GUIDANCE, VALUES AND DIRECTION Anna Beilharz

This month’s text comes from Mark 6:45-52:

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.

47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.

Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.

2 Templer Talk September 2018

The story of Jesus walking on the water is commonly recognised, one of the miracles that symbolise to some his divinity, and to others the spirituality one can achieve through following his teachings.

The story of the loaves and the fishes had just happened: the crowd that Jesus dismissed was indeed the crowd of thousands who had been sated by five loaves of bread and two fish: literally or metaphorically, according to personal belief, symbolising their trust in Jesus and his message.

The things that speak to me in this month’s text are:

1. It is significant that Jesus had left his disciples: he had gone to pray, alone, on a mountaintop (commonly understood to symbolise closer connection to God due to physical proximity of high, natural landmarks and ‘God in his heaven’). Meanwhile, the disciples were on water, a substance much harder to navigate than solid ground. In water it is easy to flounder, whereas on land structural foundations can be built – this could be interpreted as the level of certainty people have of themselves and their convictions, a concept particularly pertinent to intangible constructs like personal beliefs and faith. This difference in medium that the separated parties experienced could be symbolic of Jesus expecting the disciples to find their own way (especially as they had just witnessed, indeed been participants of, the loaves and the fishes miracle – although they had not understood at the time the underlying message that if they had merely had faith in their resources, they would have had enough sustenance).

Where do you find your solid ground? On your own or in company? How do you find your way to your truth, the core values you live your life by? What resources help you get there?

2. It is significant that Jesus appeared to the disciples when they were in rough waters, battling against a strong wind. Clearly they were not in control of their physical situation and were, to some extent at least, in need of guidance. It could be said that the disciples were approaching this situation as they had always approached it, and that this wasn’t effective any more. Jesus’ appearance in such a calm (albeit unexpected) manner immediately stilled the rough waters around them and steadied their boat. In this way the disciples found comfort in their situation, perhaps synonymous with spiritual fulfilment, now that they had received guidance. They understood that a new approach was required for the changes they were experiencing as their society changed, and as they grew in their personal lives.

What strategies have you had to modify as you have grown older and your personal circumstances have changed? What wisdom has that brought you?

3. It is significant that Jesus appeared just before dawn as the new day signifies enlightenment (“it dawned on them”) in so many cultures. Thus, Jesus’ appearance “showed the light of day” to the disciples, analogous to finding the way to core-level understanding – leading to personal fulfilment.

Where do you seek enlightenment? Where do you find it? In the stillness of a country sunrise or sunset? In the warmth of family and friends? In

Page 3: 09 September 2018 Issue 62 templer - … TT 2018 Final WEB.pdf · 2 Templer Talk September 2018 The story of Jesus walking on the water is commonly recognised, one of the miracles

Templer Talk September 2018 3

personal pursuits that fulfil your dreams? Is it easy for you to find this peace?

4. The disciples were amazed, for their hearts had been hardened. This indicates an initial lack of openness on the disciples’ behalf: whether conscious or unconscious, a lack of trust, nonetheless. They did not recognise the worth of the miracle they had witnessed first-hand, and perhaps more significantly, they did not recognise their own self-worth: their ability to not only survive, but thrive, if they had greater self-belief. Trust and belief in our inner selves (our conscience) is counterintuitive in many ways, especially in today’s consumer society, but it can be learned. It remains relevant in our modern times, in our changing world with shifting politics, economics and climate all impacting on our daily lives, potentially disastrously so.

Is it easy for you to trust your inner convictions, especially in times of trial? How do you talk to yourself – what sort of words do you use? What self-talk do you need to actively catch before it becomes destructive to your wellbeing, your ability to move forward positively, with ease?

Further questions about this text could be considered:

If the disciples had understood the significance of the loaves and the fishes, would the water have remained calm on their journey? If they had been more accepting of Jesus’ message (some would say power) would Jesus have needed to walk out on the water, and would he have kept going past when he reached them?

The overriding message in this passage for me is that because the disciples did not have inner trust of their situation, they failed to be at peace with it, with their surroundings and with themselves. Following on from this, if the disciples had trusted themselves and their resources completely, they would have recognised the worth of the miracles, and that would have given them the tools to handle their precarious situation on the water better. They would have been able to master their situation without needing rescuing by external sources.

This story has some parallels with our own story, as the Temple Society Australia experiences a time of great change. In many ways we are fighting for our survival, whatever form that may take. Historically, we have always looked inwards, trusting our forebears’ practices and continuing them (as with the disciples’ existing, standard approach that was no longer proving effective). To date we have been content with the workings of our little community and were happy to continue along past practices. Like the disciples who did not understand the message in the miracles, we Australian Templers have not adapted sufficiently to changing situations (most prominently demonstrated in our declining membership).

The current robust discussion about who and what we are, the answer to which will guide the future direction of the Society, signals our increasingly urgent need for adaptation and change. At times it feels like we are rocking on a sea of our own, without knowing how to maintain our solid foundation (our Templer past, its heritage and history) in today’s world, vastly different from the (political and social) world into which the Temple Society came into being. The need for calm and rational discussion is clear and evident, much as

Page 4: 09 September 2018 Issue 62 templer - … TT 2018 Final WEB.pdf · 2 Templer Talk September 2018 The story of Jesus walking on the water is commonly recognised, one of the miracles

the disciples were in need of calm guidance to ride out the boat trip successfully.

While it is good to look inside the TSA it is, in my personal opinion, also time to look outside, to consider other methods of operating and to open ourselves to opportunities we have not yet fully explored. If we are to continue as a Society, it is time to consider all options. This requires looking inwards to draw from our heritage, and looking outwards to adapt to a changing world. It involves looking back to look forward. As has been indicated in Templer publications, everyone is entitled to express their views and participate in forming future directions. I encourage all members

to contribute and have their voices heard. Can YOU rise to the challenge?

I look forward to the inclusive discussions about the future of the Society which deeply informs my life perspectives. It is so unique that it is proving incredibly difficult to classify (pigeon hole?) and define (explain to others, who have not had personal experience of its physical, emotional and spiritual assets). This is its strength, which should be embraced and honed, then shown to the wider world.

I, for one, don’t want to see the Templer values I treasure dwindle away to nothing.

S The Warte is presently reporting on the departure to the Holy Land of the Temple Society’s leadership 150 years ago. This significant anniversary is being commemorated at a conference at the University of Haifa in November 2018.

At an assembly of committee members and Elders at Kirschenhardthof in March 1868, it was unanimously agreed that the time had come to put into effect their vision and they planned to begin to undertake their work at Nazareth in Galilee.

Before arriving in Palestine, Christoph Hoffmann and Georg David Hardegg conducted negotiations with the Ottoman authorities in Constantinople, supported with great kindness and care by the Embassy of the Norddeutsche Bund, which made it possible to submit our plans for Palestine to

the government under favourable conditions. A farewell assembly was attended by some 1200-1500 people, at which Christoph Paulus who, owing to Hoffmann’s imminent departure, had taken over editorial duties for the Süddeutsche Warte and spoke about the enormity of the task ahead. His remarks made it clear that the mood was by no means blindly euphoric, but rather marked by a sense of reality.

Paulus wrote: “They have, it seems to me, arrived at the same turning point in their activity in which all reformatory men in history find themselves. So we wish them luck, our departing brothers; the Lord they serve will determine the time when the seed they have scattered shall take root and grow.”

REGIONAL COUNCIL UPDATE

Mark Herrmann

A date for Sommerfest 2019 – Sunday, March 24 – has been set.

Collectively over 200 members and friends attended our three Future Forums last month. Interactive structured discussion around elements of the TSA Strategic Plan (2018-2022) yielded much feedback which, together with the online forum contributions, will be analysed and should prove helpful in confirming or modifying the proposed vision and purpose statements for presentation at the upcoming Annual General Meeting.

A reminder that the AGM is scheduled for Sunday, September 9, from 10.30am in the Bayswater Chapel.

Readers may recall an article entitled Seeking Justice written by Eberhard Frank and published in the June 2017 Templer Talk. In his article, Eberhard put his arguments for seeking an apology from the Australian Government for the internment of Templers (and others) – innocent, law-abiding people living in peace at the time – during and beyond the end of World War II.

Eberhard has written to successive Prime Ministers since Paul Keating, but has met with little success. A response to his most recent correspondence – to (then) Prime Minister Turnbull – contained an admission that “mistakes were made”.

RC members now propose for Eberhard to come to Melbourne and, at a specially-convened forum on the issue of a Government apology to members of the Temple Society, for him to present the case in support of his actions. This will be an opportunity for all those interested to listen and contribute their opinion to the conversation. The forum is likely to be conducted in either October or November, following a Sunday service in Bayswater. Details will be advised and some suitable background information made available in due course.

Interviews are presently being conducted to appoint a new TSA Executive Officer. With John Maddock retiring in December, there will be time to effect a smooth transition.

Following application and interview, RC members are pleased to announce the awarding of an Australian-German Templer Exchange scholarship to Jessica Blackwell. Jessica will travel to Germany and spend time with the TGD in the first half of next

year. Thanks are extended to Melissa English for her coordination of the program at our end.

In the middle of August, we received notification our project “Home Grown Community” – a decommissioned W-class tram, a community garden and a colourful mural to form the basis of a space for broader community use in Knox – was ineligible for the State Government’s Pick my Project community funding initiative. This certainly took the wind out of our sails and we are at a loss to understand the “ineligibility”. Voting is now open

and closes on September 17. Those intending to vote need to register for a Pick My Project account and select the local community they wish to vote in.

We now need to reassess our project. Whether we’ve been successful in the allocation of a tram will be advised in late September. We have also submitted a Knox Council Community Development Fund grant application for the establishment of a community garden at Bayswater.

Spring is here! The baby birds will find their wings and the flowers are blooming. Our garden has been awash with daffodils and camellias for a few weeks now, but the Spring feeling of renewal is so refreshing.

Thirty-seven ladies have just returned from the Women’s Retreat at Yarra Junction and it was a wonderful weekend. It was lovely to have so many interesting, inspiring and diverse women from all over Victoria and seven from Sydney to join together and participate in a range of activities. I am so grateful to be able to run this event, but have decided that this may have been my last retreat for a while.

This month I will be catching up with as many people as possible, particularly those who currently need assistance. In October, I will be taking some time off to have surgery and will return to work in November, but will be unable to drive until the end of November. If something is weighing on your mind, or you would like a visit, please contact me prior to the beginning of October, so I have enough time to organise a visit.

There is quite a bit I need to organise before I take a break. One of these is our upcoming CHAMPION Bunnings BBQ fundraiser on Saturday, October 27 in Bayswater. We will require more than a few

volunteers for this event, so if you can sell or cook some sausages and have one to two hours free between 8am and 5pm on this date, please contact me. I would be most grateful to hear from you as I will be unable to attend on this day. I would like to have lots of helpers to support our already overworked CHAMPION volunteers on the day.

On September 25, Knox City Council is having a presentation on Elder Abuse. If this interests you to attend, please contact me for more information.

Many thanks to the people who donated money to a special request for help through the online bulletin last month. I look forward to updating you on this lady’s situation when I can. I will say that she was extremely grateful and overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity – your help will make a big difference! Thank you so much!

Unfortunately our Pick my Project idea did not get selected for voting, but the community garden idea may still have roots (excuse the pun) in our little neck of the woods! Watch this space!

Telelink dates are for September 14 and 28. I look forward to speaking with you then.

Keep smiling!

SYDNEY FAITHOn the third weekend in August, the picturesque and rainy Yarra Valley was the setting for the TSA’s seventh Women’s Retreat, organised by our Community Care Worker, Martina Eaton. A first-timer, I was one of the seven Sydneysiders attending. How did the experience touch my faith?

In its broad meanings, faith was much discussed among us, and fresh in many minds were the surveys completed at recent Future Forums. In open, non-judgemental conversation, we talked about our personal faiths: Christian, humanist, New Age and even a form of counter faith, wherein atheism is a stance for living a mindful and morally guided life.

Generosity abounded where we stayed; ADANAC is a Christian-based camp facility, also serving conferences and retreats comfortably. We were kind to each other and ourselves, and nature was kind to us, bestowing visual treats of flowering wattle, yellow hues slashed amid the soft greens reflected in a peaceful lake. An artist among us captured this atmosphere in a luminous watercolour painting, while a portion of rainbow revealed itself to another fortunate eye.

We shared food, wine, songs, laughter. We shared knowledge in the mock-competitive arena of a trivia game, and knowledge in richer, deeper ways. We shared convictions about gender equality, the need for protection from abuse and for healing.

To renew our faith in each other as caring human beings is a precious thing. Faith in the potential

of humanity to improve its care for fellow human beings and for the environment. It becomes more tangible when positive convictions are shared.

Sunday morning brought fresh inspiration from Elder Renate Beilharz’s period of contemplative reflection. Her theme was the importance of connections based on trust. Trust strengthens our lives, Renate reminded us, and building trust takes a long time, with both parties maintaining trustworthy behaviour to achieve it. Loving thoughts were sparked and my faith renewed, especially in the importance of spiritual guidance, thanks to Renate.

Afterward, the calm ambience of nature was an impetus for recalling the wise words of the mystic I esteem, Hildegard von Bingen, who in the twelfth century had the insight to write, ‘Everything that is in the heavens, on earth and under the earth is penetrated with connectedness, penetrated with relatedness.’

The generosity of Martina, along with Jan Johnson, and the generosity of Renate, with the many Templer women who contributed selflessly over seven past retreats, are further inspiration. They have, in turn, promoted the trust and generosity of each participant over years.

We thank them warmly and aim to share the organisational load of future retreats for this bi-annual weekend tonic to continue.

Welcome to Spring! We have been pretty lucky regarding the cold weather during Winter, but I just love the mild, but not too chilly days of Spring. Let’s hope we receive some rain during the next few months; our farmers are really struggling here in NSW.

Women’s Retreat – Yarra Junction, VICMy colleague Ingrid Hoffmann will be writing a detailed account of this year’s Retreat, but I would just like to add a little bit… personally, it was a working weekend for me; it is such a privilege to connect with a vibrant group of women – everyone came together, supporting one another when needed and just enjoying being together. Thank you ladies, both from NSW and Victoria, for making my job such a pleasurable experience! I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

Spring MarketBy the time you read this we will have had our Sydney fundraising TSA Market Day in Meadowbank – keep an eye out for Ingrid Hoffmann’s report in next month’s Templer Talk for more about this exciting day!

ServicesWe did not have a service in August, deferring it to hold a planning day for the Spring Market. Organisers and volunteers came together to ensure the day ran smoothly. Thank you to all who attended; your contribution is appreciated! This month we are excited to have a first-time visitor, Anna Beilharz. Please make her feel welcome and bring some finger food for lunch to share afterwards. See you all then at 10.30am sharp!

Seniors’ GroupWe will be meeting at Blacktown this month. Last month’s activity attracted 17 participants; though the renovations changed our seating arrangements, everyone was still able to chat with each other, playing musical chairs a little! My apologies to those who were upset by the change; let’s hope we will be able to organise for us to sit together again during the next event there in November.

Away on LeaveI will be away on leave from Monday, October 15 until Saturday, October 27. If you have any community needs within this time, please contact our wonderful faith facilitator, Ingrid Hoffmann.

EventsThe next Sydney TSA Night Out has been changed due to my time away – it will now be Friday, October 5 at 7pm. We are going to The Bavarian restaurant at Rouse Hill. Please RSVP to me by Friday, September 7.

On Friday, November 23, 10.30am to 3.00pm, the Moorebank Heritage Group is presenting a bus tour: Enemy Aliens, including a talk by a historian. You will be visiting Holsworthy Internment Camp remnants, and the military railway site, built, in part, by internees. A light lunch is included, cost $42. Bookings are required. Please contact Pam Browne M: 0408 579 781 or email: [email protected] If there are enough Templers, we may be able to organise a mini bus to transport everyone there. Please let me know if you have booked.

YouthWe are having a movie night at Meadowbank Hall on Friday, September 14 at 7.30pm. We are screening Avengers Infinity War. If you aren’t into this type of movie, we do have a chill out zone in the back hall, where you can play board or card games, read, chat or just hang out. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Invite your friends – we’d love to see heaps of you!

Carers’ Week 2018As a thank you to our carers, we have received a grant to purchase tickets to the Riverboat Postman in Brooklyn, cruising the Hawkesbury River on Sunday, October 14. Depending on numbers, it will either be offered free of charge, or at a discounted cost. If you are a carer, look out for your invitation in the mail/email. If you do not receive one in the next week or two, please contact me and I will place you on the list.

Life JournalI have started going through the Life Journal with quite a few of you now, and am really enjoying learning more about you and your lives. This is a treasure to leave behind for your loved ones, as well as enjoying reminiscing about your past. Please contact me if you would like to participate.

Looking back on this, I can see we have quite a bit going on! Please try to join in where you can; I know life is busy, but why not make use of all these social opportunities? It is what community is all about – joining in, meeting up and supporting one another where we can.

CHAMPION Jacinta Aulsebrook

Every month seems to get busier and busier at CHAMPION, new things always popping up for us to do. Our volunteers are putting in large amounts of time so that everything runs smoothly and continues to make a difference in the lives of the many people who see us each month!

Last month we were nominated and subsequently, received a Deakin Community Award. The award ceremony was held at Yarra Valley Grammar school in Ringwood, organised by Mr Michael Sukkar MP, the Federal Member for Deakin, with the Master of Ceremonies being Ms Dee Rhall MP, State Member for Ringwood. Martina and I attended together with five of our volunteers.

It was a great honour to be nominated and to receive this award, as well as being recognised for our work alongside some truly inspirational people, groups and organisations. We were inspired to hear about so many great initiatives, movements and people all striving to help those in need. We all had a great night and enjoyed the music by Choir Victoria, yummy food and good company. This was even more special as we are not based in the Deakin electorate. This shows our work has been seen to be helping people from all over outer eastern Melbourne. See our Facebook page for a video and photos from the event.

Our next big happening will be our Bunnings BBQ on Saturday, October 27 at the Bayswater store. This is an all-day event. If you are able to volunteer some time to help on the day, please let Martina know. We will need at least 15 to 20 volunteers.

On October 7, CHAMPION will be celebrating five years of service. We haven’t planned a party, but I am sure one of our volunteers will make a cake for us all to enjoy.

We have now ended our Winter Food and Goods Drive and it was a big success. We would like to thank all who helped. The food collected has assisted so many people. During July, we saw 230 adults and 29 children. We received 41 donations, which without we would not have been able to keep up with the number of clients needing our help.

Many thanks to those who assisted with the request to help one of our clients. We will update the people who donated as to where their kind and generous donations went. Needless to say, they made a huge difference!

Want to help this month?

We are looking for a volunteer to pick up fruit and vegetables on a Wednesday morning. If you can give us 1 to 2 hours of your time, that would really be appreciated. Our current volunteers are already stretched to their limits!

As for food and goods, we are running low on tinned fruit, coffee, sugar, cereal and washing powder please.

TTHA

Eva Simo

We are all overjoyed to be towards the end of this bitterly cold Winter! Spring is right around the corner, if the early blooms on the trees are any indication. As we look towards our Spring menu, we are eager to sink our teeth into some of the delicious delights our chef Tim has prepared for our seasonal menu. Spring brings such beautiful offerings in seasonal produce and we will be making the most of it with some delectable treats for all residents to enjoy.

TTHA has been a-buzz lately with a wealth of lifestyle events on offer. We were lucky enough to have the Happy Wanderers visit and entertain us with their stunning singing voices. We always welcome them here, with residents being delighted and joining in with their favourite tunes. Morning Melodies have been a favourite for our bus outings. With the recent weather being so cold and unpredictable, it’s been lovely to get out for a yummy pub lunch and enjoy some magical music with great friends. Outings like these not only keep us warm, but also warm the soul. Happy Hour is another favourite, with regular entertainment joining the refreshments and paired nibbles. Whether tap dancing, singing, a lovely choir or cultural display it’s a wonderful way to finish the week with friends and family.

We are also excited to announce that our Tempting Treats Café is now open to the public seven days a week from 10am to 4pm. The grand opening on August 7 was a wonderful day, with the Café

officially opened by Jake Keogh, Knox Councillor for Dobson Ward. The Café was overflowing with cheerful coffee lovers enjoying their favourite pastry, soaking in the beautiful surroundings and savouring their favourite hot cuppa. So we extend a personal invitation to come in and taste some of the amazing pastries, cakes, muffins and light meals on offer. The coffee is delicious and we offer loyalty cards with a free coffee for regulars. We have daily specials too, so please come in and enjoy the atmosphere, great prices and delicious treats on offer.

TTHA has been saying goodbye to some great friends recently, while also welcoming new ones. We recently said farewell and good luck to our 2017/2018 International Volunteers: Paula, Susanne, Julian, Berkay, Marcel, Philip, Ricci, Patricia and Alex. We take this opportunity to thank them for their efforts and their friendship. Staff and residents will miss them, and we wish them all the very best in their future endeavours. In August, we were excited to welcome our new International Volunteers: Margaux, Lucas, Julia, Till, Gunnar, Till, Leon, Robin and Carlotta. They will be taking on various roles within TTHA, including the Café, reception, maintenance and in our lifestyle program. We wish them all good luck with their twelve months here and look forward to their contributions to the team. Please extend a warm welcome to our new volunteers on your next visit.

We also farewelled Nada, a great friend of TTHA, who had been a long-term volunteer in various roles, largely managing our Café. Nada’s contribution has been so great, and we wish her all the very best in her next adventures. We are always

looking for enthusiastic volunteers; they make a huge difference to our residents and build life-long friends. If you or someone you know would like to volunteer, it is a truly amazing experience and very rewarding. Please contact us if you are interested.

I would like to congratulate Greig Joshua, our employee of the month. Greig is a member of our lifestyle team and was rewarded for his tireless efforts in our lifestyle program. He was nominated for his wonderful customer service, exceptional team work, maintaining strong relationships, his outstanding professionalism and accountability. Thank you Greig and we hope you enjoy your well-earned voucher. Special mentions go to Denise Schake, Trevor, PK and Sanjee for also being nominated for their outstanding contributions to the TTHA family.

We are always looking for wonderful and caring staff members to join our strong team. If you are seeking a long and rewarding career within a caring organisation, and you’re passionate about aged care, TTHA would like to hear from you. We are currently seeking enthusiastic Registered Nurses, PCAs and Community Care Support workers. If this sounds like you, or you would like more information, please contact us on 8720 1333 or at [email protected]

As the blossoms begin to bloom and the sun starts shining, we encourage you to come in and talk to us about your own aged care requirements. The staff is truly wonderful, can answer all of your questions and guide you through the process.

Enjoy your Spring! Farewell to our 2017/2018 International Volunteers

Renate Beilharz

THE FUTURE OF THE TSA

The Templer Community in Australia has had a

very active few months discussing the future of

our Society. Over 200 members, associates and

friends took the opportunity to participate actively

in the discussions. These included 197 people who

came to the Future Forum sessions held in Sydney,

Bentleigh and Bayswater, 213 responses to the

Future Forum survey and 20 contributors to the

Online Forum. In addition, there have been many

conversations in a multitude of social and family

circles. It has been a positive and invigorating

process, even though, as can be expected from a

community of members with a wide range of ages,

interests and priorities, there was plenty of varied

feedback, sometimes even contradictory.

Responses from all of these forums, and surveys,

are being considered and collated by a small team

of Elders. This will be distilled into a document

proposing the TSA’s Vision, Purpose and Strategic

Goals for the next five years, providing direction for

governance and organisational decision-making.

This is a challenge, not just because of the variety

of opinions expressed, but due to the limitations of

language (as expressed by some members on the

Online Forum).

Notwithstanding the challenges, a document is

being produced for discussion by Elders and by

Regional Council before presentation to members.

Members will be updated on progress at the

September AGM.

Although we may be towards the end of this

round of consultation, the conversation should

never end. It is obvious that many people care

about the future of the TSA, and through positive,

constructive conversations, this passion will be

kept alive.

The Online Forum will be kept open for the time

being, so please visit. Have a look at the range

of opinions and thoughts already expressed and

consider contributing your own responses.

18 Templer Talk September 2018

In short, our history has extended over three countries (or continents), building and being part of communities, resulting in the TSA (beginning with Boronia in Australia) and the continuation of the TGD in Degerloch, Germany. It is my view that we have done this well and ought to be proud of the example we set as a community.

We have enormous opportunity to widen our endeavours to the broader community, which has started to occur more in recent times with outside groups utilising our facilities (pilates, tai chi), German language classes, outreach, sporting facilities, Playgroup and services.

There are many community organisations with whom we could collaborate and build partnerships, thus securing our financial sustainability.

I’m involved in Toastmasters, a worldwide communication and leadership organisation (not-for-profit), which could hire rooms at half the price the local Council offers; similar invitations could be extended to groups like Rotary. In any case, there are many external organisations aligned to us with similar community values looking for solutions.

At the recent Future Forums, I observed that community ranks highly on people’s priorities and, indeed, also on my own.

Whilst we have Elders willing to present contemplative services that play an important role for those who like to attend, personally my spirituality is found in a walk in nature or sailing on the high seas… each to their own.

To advance our cause and to better secure our future, I firmly believe we need to modernise all our facilities, including our sporting precincts, accordingly.

This is not a new concept; members have previously proposed a school or a revamp of the Boronia Hall before its eventual sale (with heritage protection it still stands today). Others have talked about what we could do in Bayswater.

With that, I see a community membership – where people may be aligned to our organisation, but have their religion elsewhere – as valuable. It could be something like a junior membership at a sporting club... i.e. allow participation, but without a formal vote at an AGM

Master plans (for all our facilities) would need to be developed from a brief and involve community consultation/input, much like the local Council would do for an asset of theirs. Such would serve our strategy, functions and events, as the TSA, our partner groups and general hirers would operate from a fit-for-purpose facility.

Our online activity would also evolve, as our demographics are accustomed to communicating in today’s world. But participation face-to-face and socially has its place and will long remain so in a connected world.

Rather than a decline in the TSA, I think we have enormous potential… if we want to realise it.

THE FUTURE OF THE TSA:OPINION

Templer Talk September 2018 19

Music transcends all language, all culture, all age and all intellect.

It is a truly universal gift.

Let us fill our lives with music:

music to heal, music to inspire,

music to rejoice to, music to cry to,

music to sing along with, music to pacify,

music for the sad, music for the happy,

music for the melancholy, music that makes us fly.

Let each of us find our own music, and not be afraid to create it.

We know that music is open to interpretation; that is its beauty.

There is no right, no wrong, no perfect.

Let each of us find and sing along to our own songs, move to our own beat, create our own rhythm and assemble our own playlist.

And then let each of us bring our music to others, to share and work with the group. When we hit a bung note, give us the patience and will to tinker and try again and practise until we find the sweetest of notes and most heavenly of harmonies.

Let us embrace all genres of music, learn a little from each, listen to many different instruments and appreciate the tone and sound of each.

Then let us bring all our music together: all our songs, our instruments, our voices... to create marvellous orchestras, choirs, symphonies and melodies.

Let’s ensure our music, our creations and our message have meaning for us and reflect who we are. Let our music guide us, like a shining light showing us the way home.

And then, let us take our music on the road and share it with the world. Let’s see who claps along, let’s see who likes our soundtrack and let’s see who shouts “hallelujah”.

Let’s sing, let’s croon, let’s warble, let’s hum,

Let’s pluck, let’s blow, let’s ring and let’s strum.

Let’s trumpet our sound and let’s beat our drum

and let some minor discord not bring us undone.

And let’s listen... with intent.

Let this be our music.

Let this be our challenge.

Amen

20 Templer Talk September 2018

The Templers and the Bentleigh Hall played host in August to what for many was a moving, eye-opening and educational night of connections: the screening of WATAN, an Australian-made documentary giving a short, but emotional insight to the lives of Syrians living in refugee camps in Jordan.

“We brought popcorn, but it wasn’t a popcorn type of movie,” said Susi Richter. This described the movie well; others said powerful and important. The Director, Bill Irving (the son of Erica Wagner), summarised it simply and appropriately as “just a story really needing to be told”.

It was an insight into the world of those who live a completely different existence, but still manage to see the positives in what they are faced with, all the while hoping to return to WATAN – the Syrian word for homeland.

In our commitment to raise awareness, in addition to the powerful message the movie screening conveyed to the 71 who attended, the night also raised $640 for the Refugee Council of Australia!
