THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Let us pray.

Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right,

that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to

your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy

Spirt, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LESSONS Congregation seated

Psalm 130 (spoken responsively by whole verse) De profundis

1 Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord;

Lord, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.

2 If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand?

3 For there is forgiveness with you; therefore you shall be feared.

4 I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope.

5 My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.

6 O Israel, wait for the Lord,

for with the Lord there is mercy;

7 With him there is plenteous redemption, and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

The First Lesson Ephesians 4:25-5:2

25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

The Gospel John 6:35, 41-51

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the

Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON The Rev. Dr. R. Leigh Spruill

THE NICENE CREED standing BCP 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

. 7 .

Page 8: 08082021 Pentecost 11 Proper 14 -Church 9 & 11 R2

. S J D . O R G .

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Form III BCP 387

Celebrant: Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church and the world.

The congregation kneels

Leader: Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church: People: That we all may be one.

Leader: Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; People: That your Name may be glorified by all people.

Leader: We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; People: That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

Leader: We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; People: That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

Leader: Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; People: That our works may find favor in your sight.

Leader: Have compassion on Nancy, Fred, Virginia, Sally, Shelli, Bob, Junior, Steve, George, Leo, Robert, Gail, Andy, Joe, Richard, and all those who suffer from any grief or trouble;

People: That they may be delivered from their distress.

Leader: Give to the departed, especially Khleber Attwell, eternal rest; People: Let light perpetual shine upon them.

Leader: We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; People: May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Leader: Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

The people may add their own petitions.

The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect

THE CONFESSION OF SIN BCP 360

Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE PEACE standing BCP 360

Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer A BCP 361

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

For you are the source of light and life, you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the

Congregation kneeling

Celebrant: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Celebrant: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of

praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you

these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your

Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that

we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and

peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal

kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

Celebrant: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All baptized Christians are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Please be guided by the

ushers to the communion rail. You are invited to intinct [dip] your wafer into the intinction cup. If you would

like to receive a blessing instead of Communion, please come to the rail and cross your arms over your chest.

Everyone is welcome to receive a blessing. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request at the altar rail.

TODAY’S MUSICAL OFFERINGKeep in touch with SJD Music at our blog:

sjdmusic.wordpress.com.

In the year of 1840, at the age of 31, Felix Mendelssohn was commissioned to compose

a work for a grand celebration commemorating the invention of the printing press by

Gutenberg. This celebration also included Weber’s Jubel Overture and Handel’s Dettingen Te

Deum. Mendelssohn’s contribution was his Symphony No. 2, and he called it a symphony-

cantata for orchestra and chorus bearing the title Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise or Song of

Praise). The cantata is the final movement of this grand work, and this morning at the

Offertory, we hear one of the choruses, “I Waited for the Lord,” featuring two soli sopranos.

During these several weeks of mid-summer, we feature select talent of our many talented

singers at the Offertory, along with a partial ensemble to help lead our music in worship

while the full choir is on summer break. If you would like to help lead the sung portions of

the service during this time as part of a Summer Choir, please contact Sharlu Melville in the

Music and Worship Office [email protected]. We would love to have you.
