The Asian University for Women (AUW) is a leading institution of higher education based on the firm belief that education—especially higher education—provides a critical pathway to leadership development, economic progress, and social and political equality. Located in Chittagong, Bangladesh, AUW provides a world-class education to promising young women from diverse cultural, religious, ethnic, and socio- economic backgrounds from across South and South East Asia and the Middle East. In 2009, AUW will be recruiting applicants from Myanmar/Burma for both the Access Academy and the Undergraduate Program. Access Academy The Access Academy is a year-long pre-undergraduate program that prepares students from underprivileged communities for a rigorous university education. The first Access Academy class of 129 students has been welcomed in March 2008, and will graduate the program in time to join the first class of undergraduates of the Asian University for Women in August 2009. The Academy addresses the various needs of students in terms of academic preparation, social and cultural adjustment, youth mentorship, counseling, technological skills, and recreation. Through these comprehensive efforts, the Access Academy encourages young women to be assertive, confident, and culturally sensitive. Curriculum: The Access Academy program focuses on providing content- oriented English language studies, with a significant emphasis on writing and verbal expression, mathematics and quantitative reasoning, and computer skills training. There is an emphasis on developing critical thinking skills throughout the curriculum. Students are assigned to course levels in English and mathematics based on the results of their entrance exams. Courses in mathematics include a focus on statistics, taught in a problem-solving manner. Courses in English are designed to integrate the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and are led by qualified teachers who are native speakers of English. Students from outside of Bangladesh have the opportunity to receive Bengali language instruction and attend gym classes.

Access Academy entrance requirements:

- Young females whose parents are NOT University graduates.- Age: 17-25 years- Education: Completion of 10+2= 12 years of education

OR- Significant work experience and/or completion of non-accredited trainingprograms (for applicants over the age of 20 who have not completed 12 yearsof education).- Intention for leading and working for the advancement of own country andworld society.

- You do not need a passport in order to apply. AUW will support reasonablecosts for your travel documents, if you are accepted into the program.

Undergraduate Program 

The undergraduate program at the Asian University for Women will be offeredas a collaborative effort among three main academic divisions within theUniversity: humanities/arts, social sciences, and natural sciences.

Students may choose a five-year program that will culminate in the completionof both a bachelor's and master's degree, or a traditional four-year bachelor's

degree program. The five-year program will consist of a three-yearundergraduate curriculum followed by two years of specialized graduateprofessional training from a selection of the following areas of study:

1.  Information and communication technology,2.  Business management, public policy, and education.

Students will also have the opportunity to engage in various internships withpublic and private organizations in countries across the region.
