The Grove City College women’s swimmingteam enters its 21st season of intercollegiate com-petition with just seven upperclassmen on theroster.

But to think that the Wolverines will be inex-perienced this year would be a big mistake.

Grove City returns 13 letterwinners from lastyear’s squad that finished second in the Presidents’Athletic Conference. Included in that group are fourathletes who provisionally qualified for the NCAADivision III Championships in their first year of col-legiate swimming.

Interim head coach John Richards -- who alsoguided Grove City to a 5-4 record in 2003-04 -- willrely on a five-person senior class this year for lead-ership.

Seniors Whitney Fairchild, Rebecca Smiddy andRuth Wiedeman return to help anchor Grove City’sdistance corps. Fairchild is a three-year letterwinnerand a two-year team captain.

Smiddy, meanwhile, made an immediate impactin her first full season at Grove City last winter. She moved into Grove City’s top three all-time inthe 500, 1000 and 1650 in 2007-08 and will againbe one of Grove City’s top distance entries.

Wiedeman is a two-year letterwinner who willalso be counted on in the distance events this year.

Two other versatile competitors are also backfor their fourth season at Grove City. Senior LIzaMcRuer is a three-year letterwinner in the sprintsand breaststroke.

McRuer is a past All-PAC performer for the Wol-verines.

Also back is senior Alyse Brannon. Brannonmoved to the diving board last year and finishedeighth in the conference on the 1-meter board. She also lettered twice as a backstroker and couldagain see time in that event also.

Juniors Andra Reed and Amanda Thompson arealso back. Reed is a two-year letterwinner and willbolster Grove City in the breaststroke and indi-vidual medley.

Thompson will likely be Grove City’s top entryin the backstroke after setting school records inboth the 100 and 200 backstroke last year. She isa returning provisional NCAA qualifier.

Grove City will also count on a six-personsophomore class in 2008-09. All six athletes madesignificant contributions as freshmen.

Sophomores Lauren Baur and Sarah Page bothreturn to help lead Grove City’s efforts in thesprints this season. Baur, who will also competeas one of the Wolverines’ top butterfliers, earnedAll-PAC Honorable Mention in both the 50 and 100free last year.

Sophomore sprinter Sarah Page is the defendingPresidents’ Athletic Conference champion in the50, 100 and 200 free.

Page closed her rookie season by sweeping the50, 100 and 200 free at the season-ending Grove CityInvitational/PAC Championships. Page earned themeet’s High Point Award and also provisionally quali-fied for the NCAA Championships.

Also back for their second year are breaststrokersSarah Bargery and Katie Brunk, freestyle performerTiffani Douglas and diver Stephanie McNeill.

Bargery highlighted her freshman season by break-ing Grove City’s long-standing record in the 200 breast-stroke. She will also be an integral part of Grove City’srelay efforts this year.

Brunk enters 2008-09 looking to build on a strongfreshman season. She is one of the top returningbreaststrokers in the conference and has already bro-ken into the program’s all-time top 10.

Douglas will again bolster Grove City’s deep dis-tance corps after her strong rookie season. McNeill, meanwhile, is Grove City’s top returning diver. She willlook to capture a conference title on the board afterearning runner-up in 3-meter diving last year.

Several newcomers are also expected to makeimmediate contributions this year for Grove City.

The Wolverines’ 2008-09 schedule features dualmeets against perennial powers Carnegie Mellon,Denison, Kenyon and Wooster, along with the tradi-tionally rugged conference slate.

The Grove City College women’s swimming anddiving team celebrated its 20th season of intercolle-giate competition in 2007-08 in record-setting fash-ion.

The Wolverines smashed seven long-standingGrove City records during the season and producedfive NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Champion-ships qualifiers.

Grove City capped the 2007-08 season by placingsecond at the season-ending Presidents’ Athletic Con-ference Championships, the program’s best finish innearly a decade.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Confer-ence continues its mission of promoting intercollegiateathletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.

Comprised of 10 select private institutions - BethanyCollege, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove CityCollege, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, ThomasMore College, Washington & Jefferson College,Waynesburg University and Westminster College - thePAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics.

With academics at the center of each member’s phi-losophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an ath-letic program is a part of college life, but not an entity initself.

During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham Col-lege, Geneva College and Saint Vincent College all joinedthe PAC. Chatham competed for PAC championshipsfor the first time during the 2007-08 academic year.Geneva and Saint Vincent are playing full conferenceschedules during their time as provisional members ofNCAA Division III.

The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports.All-Conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Headcoaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country andtennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performancesat the conference championships.

The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’sAll-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform bestacross the board in conference competition. Washing-ton & Jefferson won the Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2007-08 while Westminster won the Women’s All-Sports Tro-phy.

In 2007-08, the league named 660 student-athletesto the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes allparticipating student-athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

The beautifully landscapedcampus of Grove City Collegestretches over 150 acres and in-cludes 27 neo-Gothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveli-est in the nation.

While the College haschanged to meet the needs ofthe society it serves, its basic phi-losophy has remained un-changed since its founding in1876. It is a Christian, liberal artsinstitution, dedicated to the prin-ciple of providing the highestquality education at the lowestpossible cost.

Wishing to remain truly inde-pendent and to retain its distinc-tive qualities as a private schoolgoverned by private citizens(trustees), it is one of few col-leges in the country that doesnot accept federal funds.

Affiliated with the Presbyte-rian Church (U.S.A.), but not nar-rowly denominational, the Col-lege believes that to be well-edu-cated a student should be ex-posed to the central ideas of theJudeo-Christian tradition.

Grove City College offers un-dergraduate degrees in liberalarts, sciences, engineering, busi-ness, and music and is distin-guished as a national leader ineducation.

Grove City’s programs inelectrical and mechanical engi-neering are accredited by the En-gineering Accreditation Commis-sion Board of the AccreditationBoard for Engineering and Tech-nology.

The “big business school cur-riculum” prepares students fortoday’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internshipopportunities are providedacross the curriculum.

Grove City College wants itsstudents to be prepared in thisage of mobile information tech-nology.

Each freshman receives anotebook computer which is hisor hers to keep upon graduationwith a four-year degree.

This is part of the InformationTechnology Initiative, a total pro-gram integrating technologyacross the curriculum.

The College believes that itsstudent body has a unique mixof talents and abilities. Its CareerServices program helps studentsidentify those key assets duringthe first year and then builds afour-year strategy to help thempursue a satisfying career.

Personal counseling, profes-sional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer intern-ships, corporate visits, employerpresentations and more are in-corporated into the career prepa-ration experience. Grove City fol-lows the semester calendar plan,in addition to offering two-weeksessions in January and May.

Most of the 2,500 studentslive in separate men’s andwomen’s dormitories. The restare local commuters or marriedstudents. A full program of cul-tural, professional, athletic andsocial activities is offered, includ-ing 19 intercollegiate varsity ath-letic teams.

Grove City, a town of 8,100people, is located 60 miles northof Pittsburgh. It is located nearInterstates 79 and 80 and has amunicipal airport.
