The meaning of the thousand holy names given in this book, is based on the glorius commentary,“Bhagavad Guna Darpana” of Sri Parashara Bhatta. Our sincere thanks to Manalur Veeravalli Sri U VeRamanujachariar Swamy, Gnyana Bhakti Bhushana Sri U Ve Satyamurthy Iyengar Swamy, Dr Sri U VeV V Ramanujam Swamy, whose books on Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama were of immense help in compiling thiswork. We also thank Smt. 1. ViœvaÚ - Lord Visnu who is complete with auspicious attributes.

2. ViÈõuÍ - He, who penetrates and enters one and all as the ‘Omni present’.

3. VaÈaÇkÀraÍ - He, who controls and directs as per His wishes, and keeps under Hiscontrol.

4. BhÂta-bhavya-bhavat-prabhuÍ - The Lord of all past, present and future beings.

5. BhÂtakÃt - The Creator, by mere resolve, of all beings .

He is all the universe, its creator and destroyer

6. BhÂtabhÃt - The Supporter of all things and beings created by Him.

7. BhÀvaÍ - He, who has as His ever-dependant attributes, all that has been created byHim, like the peacock and its plumage.

8. BhÂtÀtmÀ - He is the soul in all that exists, all beings are His body.

9. BhÂtabhÀvanaÍ - Nourisher and nurturer of all His creations; hence theSupreme Master.

He is blemishless and beyond compare

10. PÂtÀtmÀ - The Purest Self ; One who is untainted by defects of the sentient and thenon-sentient, that constitute His body.

11. ParamÀtmÀ - The Supreme Soul – unlike all others who have. Him as their innersoul, He has no other superior inner soul.

He who is the desired goal of the muktas

12. MuktÀnÀm ParamÀgatiÍ - He, who is the final Goal, that is desired and reached by allthe liberated souls.

13. AvyayaÍ - He, who does not part with anyone. One who has reached Him inVaikuntam does not go back to the cycle of birth.

14. PuruÈaÍ - One who joyously bestows on His liberated souls the perennial enjoymentof His qualities and Himself; Donor par excellence.

15. SÀkÈÁ - One who witnesses with Supreme delight His liberated souls enjoying theEternal Bliss He has bestowed on them.

16. KȼtrajðaÍ - The knower of the Eternal land where the released souls enjoy Him.

17. AkÈaraÍ - One whose attributes never diminish over time, despite beingenjoyed by the liberated souls in His celestial abode.

The highway to liberation

18. YogaÍ - He, who is also the means (upÀya) to the Goal.

19. Yoga-vidÀm netÀ - One who leads those who practice bhakti yoga, a different means,also to salvation.

20. PradhÀnapuruÈa ±œvaraÍ - Supreme Master of the primordial matter and the jivasbound in it.

I am in everything but I am higher than them

21. NÀrasimhavapuÍ - He, who incarnated as the unique half man half lion.

22. ŒrÁmÀn - One with the lustrous man and lion forms beautifully combined.

23. KeœavaÍ - One with lovely locks of hair and mane.

24. PuruÈottamaÍ - The Supreme amongst the individual souls categorized as bound,liberated and ever-free.

25. SarvaÍ - Sustainer, who is ‘all-in-all’.

26. ŒarvaÍ - Remover of evils of all that are His body.

27. ŒivaÍ - He, who is auspicious and bestows auspiciousness on all.

28. SthÀõuÍ - One who is steadfast in blessing everlasting benefits to His devotees.

29. BhÂtÀdiÍ - He, who is eagerly resorted to by all as the Supreme goal.

30. NidhiravyayaÍ - One who is the inexhaustible treasure.

31. SambhavaÍ - He, who is hidden like treasure and manifests Himself at the appropriatetime to His devotees.

32. BhÀvanaÍ - Savior who, during His manifestations, rejuvenates all by dispelling theirobstacles.

33. BhartÀ - Supporter, who nourishes His devotees by giving them His very self.

34. PrabhavaÍ - One whose birth is exalted and of sublime nature that mere contemplationof Him destroys all sins.

35. PrabhuÍ - The All-powerful who even during a fellow-human incarnate, grantedsalvation, to His foe ŒiœupÀla and His devout gopi Chintayanti.

36. ±œvaraÍ - The Supreme ruler who controls all even if He takes an ordinary and simpleform.

37. SvayambhÂÍ - He who manifests Himself by His own free Will and Grace, and not asthe result of actions.

38. œambhuÍ - One who pleases His devotees with his Auspicious attributesand Ever appealing form.

39. °dityaÍ - Resplendant Lord who resides in the interior of the Sun, lustrous like moltengold.

40. PuÈkarÀkÈaÍ - The Lotus-eyed, this being His sole identity as Sovereign Lord of theentire Universe.

41. MahÀsvanaÍ - He, who is of sacred sound, praised by the V¼das.

42. AnÀdinidhanaÍ - He who is Ever-young, one without beginning or end.

43. DhÀtÀ - The Creator who created Brahma for furtherance of creation.

44. VidhÀtÀ - He who nurtured and produced Brahma first.

45. DhÀturuttamaÍ - One who is far superior to Brahma.

46. AprameyaÍ - One who cannot be defined, explained, measured by the senses; evento the Gods.

47. HÃÈÁkeœaÍ - The controller of the sense-organs of one and all, Supreme blend ofHappiness, Prosperity and Plenty.

48. PadmanÀbha - He who in His navel the lotus that is the birthplace of Brahma.

49. Amaraprabhuh - The powerful Lord of the gods to whom He delegates their dutiesof creation and destruction.

50. ViœvakarmÀ - The Originator of all actions before and after creation ofBrahma.

51. ManuÍ - He, who wills; The Great Thinker who created this Universe with just asmall part of His conscience.

52. TvaÈÇÀ - The Chiseller who carves out the different forms and names of all beings inthis universe.

53. SthaviÈÇhaÍ - He, who expands during creation the sentient and non-sentient, thatare His body and were atomic during deluge, into the beings created by Him.

54. SthaviraÍ - He, who is Ever existent; Always consistent and constant.

55. DhruvaÍ - He, who is Invincible, uses His form to create, but who’s innate naturedoes not change.

56. AgrÀhyah - One who is beyond the realisation of all; who cannot be enticed byintelligence.

57. ŒÀœvataÍ - Tireless in His actions of creation, protection and destruction, He is Eternal.

58. KÃÈõaÍ - He, who is always in a state of Bliss, indulging in His three roles as play.

59. LohitÀkÈaÍ - One with eyes red like the beautiful lotus in fresh bloom, caused bythese activities.

60. PratardanaÍ - The Destroyer who consumes and consolidates withinHimself the entire universe during the deluge.

61. PrabhÂtaÍ - He, who is affluent, enriched with the eternal Bliss of His Abode, evenwhen all the worlds disappear during the deluge.

62. TrikakuddhÀma - The Radiant One who has ŒrÁ VaikunÇam, thrice bigger than thetransitory temporary world as His permanent Abode, .

63. Pavitram - He, who is Purity incarnate without flaws.

64. Maôgalam param - One who is the Embodiment of Supreme Auspiciousness,diametrically opposite to all that is of a blemish.

He is greater than the bhaktas and the muktas

65. ±œÀnaÍ - The universal Supreme Ruler.

66. PrÀõadaÍ - The life-giver; Giver of strength to the ever-free, souls to experience Hisglory and serve Him.

67. PrÀõaÍ - He who is Life, is dear like Life to the ever-free souls whose minds arerivetted in Him.

68. JyeÈÇaÍ - One who is the First and foremost; and hence the oldest.

69. ŒreÈÇaÍ - He, who is praised by the ever-free souls.

70. PrajÀpatiÍ - Lord of the ever-free souls in vaikuntam, who are superior tothe bound souls; He willingly accepts their service.

71. HiraõyagarbhaÍ - He, who lives in a sublime Eternal Abode that is pure and lustrouslike gold.

72. BhÂgarbhaÍ - Protector of His divine spouse BhÂma Devi (Earth) like a child in awomb; rescuing Her from under the seas as VarÀha incarnate.

73. MÀdhavaÍ - He, who is inseparable from His consort Lakshmi.

74. MadhusÂdhanÍ - The slayer of the demon Madhu ; Destroyer of all evil forces.

75. ±œvaraÍ - The Absolute Ruler whose Will is true and beyond impediments.

76. VikramÁ - He, who is most Powerful and capable of clearing all opposition.

77. DhanvÁ - The Unparalleled wielder of the bow’ ŒÀrôga’, befitting His unsurpassedvalor.

78. MedhÀvÁ - One who has the most powerful knowledge; The Omniscient, befittingHis Glory.

79. VikramaÍ - He, who has Garuda, personification of the Vedas, as His exclusive mount,to move about at His Will and pleasure.

80. KramaÍ - One who is highly prosperous in Paramapada, His Celestial Abode, TheAll-pervading God.

81. AnuttamaÍ - He, who is unsurpassed.

82. DurÀdharÈaÍ - Unfathomable like the ocean, Lord of the Universe, cannot beinfluenced, disturbed or conquered.

83. KÃtajðaÍ - He, who is grateful to His devotees however meager their worship.

84. KÃtiÍ - One who kindles the virtuous acts of His devotees.

85. °tmavÀn - The Supreme Master, who possesses the souls who perform Dharma aswealth.

86. Sur¼œaÍ - The Lord of all the gods including Brahma.

He is the means and the end; He is the medicine and the feast

87. ŒaraõaÚ - The means for one and all to attain Him.

88. Œarma - One who is Bliss and a sweet goal.

89. ViœvaretÀÍ - One who is the seed, root cause and usherer of the Universe; He createsthe senses for His service alone.

90. PrajÀbhavaÍ - The Abode of all living beings; The final Goal to be reached using thelimbs and senses given by Him.

91. AhaÍ - One who never forsakes anyone; who is like the Day that awakens peoplefrom ignorance.

92. SamvatsaraÍ - He,who lives in the heart of His devotees to lend them Hishelping hand; Giver of intellect for them to reach His shore.

93. VyÀlaÍ - One who assures and accepts His devotees by sending His representativesto them.

94. PratyayaÍ - One who provides confidence to His devotees to whom He is Ever-reliable.

95. Sarva darœanaÍ - He, who displays Himself with all His Glory to His devotees.

96. AjaÍ - He who removes all obstacles in the path to reach Him for His devotees.

97. Sarv¼œvaraÍ - One who reaches all who surrender to Him without analyzing theirqualification.

98. SiddaÍ - He, who is Himself an established, independant means to reach Him.

99. SiddhiÍ - He, who is the result of all virtues performed.

100. SarvÀdiÍ - The Supreme Source for granting to His devotees, bounties high and lowas sought by them.

101. AcyutaÍ - He, who never separates Himself from His devotees who surrender toHim.

102. VÃÈÀkapiÍ - He who manifested as the VarÀha incarnate, a personificationof virtues.

103. AmeyÀtmÀ - He, whose Grace (what He bestows) to His devotees is beyond measure.

104. Sarvayoga vinissÃtaÍ - One who is attained by all means.

105. VasuÍ - One who dwells in the hearts of His devotees, even if their love for Him is amere fragment.

106. VasumanÀÍ - He, who cherishes His devotees as a valuable treasure.

107. SatyaÍ - One who is well disposed to fulfill all the wishes of His devotees.

108. SamÀtmÀ - The Impartial one, whose treats all His devotees without discrimination.

109. SammitaÍ - He, who is subservient to His devotees.

110. SamaÍ - One who treats all His devotees equally; who is of uniform disposition, notdifferentiating them as old or new.

111. AmoghaÍ - One with whom contact is never futile; bhakti is never fruitless.

112. PuõçarÁkÀkÈaÍ - One who is like the eye to the residents of pundarika (Œri Vaikuntam).

113. VÃÈakarmÀ - One who’s righteous actions induce us in the right path.

114. VÃÈÀkÃtiÍ - One who is an embodiment of dharma; cool and refreshing like elixir.

115. RudraÍ - One who moves His devotees to tears (of joy) ending their misery.

116. BahuœirÀÍ - He, who is multi-headed like Adisesha.

117. BabhruÍ - The Supporter, in His form as Adisesha, bears the entire world.

118. ViœvayoniÍ - One who embraces His devotees to Himself.

119. œuciœravÀÍ - He, who listens to the pure words of His devotees in the form of theirprayers.

120. AmÃtaÍ - The Bestower of liberation, who is inexhaustively sweet to His devoteeswho are never satiated seeing Him.

121. ŒÀœvataÍsthÀõuÍ - He, who is Eternal and steadfast, unlike the elixir of the Godswhich can be tasted only once.

122. VarÀrohaÍ - One who is the most supreme object of attainment.

Six Qualities

123. MahÀtapÀÍ - One who possesses Infinite knowledge.

124. SarvagaÍ - He, who has the supreme strength to conslidate in Him, all that has beenretracted during deluge.

125. Sarvavit - The All-Bountiful; He who obtains all back again, through re-creation afterthe deluge.

126. BhÀnuÍ - He, who is unchanged even during this creation.

127. ViœvaksenaÍ - One who has the power to hold an army for the protectionof the universe.

128. JanÀrdanaÍ - The Splendorous one who destroys the wicked without external aid.

The threefold duties of the three

129. VedaÍ - One who grants the vedas.

130. Vedavit - He, who fully and correctly comprehends the V¼das.

131. AvyaôgaÍ - He who knows completely the six limbs of the Vedas - phonetics, grammar,metrics, lexicon, astronomy/astrology and manual of rituals.

132. VedÀôgaÍ - One who has the V¼das as His body.

133. Vedavit - One who is realised throught he vedas; One who makes people practicethe rites in the V¼das and and hence attain Him.

134. KaviÍ - One who assimilates everything beyond ordinary perception with exceptionalfore-sight.

135. L½kÀdhyakÈaÍ - Lord Superintendent, who closely observes the subjects in the worldwho are eligible to practice Dharma.

136. SurÀdhyakÈaÍ - He who perceives the gods who are appeased by the participants ofDharma.

137. DharmdhyakÈaÍ - Master of dharma, One who knows its fruit and grantsit.

138. KÃtÀkÃtaÍ - The Granter of fruits of this world as well as that of the Eternal world.

The four qualities of the four

139. CaturÀtmÀ - One whose Self has a four-fold manifestation as VÀsud¼va, SaÚkaÃÈaõa,Pradyumna and Aniruddha.

140. CaturvyÂhaÍ - One who is in the four mental stages of development of the worshipper– state of being awake, dream, deep sleep and complete realisation.

141. CaturdamÈÇraÍ - One who, as ParavÀsud¼va, has four canine teeth (identity of theSupreme soul).

142. ChaturbhujaÍ - One with four arms in the transcendental form of ParavÀsud¼va.

143. BhrÀjiÈõuÍ - The Ever Resplendent, Radiant one to those who worship Him.

144. Bhojanam - One who is the object of enjoyment to His devotees, like food that is asappetizing as ambrosia.

145. BhoktÀ - The Enjoyer, who rejoices the offerings made by His devotees out of pureLove.

146. SahiÈõuÍ - One who forgives readily the sins committed knowingly and unknowinglyby His devotees.

Sri Mahavishnu (the first avatar)

147. JagadÀdijaÍ - He, who is the first born of the Trinity, as MahÀ ViÈõu.

148. AnaghaÍ - The Sinless, untainted one even if born in this earthly world.

149. VijayaÍ - He, who is Victory Incarnate, and makes Brahma and Rudra victorious intheir duties of creation and destruction.

150. JetÀ - The Conqueror who makes Brahma and Rudra carry out the duties ordained byHim.

151. ViœvayoniÍ - The Cause of the Universe in its emergence, sustenance and dissolution.

152. PunarvasuÍ - One who lives as the Inner soul of Brahma, Rudra and all other gods.

Sri Vamana Avatar

153. UpendraÍ - One who appeared as the last of the °dityas, as Aditi’s twelth son; theyounger brother of Indra.

154. VÀmanaÍ - The Dwarf Incarnate who bestows happiness to those who worship Him.

155. PrÀmœuÍ - One who immediately grew tall and, as Trivikrama, measured the worldwith His feet.

156. AmoghaÍ - One whose acts are never fruitless; He extended His sublime Grace toBali and IndrÀ at the same time, without discrimination.

157. œuchiÍ - The Purest one who does not expect anything in return for allthat He does and gives.

158. ²rjitaÍ - One with the power to subdue Mahabali’s son, Marici.

159. AtÁndraÍ - One who is superior to Indra even though younger than him.

160. SaÚgrahaÍ - He, who is easily comprehended by genuine devotees.

161. SargaÍ - He, who grew as huge as Trivikrama to make His lotus feet accessible to Hisdevotees.

162. DhÃtÀtmÀ - One who is a balm to all the souls by giving Himself to support them.

163. NiyamaÍ - He, who subdues the enemies of His devotees.

164. YamaÍ - Remover of obstacles to His devotees; The Inner Controller.

The manifest protector, the Lord of surpassing beauty and sweetness

165. VedyaÍ - He, who can be realized by everyone’s senses due to His simplemanifestations.

166. VaidyaÍ - One who knows the art of releaving His devotees of birth.

167. SadÀ yogÁ - One who is always awake to protect His devotees.

168. VÁrahÀ - The slayer of strong men of wicked nature who try to hinder devotees, byevil and false arguments, from reaching Him.

169. MÀdhavaÍ - The Proclaimer of the true knowledge of Himself as theSupreme Being.

170. MadhuÍ - One who is like honey to His true devotees.

The general auspicious qualities

171. AtÁndriyaÍ - He, who is beyond comprehension by the sense organs which are ourmeans of comprehension.

172. MahÀmÀyaÍ - One who conceals (envelops) Himself in MÀyÀ, the blinding screen,from those who are not devoted to Him.

173. MahotsÀhaÍ - He, who is of great enthusiasm.

174. MahÀbalaÍ - The Omnipotent; one with Immense power, without need for externalassistance.

175. MahÀbuddhiÍ - He, of infinite knowledge who comprehends all things, at all places,at all times, at once.

176. MahavÁryaÍ - One without change.

177. MahÀ œaktiÍ - One with utmost Power to mould prakÃti which is part of His ownbody to create the world, like the spider that secretes it’s web and finally consumes itagain.

178. MahÀ dyuthiÍ - The Ever Splendorous one, luminous to the extent thatthe sun’s radiance is small in comparison.

179. AnirdeœyavapuÍ - He, who possesses a Super Form of incomparable Excellence thatdefies description.

180. ŒrÁmÀn - The most Beautiful one, adorned with an array of jewels of rare Excellence,worthy of His divine body.

181. AmeyÀtmÀ - He, who is the Supreme Majesty, unfathomable like the deep ocean.

The actions that match the avatar

182. MahÀdridhÃt - The bearer of the great mountain Mandara during the epoch-makingchurning of the milk-ocean.

183. MaheÈvÀsaÍ - The wielder of the mighty bow SÀrangÀ; The dexterous Discharger ofgreat arrows

184. MahÁbhartÀ - The bearer of the earth with ease.

185. ŒrÁnivÀsaÍ - He, who bears in His chest Sri Mahalakshmi, who emerged from themilk-ocean.

186. SatÀÚ gatiÍ - The Ultimate Goal for all spiritual seekers; The Refuge of the pious.

187. AniruddaÍ - The Irresistible one; Charismatic and Ever charming.

188. SurÀnandaÍ - One who delights the Devas by dispelling their distress.

189. GovindaÍ - The Benefactor; Recipient of praise from the devas.

190. GovidÀmpatiÍ - The Lord of those who know the V¼das.

191. MarÁciÍ - Ray of Light who shows His impeccable form to even those who are blindfrom birth.

192. DamanaÍ - He, who is the Dispeller of the sufferings of worldly life with His radiance.

193. HamsaÍ - He, the Incarnate of the pure Swan.

194. SupraõaÍ - One possessing charming feathered wings, that can lead all souls to theother shore across the ocean of samsÀra.

Padmanabha avatar (the one with the navel / lotus)

195. BhujagottamaÍ - The Supreme master, who reclines on the couch, which is the bodyof serpent AdiœeÈa, in limitless splendor.

196. HiraõyanÀbhaÍ - One who has a beautiful navel with a golden hue.

197. SutapÀÍ - One who is aware of all that He has absorbed within Him.

198. PadmanÀbhaÍ - One who has an eight-petalled lotus emerging from His navel.

Sri Narasimha Avatar (man-lion manifestation)

200. AmÃtyuÍ - He, who is the foe of ‘god of death’ ; an enemy to Hiranya, who iscomparable to death.

201. SarvadÃk - The Impartial Judge, who sees friend, foe and arbitrator as equal.

202. SimhaÍ - He, who has the form of man-lion, Narasimha.

203. SandhÀtÀ - One who even while He killing Hiraõya, embraced PrahlÀdÀ.
