Vertical Folding Doors

Leda’s new vertical folding doors have a major advantage over opposition products in that when raised they do not protude back into the building. The unique folding design provides sub-stantial space saving over conventional doors. They can also be insulated and are extremely quiet when operating.

New Double Height Bike Rack

Leda has added a new model to our dual height bike storage range. It incorporates “power assisted lift” through gas strut engineering and also includes a unique back wheel support system which is activated as the bike is loaded onto the support mechanism.

The racks are supported on base plated SHS columns which are simply bolted to existing concrete floor slabs making them suitable for installing in new or retrofit projects.

New Improved Bike Rack Designs

26 of our BRV26 bike racks have recently been manufactured and installed by Leda’s Sydney branch for a government department that prefers to remain anonymous.

The BRV26 racks are extremely easy to use. The cyclist simply tilts the bike onto the back wheel and the pushes it onto wheel support. Stability and a device to lock the bicycle is provided by the “leaning rails” which are part of the design.

“X” Rack

This stand alone rack has also undergone modifications to improve its design and ver-satility. Supplied as a DIY product it is simple and easy to put together.

“Ottawa City” the capital of Canada, has now something highly visible in its CBD, Securabike “Cadillac Rack Corral Bike Parking”.

These brightly coloured Bike Parking Structures were manufactured by Leda Security Products Ningbo and installed by our Canadian reseller, “Beyond the Garage Door”. The pilot project was launched to determine bike parking usage as part of a city and community-wide push to encourage cycling in Ottowa.

“We’re proud of our achievements in secur-ing the contract to supply these Securabike Corrals to our clients in Ottowa – thanks to Leda who have been supporting us all the way” indicated Steve Buccioni from “Beyond the Garage Door”.

“The Cadillac Rack style bike corrals have drawn widespread interest and attention, including being featured on prime time news on Canadian media channels. “Our product designs are eye-catching and offered a per-suasive value proposition to our Canadian clients – the publicity it’s attracted has been more that what we had envisaged!” accord-ing to James Rossi, Leda’s Production Manager.”

Unsurprisingly, support for bike parking in the area continues to grow. These Leda-manufactured Corrals occupy only a single car space but allow up to 12 bicycles to be parked in the same area. Deployment of bike corals in other cities has subsequently created other opportunies for small busi-nesses in the immediate area, resulting in higher number of customers and increased sales turnover for local retailers.

A recent development hot on the back of the “Ottowa Corrals” is the development of a new corral for the City of Toronto, also designed and manufactured by Leda Ningbo. This new bespoke design features space to accommo-date up to 14 bikes on a single car parking space, security rails, prominent bike parking

livery and reflective signage. The corral also features a stackable / flat pack design which will allow the complete unit to be demount-able, transportable and scaleable - if there was a need to expand or move the system.

Leda will continue in assisting city planners and engineers to attract growing numbers of casual cyclists to designated locations by ret-rofitting our Securabike bike corall systems.

Vertical Bike Racks

Leda’s popular BR2101 vertical bike rack is now also available with “hot dipped galvanised finish”. This model was previously only available in french blue powder coated finish which is the standard Securabike colour.

This picture featured shows the BR2101’s with “HDG” (hot dipped galvanised) finish that were installed at a University of Queensland campus.

Whitehouse City Bike Cage

Leda’s Victorian staff have been involved with this project with Whitehouse City Council since early concept stage 18 months ago.

The bike cage (designed for council staff) was manufactured utilising modular 358 mesh panels (anti climb) and a simple card entry with free access control was fitted.

Council staff ride a number of different bike styles which required the installation of three different Securabike products – CBR4SC bike racks for horizontal storage, BR2101 racks for vertical storage and BR85 bike rails for cyclists with lie down extended bikes. In addition we supplied and installed a number of BCL03, three door clothes lockers inside the cage.

Westfield Macquarie

Westfield Macquarie are in the process of upgrading their bicycle parking facilities and have ordered 47 off of our CBR178 (10 bike) racks. When completed the new facility will provide bicycle parking for over 400 cyclists.

Bassendean Shopping Centre

Leda’s attractive “urban” range of bollards that combine “steel and timber” continue to be a popular choice of architects.

58 of these urban bollards were recently installed by our WA team at the “Bassendean” shopping centre expansion for Pact Construction.

Ram Raid Protection for Retailer

Leda QLD supplied and installed impact rated security bol-lards to secure and protect the premises for a high end retailer recently. Installation of the 150NB bollards was suc-cessfully completed by core drilling and epoxying into posi-tion, a method pioneered and perfected by Leda. The project was undertaken after hours and completed within the time-line required.

Completing a successful bollard installation is only possi-ble if the selected product will meet the potential threat and impact resistance. Leda has a wide range of security bol-lards which are designed to cater from ram raid protection to anti terrorist (PAS68 certified) applications.

In addition experienced Leda staff are available to visit and asses your site, and make recommendations that will best safeguard and protect your premises.

In the move to driverless (remote controlled) vehicles on mine sites around Australia contin-ues to gain momentum. This has provided Leda engineers with another challenge “protecting staff and service vehicles” which need to cross the path of the remote controlled monsters.

BHP commissioned Leda to design and develop a “portable solar powered boom gate system” they could introduce at transit points for other vehicles.

Luke Newick our WA manager who project managed advised:

“The issues we faced with this design was the unit had to be both easily mobile and also user friendly when dropping into location and packing up.

Leda designed the unit on a 1500x1500mm gal-vanised skid.

The skid had the following features:

-Forklift access on all sides

-Lifting Pins to ensure multiple methods of offloading and loading

-Adjustable jacks to enable levelling on un-level ground

-Integrated spirit level to ensure level

-Compact design for transportation

-Extendable and 180 degree panel directions to ensure optimum sun shine.

-IP56 rated enclosures.

We were required to make solar allowances for up to 300 operations per 24hour period to support all electronics on board. i.e Boom gate, Cardax access control, Safety Beam, LED & Piezo signals.

M O B I L E S O L A R P O W E R

We provided this with dual 32 Watt American technology solar panels and German quality 6v 330ah battery banks.

Once these boom gates are set up on a remote or temporary site only a person with autho-rised access and valid site induction can pass through the entry & exit points. At the same time providing a full audit trail of the person-nel in this area.

This application would be ideal for a mine site application with a continually rolling pit access or construction access point, temporary con-struction site access, waste management site, or as a temporary security measure when a fixed boom gate of perimeter gate is out of order.

Utilising the solar and the wireless network access control system there is no requirement for extensive 240v or communication trench infrastructure.

Another benefit on the product is a electrician or technician does not have to mobilise to site, complete extensive inductions, accommoda-tion, medical of safety requirements as the unit is completely mobile and can be sent back to our Malaga, WA warehouse for prompt repairs, maintenance or complete over haul of the unit and shipped straight back to site with a minimal freight charge”.

Pedestrian Gate Hardware

Leda’s pedestrian gates and doors will in future be designed and manufactured using “Kaba Australia” door hardware. The change is a result of an agreement between both companies CEO’s to work more closely together in the future.

Both Leda and Kaba have products that either compliment each other or parts and systems which can be incorporated into each companies designs.

It is envisaged that the arrangement will be beneficial commercial outcomes for both companies.

Visy Recycling

Leda Security were selected to supply and install industrial boom gates at numerous Visy Recycling depots across Australia. This included all states except Northern Territory

The project had its challenges, not only for some of the locations but also for varying site conditions. The client required technicians to be available nationally to support / service and supply parts to the product for all sites and this can be made pos-sible due to Leda having state branches in WA, SA, Vic, NSW and QLD.

Roxborough College

This busy secondary college required an automated sliding gate to be installed at the front entrance of their staff car park

The gate needed to be open for a short time in the morning and afternoon for the teachers.

The remainder of the day the gate must remained closed and could only be operated by transponders located in each teach-ers car.

As the teachers car approached the gate from either the outside or inside, the RF signal went back to device located in the gate logics. This identified the driver and granted access by the gate opening.

This system is very new and the concept is one of the first used here in Australian in this type of application.

Ergon Energy

Ergon Energy’s recent upgrade to their Bundaberg depot called for the installation of new vehicular access gates on both the entry and exit of their site. Leda also replaced the chain wire fence with our premier security fencing system. Murchie Constructions from Bundaberg were awarded the design and project management contract.

Being an existing site placed a number of restrictions on designs. Extensive planning of footing locations was needed to miss existing plumbing and electrical services.

The entry gate is 5.7mt long while the exit is only 4.1mt. Both are cantilever designs and are fitted with:

- Dual PE beams

- Siren and flashing lights

- 100% duty cycle drive motors

The Leda Security CRB11DF card reader bollards both had to be mounted slightly exposed. It was decided to protect them from accidental damage from trucks with our distinc-tive protective “P” bollards.

Endeavour Energy - Bifold Gates

While we have featured these bifold gates previously (Newsletter no 34) we thought it worthwhile mentioning again. The main reason is that Leda is in the process of upgrading their drive system with new “state of the art” technology.

Leda’s engineering department has been working on the improved design for most of this year and have recently completed extensive cycle testing at our Tuggerah headquarters.

The two bifold gates previously installed providing separate “entry” and “exit” passages to the site.

Boom Gates Provide OH&S Solution

Leda’s NSW team recently installed two new 8.0mt boom gates at Volvo’s Eastern Creek truck servicing centre.

Volvo management were concerned about security and safety through unau-thorised pedestrian traffic which prompted them to contract Leda to design a solution.

Remote Gate Installs

This is another of the many remotely located sites where Leda has manufac-tured and installed perimeter security involving both pedestrian and vehicular access control.

Leda have been involved on this particu-lar project for over 2 years, with locations across the country.

Managing installations on remote sites is always a challenge with fly in fly out sites. We are faced with changing weather con-ditions and vast amount of coordination of resources that need to take place.

Defender Barriers for Prisons

The “defender high security boom gates” have been widely installed at numerous correctional centre across the UK for many years however it is only recently that authorities in Australia have come to appreciate the features and benefits of these unique HVM barriers.

While Leda have successfully installed dozens of the defend-ers in high security sites across Australia the first correctional centre to order units is a prison in Victoria.

The “defender” boom gates are a perfect fit for correctional centres due to their lower initial capital outlay (to supply and install) than alternative (road blockers or retractable bollards) products. They also generally require less maintenance and are easier to service. The defender boom gates being located above ground will also normally provide a much longer service life.

Leda has three defender models each tested (to PAS68) and certified to provide different levels of security.

- D941 3.5 tonne @ 48km/h

- D942 7.5 tonne @ 48km/h

- D945 7.5 tonne @ 64km/h

The defenders feature world-leading fibre strap technology that is incorporated into the boom arms. To maintain secu-rity levels after an impact, the unique “composite Cassette” system is designed to allow replacement of the beam within 20 minutes.

Using shallow depth footing designs (500mm), the steel stanchions capture and distribute the impact loads.

IGA Supermarket Chooses Leda Dock Leveller

This local IGA branch in the Gold Coast Hinterland recently installed a Leda automated hydraulic dock leveller. Outside in the elements this unit receives goods from all manner of trucks of various sizes. Leda has installed dock products to a number of national grocery chains such as Aldi and in places as far afield as Newman in the far North West of Western Australia. See our “Industrial Doors and Loading Docks” handbook for all loading dock options.

New ERP System for Leda After comprehensive investigation and deliberation a decision was made earlier this year to replace the “Sage” ERP system that has been in operation for nearly 10 years.

The new system (EXO) goes online during September follow-ing extensive training of Leda staff that will be using the soft-ware. Various courses for sales, production, admin and installation staff from around the country were carried out mostly at Leda’s Tuggerah head office.

The new ERP system is extremely transparent, easier to use, pro-vides improved project costing, systems and reporting and most importantly is designed to improve communication between depart-ments and Leda branches and ultimately customer satisfaction.

SIG 2014 Held each year “Security in Government” is an important exhi-bition for Leda’s high security personnel when they get the opportunity to re-establish contacts with many of the delegates that attend this important annual conference. It also allows our staff to profile new high security products and literature.

A Perfect Project for our Robot

Leda’s Sydney office recently won a major con-tract to supply some 600 of our “HD industrial bollards”.

The “HD” high security bollards are manufac-tured and installed in two pieces providing the flexibility of unbolting and removing the above ground bollard section if required.

There is a considerable amount of welding involved on each of these large sections making it an ideal project for our robot.

The robotic welder has managed to halve the welding time from 50 to less than 30 minutes per section and as an added bonus is capable of working a double shift each day.

C H A N G E AG E N T

All businesses need to evolve and Leda is no dif-ferent if not requiring more technical innovation across our four divisions. This article is to cele-brate one of our people who bought about positive change within our company. I would like to regu-larly update both our customers and staff on inno-vation and changes brought about by our people. The company long ago became too large for all the ideas and change to come from the top. I would love to encourage all of our staff to participate in putting forth ideas to either improve existing prac-tices or innovate to provide our customers new solutions and possibilities.

This newsletters change agent at Leda is Gary Hicks. Gary is the service and installation manager in New South Wales. Gary has been responsible for the servicing of bifold gates and was an inte-gral part in identifying potential improvements with our existing design and researching potential solu-tions to improve them. This precipitated a chain of events through design, manufacturing and sales which has led to Leda being able to offer world-class bifold gates manufactured in Australia. In 2014 as far as I’m aware, Leda is the only company able to manufacture trackless bifold gates here in Australia and with our new designs coming on board in 2014, I am confident that our bifold gate offerings have improved greatly.

The main issue manufacturers of bifold gates expe-rience is how to mechanically position the outer or second gate leaf into the closed position. This was particularly prevalent in a job Leda installed in 2013 which did not meet the high standards that all of our team have become accustomed to. Rather than patchwork improvements and other cover-up jobs, Leda have approached the situation from the ground up and virtually started again in relation to the design. As mentioned the change agent for this chain of events was Gary as it was he who had to deal with the issues in the field and it was he who identified potential solutions which again were then able to be actioned through design and manufacturing.

As change in any organization is extremely difficult, it is important to celebrate and discuss innovation

when it occurs. To this end I would like to thank Gary for his work in improving our product offerings at Leda. Such work not only improves our customers’ experience but also means that our company is innovating and building for the future. I would invite all of our staff or even customers to forward ideas and agitate for change as it is one of the key foundations of the success of any long-term business. As Leda enters its 19th year of busi-ness I am often reminded that the number of businesses that reach 20 years in operation are very few and it is a testament to the efforts of many people over many years to see a busi-ness evolve and improve over such a long period of time. It is through efforts like this I am sure that we will be evolving and innovating for many years to come.
