For God So Loved the World

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life."

John 3:16 Most believers know this verse by heart. Even non-believers are somewhat familiar with it. Kim and I hosted a dinner for our neigh-bors on Stanton Street here in San Angelo one night. We were laughing and visiting and just enjoying ourselves when there was that awkward moment when, as if on cue, everyone stopped talk-ing all at once and there was just silence. The awkward silence was thankfully broken by one of our neighbors: "Hey, Lakan. During football games and they are about to kick a PAT, somebody always holds up a sign that says, 'John 3:16.' What is that?" When I was a brand-new believer in 1973, I traveled by bus with a group of American Field Service exchange students from different countries on our way home. Our group presented a program at every town where we stopped and spent a few days. A friend from Japan could not read music but played the piano beautifully. A girl from Argentina performed some native dances. Several sang. Others played different musical instruments. I shared John 3:16, the only verse I knew. They started calling me preacher.

For God So Loved (continued)

The message is to the point: God's loved expressed by the giving of

His Son, Jesus Christ, and whosoever believes in Him will not perish

but have eternal life. A lot of people get the message. Not everyone

responds. I would say most believers believe most of the message. Except for the little word "world."

We easily appropriate the verse to ourselves. We are thankful that

God sent Jesus to die for our sins. And we would admit the reason He

came is because sinful us cannot save ourselves. We certainly love

the eternal life part, although too often we view it so narrowly we

think it only means a ticket to heaven. So we wallow in our circum-

stances, surviving more than living. But what we believe about what

the verse says is tested when we begin to think of other people need-

ing salvation.

A serial killer getting saved? No way! Muslim terrorists responsible for all kinds of atrocities becoming followers of Christ? Are you kidding?

We bristle at the thought that they too can be forgiven at the cross. I

still remember my skepticism when I first heard that Manuel Noriega

got saved. "No way that dictator can get saved!" I thought. I was at-

tending a prayer conference at the Heart of Texas Baptist Camp at

Lake Brownwood when I heard Henry Blackaby tell the story of how

Noriega came to know Christ. I do not know if he really is a believer

but it made me realize how my heart reeked of pride. For pride was

what made me think I could be saved but not others. Pride made me

better suited and more deserving of the gospel than others.

"For God so loved the world..." We are all in the same boat. Sinners and rebels in need of forgiveness. No one is better. Nobody is better

deserving. The gospel condemns us all and then offers forgiveness

through Jesus' finished work at the cross to everyone. "Whoever be-

lieves..." Even serial killers and rapists and Muslim terrorists and dic-

tators. Even Lakan.

Every Parent wants to raise great kids, yet often we fall short of our dreams. Sometimes we’re just too busy and distracted. Some of us had less than ideal role models. Some of us are working at it, but we just don’t have a good game plan. Are you willing to invest one day in order to empower your kids... forever? With God’s help and a plan, you can raise truly great kids. This conference is a grace-based, character-driven model to nurture con-fident and cooperative kids-and have a great time in the process.

Parenting is the biggest job you will ever do. Give it your best.

This fun, fast-paced conference delves into:

What it takes to raise kids in the midst of busy lives.

Practical ways to take the fear out and put the fun back into parenting

Preparing your child’s heart to re-ceive God’s plan

Turning heartache to hope with your rebellious child

How to bring out the best in your strong-willed child

Creating an environment of love and respect

Giving your child tools to practically deal with their culture

How to lead your child to be a great adult

When it comes to parenting, the days are long... but the years are short.
