Nonprofits face October deadline to retain tax-exempt statusBy Patrick SweetStaff Writer
George Tomasak wasshocked tohear that the orga-nization he presides over, theLuzerne County Chapter ofthe InternationalAssociation
of Firefighters, is at risk oflosingits tax-exemptstatus.The firefighters union is
one of more than 400 non-profits on theInternal Reve-nue Services list of organi-zations that havefailed to fileappropriate paperwork forthreeconsecutive years.
Oh wow, Tomasak said.I had no idea. Ill have tolook into that.
Up until 2007, though, themajority of organizations, including the union, werenotrequired to file a form990
the IRS form that previ-ously only applied to non-
profits with more than$25,000 in gross receipts.
In 2006, Congress passed
the Pension Protection Act
which established the filing
requirement and permitsthe
IRS to automatically revoke
the tax-exempt status of the
smaller organizations.Like the IAFF, though,
manyof the small nonprofits
were unaware that they are
at risk. The IRS recognizes
that andis giving theat-risk
organizations until October
15 to submitthe filing.
We believe its important
to give these organizations
an opportunity to preserve
their valuable tax exemp-
tion, IRS commissioner
Doug Shulman said during aJuly 26 conference call tran-
scribed on the services web-
site.
The organizations listedon theIRSs website includemany veterans associations, gun clubs and charity andaid groups.
Many of the groups, suchas the Wilkes-Barre Down-town Committee, are defunct
organizations. The HistoricPreservation Society ofLuzerne County whichh a s n o r e la t io n t o t h eLuzerne County HistoricalSociety also made the list
though it has not been oper-ating since the1990s.
Evenmore surprising, Lit-tleLeague BaseballInc. madethe list. This league, though, was the one established inthe 1950s and holds no rela-tion to the Williamsport-
based organization holdingthe Little League WorldSeries in a few weeks. IRS
tax filings proving the mod-ern-day league is up-to-dateon its paperwork are avail-able at www.guidestar.org a website that publishes 990filings and other nonprofitinformation.
The IRS is encouraging
small nonprofits to checktheirtax-exemptstatusesandvisit its website, www.irs.gov,
for more information. Its really important for
small charities to pay atten-tion to this announcement,Shulman said.Thesegroupsdo great work in communi-ties acrossthe UnitedStatesandare vital to the vibrancy
of our nation.
