Beachstone ReikiLocal Reiki Healing Treatments

What is reiki?Reiki is a simple, gentle, hands-on, natural, and safe method of energy healing that everyone can

use. There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive a Reiki treatment. The Japanese word Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is actually made up of two Japanese words: "rei" meaning universal and "ki" meaning life force, often referred to as chi (chee) or the Hindu/Indian idea of prana. Literally, Reiki means Universal Life Force.

Reiki is an ancient 2,500 year old healing technique rediscovered in the 1850’s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian monk. With his colleague, Dr. Hayashi, Dr. Usui developed the Usui system, which was brought to the United States in 1973 by Mrs. Takata.

Reiki practitioners serve as a conduit for this energy. They do not have to use their own energy, and instead of being drained by the process, they also receive healing energy as the Reiki passes through them. This energy enters through the crown of the head and is directed out through the palms. It is an inherently positive energy that goes where it is needed; cleansing, energizing, and vitalizing. It balances the energy system, and helps the body, mind and spirit do their work more efficiently so that the recipient receives whatever is needed in their current situation. Effects are always for the highest healing good. Reiki can also be used to treat and energize plants, animals, food, water, herbs, crystals, and other substances.

Reiki supports the whole person including body, emotions, mind, and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation, feelings of peace, security, and well-being.

Sandra Burgess Williams is a Reiki Master taught in the oral tradition.

Sandra learned Reiki I and Reiki II in 1992 from Libby Barnett, MSW. Many years later, after working in retail management and raising her son and daughter, Sandra returned to her Reiki roots by receiving her Reiki Master attunement from Libby.

Sandra feels honored to offer Reiki as the early teachers taught it in order to preserve the integrity and authenticity of this simple, ancient form of healing. She feels blessed by this sacred healing art and wishes to help others promote health and inner wisdom. Sandra blends her intuitive skills with her interest in charka balancing, crystals, and guided meditation.

Children’s ChoirDirected by Becky Paul

I am so looking forward to singing with the children of Channing Church again!!! This summer, I was lucky enough to attend two Mid-Summer Sing Workshops with Sue Robbins, director and founder of Libana. Libana is a women’s world music ensemble based in Somerville, MA. The group is currently traveling throughout the remote villages of Bulgaria, learning the native songs of the culture, in order to bring the music home and pass it on. Many of the songs the children sang last year were inspired by this unique and talented group. This year will include Peace songs in several different languages. I am so excited to begin rehearsals with the children’s choir next month, and pass on to them a new and inspiring repertoire.Rehearsals will be held on Thursday evenings from 6:30 – 7:30pm in the children’s chapel beginning September 25th . The children’s choir performs during worship services throughout the year. Children can sign up for choir during Orientation Day on Sept. 14 th.

The important thing is to feel your music, really feel it and believe it.Ray Charles

OPEN HOUSEOPEN HOUSESeptember 21st 10am-1pm

Help us celebrate National Neighborhood Day!

Our service begins at 10 am Sunday. A luncheon will follow the service with tours of our historic church, chances to win door prizes, children’s activities, and information about our programs,

upcoming events and Religious Education classes. Please bring a nonperishable food item to be given to the neighborhood Food Bank.

Sunday, September 21, 2008 is National Neighborhood Day! Join us and people in communities all over America as we gather to welcome new neighbors and rekindle connections after the summer months. These gatherings foster caring and concern for each other and promote stronger more effective communities. National Neighborhood Day is the Third Sunday in September each year.

National Neighborhood Day is a grassroots, nonprofit initiative that offers an opportunity for simple gatherings sharing food and fun. A chance to celebrate the things we all share and discover the diversity among us that makes America great. There is no agenda and no prescription. Let's have fun! Rekindle friendships. Meet new neighbors. Bring the kids! Learn about each others' families, interests and needs. Gather current contact information (phone, e-mails) for the neighborhood. Brainstorm neighborhood issues/projects we and our children might work on together! Getting to know each other better will make our neighborhood stronger, more secure and an even friendlier place to live!

Prudential Committee NewsSubmitted by Cheryl Gardner

On behalf of the Prudential Committee, I want to say how excited we are to have Reverend Ed Hardy coming to preach from our pulpit twice a month. He is a fantastic preacher whose sermons will stick with you for a long time after you hear them. Reverend Hardy is currently the minister at the First Parish Church in Bridgewater. He is a practicing Buddhist but his sermons speak eloquently to people of all faiths.

Our arrangements with Reverend Hardy are different than those we've had with ministers in the past. Reverend Hardy's responsibility to us is to preach twice a month and to spend time with us during the coffee hour following the services he leads. Because of our financial limitations, we have not been able to hire him for things like visiting the sick, meeting with those in crisis, or supporting our various committees. By being with us two Sundays a month, however, Reverend Hardy is providing us with a great deal. He gives us a consistent voice in the pulpit and a ministerial presence in our church, he strengthens the bonds we have with First Parish Bridgewater, he ministers to our children by providing a children's moment in the service, and he provides us with fellowship during coffeehour. We feel very fortunate to have Reverend Hardy with us at Channing Church and look forward to a fantastic church year!

Church resumes on September 7th, with our Water Communion.Don't forget to bring along water from your travels.

Don’t Forget!! The Prudential Committee is making some big changes to our little newsletter. These changes

are progressing and won't be in full effect until fall. Right now you may be getting two versions of the newsletter: an email version and a paper copy.

To eliminate the extra financial and environmental costs of producing a paper copy when an email copy is possible, we will begin to send out just the email version. If we don't have your email address on file, but you do have one, we'd love to add it to our list. You can email it to our secretary, Aaren Arena, at [email protected] and it will be added to the list of addresses for the newsletter.

If you don't have email, don't worry! We'll still send out a paper copy of the newsletter to our friends who are not online. Also, if you no longer wish to receive our newsletter, please just drop us a line by mail to the church office at 45 Webster Street, Rockland, Massachusetts 02370 or an email at [email protected].

Help us to be a church that manages well its own resources and the resources of our world.

A few words of appreciation:

Bob Smith was our secretary for eight years. He came to our church when we really needed some organization in the office. He did a remarkable job organizing our office so that it was well functioning and everything in its proper places.

He has worked through the remodeling on our office, health issues, his own busy schedule and also being secretary of UU Church in Brockton. When our office flooded everything was moved into a very small space, which you could only turn around in, but his spirit was undaunted. His work never reflected any disturbance or disorder.

He did a great job editing our newsletters and always made them interesting to read with his space filling articles. Many of the times he would have to chase people down for their articles. (Phil Berry)

He would attend many of our functions and came quite often to help work on putting our stuff out for our annual yard sale. He also attends some of our services.

To cut back on some budget expenses we had to let Bob go. However, he was very understanding of the church’s position and he left as Channing’s secretary with grace.

Bob Smith was not only a noteworthy secretary, but he is a dear friend to our church, and a wonderful person to know. Thanks Bob for always supporting us. Hope to see you soon

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You ...From all your friends at Channing

See A Penny, Pick It Up!!We will be starting a penny race fundraiser September 14th! Anyone can enter the race for $1 entry fee. There will be two teams competing to raise the most pennies. Each team will have their own bottle located in Channing Hall and anyone can place change or dollars in either container. Each

penny counts as one point but any silver coins or dollar bills count against the team. For example, if Team A has one quarter and Team B has 25 pennies, Team B is the winner because

Team A has minus 25 points. Our race will end January 11th and the team with the most points will be served Hot Chocolate and S’mores by the losing team.

RE NEWS: By Becky Paul, DRE

RegistrationAll children must be registered annually for religious ed. classes. Parents will receive a program brochure and registration form by September 1st. Open enrollment will be held at Channing on Sunday, September 14th. Simply fill out the registration form and return to the Director of Religious Education. We appreciate your attention to this process as it helps us to maintain an important and accurate record.

The “new” year is just around the corner and our plans are really shaping upfor what we hope will be one of our best years yet! With the committee’s decision to try a new format, we will have 10 volunteer teachers working with us this year! Below is a schedule outlining the five 6 week sessions. There is one session left in need of a volunteer teacher: Session II Native American Religions, at the Elementary 2 level. There are 6 children in this class, all girls. We have purchased the “Honoring Our Mother Earth” curriculum, however teachers are free to use other resources if they prefer. This session begins Sunday, Nov. 16 and ends with the Winter Spiral on Dec 21. Also a Thanksgiving service will be on Nov 23, so there would actually only be 4 classes in this session. Please contact the DRE if you areinterested in joining our team of volunteers. I’m very excited to have somany new teachers this year, bringing new energy and diverse styles andperspectives to our program.

This year’s volunteer teachers include:Katie Tierney, Danette Carter, Susan Kavka, Marc Tierney, Gary Paul,

Debby Arena, Paul Anderson, Margaret Holmes, Cheryl Gardner, and Becky Paul.

Annual Yard Sale! Our Annual Yard Sale/Bake Sale is to be held on Saturday, September 27

from 9a.m. to 2 p.m. This is one of our biggest fundraisers!! We will need lots of good stuff and good food! The past couple years the Bake Sale has done really well and has been extremely popular! Please pre-price all bake goods. You can bring in your yard sale stuff anytime from now until the week before. Leave it in the RE building out back. Please do not leave anything in the main hall.

PLEASE, NO EXCERCISE EQUIPMENT, NO LARGE APPLIANCES, NO COMPUTERS!

Any large donated items that do not sell, we will require the donor to take them back. This is necessary so the Church will not have to pay to have them discarded. Our goal is profits, not expenses! All items should be clean and in working condition.

We thank you so much for your co-operation and understanding with these requests. They are all based on experiences from past yard sales.

We will need everyone’s help to setup the week of September 22nd-26th. There will be a sign up sheet available for times to help in mornings and evenings. Don’t forget the tent raising on Friday night at 6pm. Please arrive at 7:30 Saturday morning to help bring everything outside. We are requesting that you be present the day of the sale to help work it! And for the clean-up afterwards! We need everything back in order for the next day’s regular Sunday Service.
