to that new car glow.

The education gleaned was wonderful but what I enjoyed even more was meeting the people. Conversations naturaly started with the cars but eventually flowed into other great conversa-tions. The stories behind some of these cars is, trust me, truly

amazing. I won’t go into them here as I hope to write other ar-ticles about them for later publication.

This article is to thank David, Jim, Ken, Bob & C & J Catering (for the great burgers!). I learned a lot about caring for my car. I was able to assist in cleaning other cars. I had a great lunch and met a great group of people. Quite the deal! I can’t wait unti the next one! Thanks to everyone involved!

Stuttgart. Everything remained very quiet when today’s Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG established VW-Porsche-Vertriebsgesellschaft mbh, the VW-Porsche Sales Company, together with Volkswa-genwerk AG, as it was called at the time, in April 1969. Holding stock capital of DM 5 million, the new company launched the strategy of success for two sports cars still carefully held back from the public pending their final presentation: the VW-Porsche 914 and 914/6.

The establishment of the VW-Porsche Sales Company marked the beginning of a true story of success – and the fortunate end of a dramatic developmentBack in the mid-60s VW was looking for a successor to its then rather outdated Type 34 sports coupe, better known as the “Karmann Ghia”. At the same time Porsche was striving to expand its position in the market with a sports car in the promising segment beneath the 911.

Facing this challenge Ferry Porsche and VW’s CEO Heinrich Nordhoff agreed in spring 1966 on a joint venture destined to benefit both parties: Porsche was given the assignment by Volk-swagen to develop a low-cost mid-engined sports car intended to enter the market as a Volkswagen with four cylinders and as a Porsche with a six-cylinder boxer engine.

Ferry Porsche with his VW-Porsche 914-8 (1969)

With the development process continuing at a good pace, the Board of Management of VW was suddenly confronted with a tragic change: Heinrich Nordhoff died unexpectedly in 1968 and Kurt Lotz was appointed the new Chief Executive Officer. Lotz rescinded the contract agreed verbally and insisted on Volkswagen receiving the sole and exclusive sales rights for the car being de-veloped by Porsche. After long and tough struggles bringing the 914 to the brink of failure more than once, the two companies agreed in a compromise to call the new car the “VW-Porsche” and to market this new model through a joint sales network.

The VW-Porsche 914 was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show

on 11 September 1969 as the first mid-engined sports car built in Germany in series production. The combination of the two brand names Volkswagen and Porsche nevertheless turned out to be an image problem for the new model series commonly re-ferred to by the press as the “Volksporsche” or “People’s Porsche”. This was a particular disadvantage for the 914/6 powered by the two-litre flat-six carried over from the 911 T 2.0. For despite its outstanding performance, the 914/6 was hardly accepted by most of Porsche’s existing customers.

VW-Porsche 914 1.7 (1969)

The four-cylinder VW-Porsche 914, on the other hand, became a genuine success in the market, accounting for a production vol-ume of 115,631 units until the series ceased production in spring 1976, and thus becoming the best-selling sports car of its time.

Most of the cars built were exported to the United States, where the 914 was marketed as a genuine, fully-fledged Porsche without the VW prefix.

Today the VW-Porsche 914 is acknowledged as a popular classic supported by numerous 914 clubs the world over. Particularly the 914/6 built only 3,338 times is one of the most sought-after collector cars from Porsche.

The Porsche Museum is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 914 model series with a rare special exhibit on display from 9 April – 10 May 2009: the Porsche 914/8 with its 300-bhp eight-cylinder racing engine once owned by Ferry Porsche himself. With only two of these cars ever being built, one was presented to Ferry Porsche in 1969 as a special gift for his 60th birthday.

SVR Introduces New Auto Cross Formatby Collin Fat

If you are new to auto cross or an old hand, our new auto cross chairman has something new. Bob Peake has exceeded expectations with new changes to our club’s auto cross format. Most interesting is his introduction of a hospitality tent that brings this event to a new level. With seating for up to twenty members, tenting and lounge for viewing, the new format significantly improves upon lunch break options. Bob arranged for a first-class hospitality tent with barbecue featuring Johnson’s Best Bratwurst with all the fixings including chips and a very cold drink. All for the nominal price of just $5.

In addition to the addition of the hospitality venue, Bob introduced a new format of two runs times three laps per run group with multiple run groups. This allowed the thirty-five plus auto crossers to actually take a break and the working groups to have shorter stints on the course. For the drive group we enjoyed three laps per run with two timed laps, and in the after-session three timed laps. Enough time to heat up those R-compound racing tires.

Everyone I talked to at the April 18th event at the morning drivers meeting was a little leery of the new format but by the end of the morning session they were thoroughly convinced of the benefits of the new format:1) more laps and track time, 2) continuous use of the track with no interruptions,3) time to chill and watch fellow members at the limit, 4) and less time working.

What a novel concept! Congratulations to Bob Peake for a job well done! I thoroughly enjoyed the event for the changes made and for the camaraderie of our great membership.

Toney’s Win Snake Eyes V Rallyby Rik Larson

Jessica and J. Toney (daughter/father) won the first event of the 2009 Zone 7 Rally Series with a score of 87 seconds of error. A total of 5 cars started from the San Joaquin Delta College park-ing lot (also the scene of the Yosemite Region Zone 7 Concours that same morning).

After a total of just over 1 hour and 40 minutes of driving time (and just over 60 minutes of actual competitive rallying), all cars returned to the start location to partake in the available BBQ setup by Yosemite Region (as part of their concours).

The rally was set up with a total of 5 checkpoints that was meant to prepare the entrants for what to expect at the Porsche Parade Rally in Keystone, Colorado on July 1st.

The route headed north of Stockton and covered less than 70 miles. The central theme was to use the town of Thornton for the checkpoint locations. Checkpoints 1, 3, and 5 were staffed by myself (at the Thornton Post Office) and checkpoints 2 and 4 were staffed by Ron and Sally Boeck. Ron and Sally were located directly across from a large cherry orchard so they were able to pick a few ripe cherries while waiting for the cars.

A big thanks to Keith McMahan for measuring the event. And of course thanks to Ron and Sally Boeck. J. Toney handled the scoring (rather easy with just 5 cars). And Paul Czopek from Yo-semite Region had arranged for the BBQ. All of the cars entered received an award…..a mug with the Zone 7 logo…………pro-vided by Rachel Johnson with Reflections in Glass (one of our Drifter advertisers).

May 6, 2009 SVR board meetingby Kim Nelson, SVR Secretary

Editor’s Note: The was no April Board of Director’s meeting. By moving our meetings to the first Wednesday of the month we can print the previous month’s BoD minutes in the following month’s Drifter.

President Cookie Anderson called the meeting to order at 6:42PM. Attending: Bill Keegan, Kim Nelson, Cookie Ander-son, Doug Klein, JR Evinger, John Murphy, Babette Hatten, Helen Ashuckian and Bob Peake.

Minutes: The March minutes were reviewed and accepted.

OLD BUSINESS:None.

NEW BUSINESS:SVR’s Policy Statement will be discussed in detail at the June Board Meeting. A motion was made to move the publication date for the membership directory to October/November (in recent years it has been published in the May/June time frame) – it was seconded and unanimously approved. As a result of this decision another motion was made to print 100 more current Membership Directories so that we would have enough for the rest of this year. This motion was seconded and unanimously approved.

The Board discussed and agreed to continue SVR’s current prac-tice of allowing only Board Members and appointed Chairper-sons to have badges different from member badges. It was also noted that “Concours Judge” badges are available to graduates of the Concours Judging School conducted by Zone 7. Over 25 year membership badges are provided to qualifying members by PCA National.

Kim led a discussion about coordinating events that are held at the Niello Porsche Dealership. Past practice has been that all requests for SVR activities that take place at the Dealership are run past Kim who then coordinates with Niello. This helps both Niello and SVR to ensure we have the proper coordina-tion. Babette will include a statement in the packets she sends to event chairpersons about the procedure for coordinating events at Niello and JR will consider adding “Niello Event Coordina-tor” with Kim’s name and contact information to the standing contacts section of the Drifter.

In June you can be sure we will have some hot weather---so get some SVR and Porsche

T-shirts—still only $20 in various colors. Also, you must need an SVR polo shirt—especially if you are go-ing to the Parade in Colorado.

The fleece vests ($35) are still in style and feel good on a cool morning in the Colorado rockies. We also have Porsche crests to sew onto all types of clothes.

Don’t forget an SVR car badge ($15)-let people know what region you are from! Make your friends GREEN with envy!

Did you know that “green with envy” comes from the ancient Greeks. They speculated that envy made the liver work overtime, producing excess bile and adding a slightly greenish tint to one’s complexion. The notion survived in literature--envy is the “green-ey’d monster” in Shakespeare’s Othello--and became ingrained in this expression.
