Its not the first time Andy McKenna has rescued a stray dog, but it is the first time someone on the other side of the world helped find its owner.Andy, a Wakefield delivery driver, was doing his job on Sunday morning when he came across a stray dog on Bisley Ave in Nelson. He picked it up and, because the SPCA was closed on a Sunday, took to Facebook to find its owner. He posted a photo of the schnauzer, named Katie, and soon enough, a tour-ist in the UK had seen the photo and contacted the owner in Nelson to help reunite the two.Andy says when he first saw the dog, it was just sit-ting on the side of the road.I was going up Bisley Ave and there was a dog stand-ing on the side of the road.

I called it over because I didnt want it to get run over. It obviously didnt have any road-sense and I couldnt see any tags or col-lars on it.Andy put the dog in his car and she lay on the back seat while Andy finished his pa-per run.About 15 minutes after the photo of the dog was posted, its owner Louise Hogg received a phone call from Sophie Gray, a friend who is travelling in the UK.

Wakefield couple Wendy and Peter Herrick have a lot in common, including both being bank managers, presi-dents of Rotary groups and keen gardeners. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

You wont win any prizes for guess-ing the main topics of conversation at the Herrick household.Thats because Wakefield couple Pe-ter and Wendy Herrick now have more in common than ever after they were elected as Mr and Mrs President of their respective rotary clubs late last month. Peter started his second term as president of the Rotary Club of Motueka on June 22 while at the same changeover ceremony Wendy was inducted as just the second women president of Richmond Rotary. Its the same for both of us, Peter says. We joined Rotary because its a

community service organisation and its a really good way of helping the community, both locally and inter-nationally.Peter, who joined Rotary when they were living in Motueka seven years ago, was previously president from 2011 to 2012. Wendy joined Rich-mond Rotary in 2011 after they had moved to Wakefield and is serving her first term as president. And when Peter and Wendy arent discussing Rotary business, chances

are they will be talking about bank-ing or gardening. Peter is manager of the Richmond branch of ANZ and Wendy is the manager of Westpac in Richmond while they also share the same favourite past-time, relaxing in their big formal garden at home. We have a one acre, formal garden which is a good way to unwind es-pecially if you have a power tool in your hand, Peter says.Peter says that although Rotary is a big commitment and can take a bit of time it is worthwhile because Ro-tary makes such a big contribution

  • Burger Kings Richmond site and building is up for sale al-though the fast-food franchise wont be going anywhere with its lease not expiring until 2020.The Burger King outlet was built on the 1204 square metre site at 1 Salisbury Rd in 2008. It was originally owned by a Nelson-based syndicate and was sold to Australian-based investors Ashok and Geeta Guppa in 2011. Now the Guppas have signed-up Harcourts Nelson to ten-der the property which has a Government Valuation of $1.87million so that they can reinvest elsewhere. The ten-der closes on August 5.Ashok used to be based in New Zealand but now that hes

moved to Australia, he wants to sell the property so he can reinvest elsewhere, Harcourts Krystal Rooney says. We have had quite a lot of interest already - its quite a unique site and its been quite popular.

Krystal says Burger Kings lease expires in 2020 but it has two rights of renewal for four years that would take it out to 2028. Burger King owns the chattels for the building that has a cur-rent rental of $139,500 a year plus GST and out goings.

Yes, because theres only one of them. Referees get so much grief, and its not fair that peo-ple on the sideline can yell abuse freely.

    Shona Jones, Richmond.

Not really, because the kids have still got to have their sport. Ive been to sports and seen it happen but its the kids day.

    Logan Stewart, Saxton.

Probably could have gone on to referee it but done some-thing about it like taken other actions to prevent the parents from ruining it for the kids.

    Dal Stewart, Wakefield.

Probably not because it prob-ably didnt achieve much.

Referees decided to pull out of refereeing first division football on Saturday after one was the victim of abuse on social media. Do you think it was a good idea?

to the community. The emails are as bad at home as they are at work sometimes but its worthwhile. We raised money for Vanuatu and $15,000 Rotarys medical assistance scheme for children in the Pacific Islands. Rotary just built some new shelters at Rabbit Island and we did

a lot of work building the cycleway. We also provide a lot of funding for youth even though a lot of Rotarys members are oldies. Peter says there are five Rotary clubs in the Nelson-Tasman region and they are always looking for new members. Anyone interested in joining a Rotary club can go to the website rotary.org.nz

The final piece of the puzzle in the Saxton Field development is being put into place with construction starting on a new sports ground that will include the regions first dedicated rugby league field. Contractors have already started removing top soil from the five hectare site, located between Avery Field and Saxton Oval, so that the drainage system can be installed. The former Daelyn Orchard site is the final piece of land within the greater Saxton Field complex to be developed and, when completed, will feature open playing fields including a home ground for the Richmond Rabbits Rugby League Club.Weve spoken to the Richmond Rabbits about it and they are very excited, Tasman District Council reserves officer Glen Thorn says. We have developed other council grounds for other clubs like Jubilee Park for the rugby and cricket, so its nothing new.Glen says the TDC-owned land is being developed as a part of a joint project with the Nelson City Council. Because the site is adjacent to the Saxton Velodrome, which is presently

being constructed, and Avery Field, a shared toilet block will also be part of the development. There will be an ablution facility that will service Saxton Velodrome, Avery Field and the new sports ground, although the velodrome will eventually get its own facility. There could also be shared clubrooms for the three sports - that makes more sense than having three separate clubrooms that arent fully utilised.Glen says the construction of a new ablution block will be a relief for football teams and their supporters at Avery Field. Theyve been using Porta-Loos there and some of them got burned down, so this will be good news for them.Glenn says the sports grounds

will be sown with grass in late August and open for use in time for next winters sports. The league ground will have relocatable floodlights for night-time training in winter that can be removed in summer. The ponded area to the north of the ground and vacant area to the west will be landscaped to create a family recreation area and attractive entranceway. The entrance to the new ground will run between the new entrance to Saxton Field off Main Rd Stoke and Champion Rd. Its going to transform the whole area from a wasteland of weeds that people were using for fly-dumping into a really nice sports ground. Its going to look amazing.

Snow dump creates perfect opening day at RainbowHundreds took to the snow over the weekend as Rainbow Ski Area held its opening weekend celebrations. Saturday was jam-packed with snowball fights, tours, tobogganing, sledding and live music en-tertaining a crowd of hundreds, and while Sun-day was quieter, there were still plenty of people on the slopes for some wintery fun. Rainbow Ski Area manager Jono Hay says the weekend ran without a hitch. Weve had an excellent opening weekend with

fresh snowfall on Friday morning. It set us up really well along with our man-made snow, he says. The ski field operates a full snow school with group and private lessons, as well as a school holiday programme. Jono says its very important that all vehicles coming up carry chains because they have had to turn people away who have been unprepared. Rainbow offer a shuttle service for those unable to make it up in their own vehicle.

House prices have risen only slightly as real estate agents report huge demand for homes in Nelson and Tasman.Mark Rumsey of First National says theyve seen huge growth over the past 12 months, with his firm selling three times as many homes in the past fort-night, compared to what they did last year. What were seeing is unpresented demand, especially in the $280,000-$440,000 price range, he says. The QV House Price Index for June shows Nelson residential property values rose by 0.7 per cent over the past three

months and the average home value in the city is now $413,239.Nelson home values have increased 3.2 per cent year on year and they are now 7.9 per cent higher than the previous peak of 2007. Residen-tial property values in the Tasman Dis-trict decreased by one per cent over the past three months and the average value across the region is now $415,394.However, Tasman District home values rose 1.2 per cent year on year and they are now 3.4 per cent higher than the pre-vious peak of 2007.

QV Nelson Registered Valuer Richard Kolff says sales numbers and listings continue to fall around the region which is quite normal for this time of year as we hit the middle of winter.Recent decreases in the Official Cash Rate and floating interest rates by some banks, coupled with an outlook of con-tinued low interest rates, is also helping to fuel demand for homes in the low to medium level price brackets, he says.Mark expects prices to rise sharply this spring. An increase in demand usu-ally brings an increase in price and we havent seen that yet. As we come into spring I think well see multiple offers drive prices up.

House prices drop, demand still high

Tahunanui man faces meth charges: Police executed an early morning search warrant at a Tahunanui address on Thursday, resulting in charges being made towards a 27 year old Nel-son man. The man has been charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of instru-ments for the commission of an offence against the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Government boosts Great Taste Trail: Tasman Great Taste trail will receive $67,500 as one of six new projects the Government is investing in to maintain the quality of the New Zealand Cycle Trail. Nelson MP Nick Smith says hes pleased the lo-cal cycle trail has been selected, as it is an asset to our community and in need of repair follow-ing storm damage. I regularly use the Great Taste trail for recrea-tion, fitness and family time, and rate it as one if the best cycle trails in country. My favourite section is from Richmond to Mapua through Rabbit Island and the unique ferry service across the Waimea Estuary, he says. Funding for our regional Cycle Trail is in ad-dition to the $3m announced last week for the Nelson Coastal Route. Cycle Trails attract tourists, create jobs, and boost economic growth in the regions. Reports on Cycle Trails indicate more than 1200 jobs have been created.

Man dead after assault: A man involved in a serious assault at Franklyn Village on Saturday morning has died after being attacked by a 17 and 27 year old resident of the complex. Bruce Andrew Mortimer, 46, was transferred from Nelson Hospital to Wellington Hospital on Saturday in a critical condition with a head injuries, after being attacked. The two men have been charged with assault with intent to injure. Police said further charges are likely. The complex houses about 180 people and has around 60 security cameras installed. Franklyn Village owner Liz Harris told the New Zealand Herald, accommodation staff and resi-dents were devastated by Mr Mortimers death. This is a dreadful thing to happen for our com-munity. Forensic scientists are helping with a scene ex-amination, along with around 20 police staff.

  • Waimea grower Canaan Balck has risen above the rest of the field to win the Nelson Young Fruit Grower of the Year.Six of the best young fruit growers in the Nelson region battled it out against each other in an intense day-long event at Hoddys Orchard in Hope last Friday.A series of challenges tested a range of skills needed to oper-ate a successful fruit-growing business. Contestants had to calibrate spraying equipment, graft a tree, identify irrigation parts, grade a box of apples, an-alyse a spread sheet from an or-chard block as well as sit quad bike safety, human resources and first aid tests. Canaan, 24, who is a block manager at Hoddys Orchard, won the $1500 cash prize, which was announced at the awards dinner at the Headingly Centre in Richmond.Canaan also won a one-day media and presentation course in Auckland and an all-expens-es paid trip to Christchurch to compete at the national com-petition for the New Zealand Young Fruit Grower of the Year and Young Grower of the Year awards, run by Horticulture New Zealand, on August 12-13. He will compete against regional Young Fruit Grower

winners from Hawkes Bay, Central Otago and Bay of Plen-ty. There were some strong competitors here in Nelson so Im very pleased with how I did, Canaan says. The expe-rience was awesome and I am sure the final scores must have been close. It was hard work, and Im sure the national com-petition will present a new set of challenges and give me the chance to develop even further.

Im hoping to do my best and learn even more from the other regional competition winners.Tom Dalziel, 27, from Thomas Bros took second place and won $1000 cash, and Rowan Cox, also Thomas Bros secured third place with a prize of $500 cash. Stacey Russell from Thawley Orchards, Aaron Fin-lay from Turners and Growers, and Rowan Inwood from Hod-dys Orchard also competed.

James Bond 007? Er, not quite, though wouldnt that be good? Its actually Jeremy Irons, Real Estate Agents Authority license number 20028446, and Ive realised five months into my real estate career, second time around, that we agents can appear to have a lot in common with politicians, in that it can some-times be a little difficult to receive a straight answer. Well, this column is my candid attempt at shedding some light on the goings on behind the For Sale and Sold signs that go up and down in the region. Some recent stats released from the Real Estate Agents Authority make for interesting reading. Stats such as one in every 335 people in NZ are licensees. Thats one in every 335. Good grief! There are 61 li-censees for every property sale. The average age of agents is 58 with the oldest male licensee being 90 years of age. Good for him I say.And the oldest female? A mere 86. My best wishes to her also. This means that at any given time there are way more agents than there are

properties being sold. Not exactly a promising premise for those start-ing out. So why on earth would anyone want to get into real estate? Im hoping that over the course of the coming few months via this col-umn, we may discover the answer together. My next question is, when is a col-umn not a column? Well in this case, it is when you pay the paper to print it, rather than them pay-ing you! A bit like an ad I hear you say? Yes very much like an ad, but Ill say (cough, cough) column and Im hoping itll be a regular (cough, cough) column. So, five months in, and with four listings and three sales under my belt working for the excellent folk at Green Door Real Estate, I find myself with one remaining listing. Cheers for now, Jeremy

Ron Peterson, Ken Blockley and Tony Greep were among those help-ing out for Love in Action at Futures Preschool in Richmond on Sat-urday. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Local churches united last Sat-urday in an effort to help out around the community through a programme called Love in Ac-tion. Over 80 volunteers from seven Richmond and Hope churches took part in a number of projects from gardening at local schools and private residences to cook-ins with all the food going to St Vincent de Paul for distribution.Futures Early Education were thrilled to be one of the benefac-tors of Love in Action. After being approached by or-

ganisers, head teacher Jo Row-land drew up a proposal of what the pre-school wanted and needed done and last Saturday saw it all come together. Thanks to Love in Action, Fu-tures now has a brand new mud kitchen, created from Jos own design, a digging patch, freshly laid sand and new garden beds, plus other general maintenance including trimmed trees thanks to Mark Shepherd from Treehab. The working bee provided us with the skills and support to make our ideas a reality, says Jo.

We are so thankful to the Love in Action group and everyone who made it happen and for their love, action and dedication to enhance the garden. Their work has made it a wonderful learning space for the children, families and educators and the process as a whole has strength-ened our connections with the wider community, which is a win for everyone.Love in action was a pilot pro-gramme and with the success of its first trial, organisers hope to repeat it at least once a year.

Richmond School, Wednesday, June 24: Rich-mond School is feeling proud after four suc-cessful shows of their production, The Kiwiana Caper. Principal Tim Brenton says the students did extremely well and gave a polished perfor-mance. The production also received a huge turnout from family and the community with both the evening performances in particular, packed out. DVDs of the schools production are now being organised and will be available from Richmond School.

The Audiophile, Wednesday, July 1: Waimea Weekly would like to apologise to our good friend Daniel OConnell from The Audiophile.Somehow we spelt his name wrong in the arti-cle Music lovers turn back to vinyl.

Football referee quits, Wednesday, July 1: Last week Waimea Weekly reported how a local football referee quit the game after he was the victim of abuse on social media. On Saturday his former colleagues hit back, refusing to offi-ciate any first division match. The action meant teams had to find their own people to referee half a game each. Referees say they will be back on the job this weekend.

The Tasman districts new recycling bin collection service has made a smooth start with the majority of householders getting things right although there still a few teething problems that need to be ironed out.The new service started on June 29 following the delivery of 17,150 new 240-litre recycling bins to homes along Tasman District Councils recycling routes. Four new hi-tech trucks have been collecting the bins as well as rubbish bags and glass recycling bins and council utilities asset engineer David Stephenson says the only real issue is people not reading the instructions.David says the timing problem has been exacerbated by a domino ef-fect on some streets where an early riser has put their bin out on the wrong day and the rest of the street has followed suit. Householders needed to check the sticker on their bin to see which day to put them out and could view the collection schedule on the council website tas-man.govt.nz One of the councillors said, in a meeting last week, that his wife told him you could tell the houses where the men put the bins out be-cause they didnt read the instruc-

tions and got the wrong day. I think hed got it wrong too.David says the only other major is-sue was the time of collection of bins from retailers on Queen St which started at 8.40am in the first week. It makes sense to start after 9am so that retailers have time to put their bins out in the morning so well ad-just that. If they have to leave them out overnight thats asking for trou-ble, he says. David says they are able to respond to any issues and inquiries quickly because they can monitor the pro-gress of the new collection service in real-time using a GPS tracking system and camera on-board the trucks. The system records the time each bin is collected and its contents and photographs any problem bins.Engineering services manager Pe-ter Thomson says the new bins will make recycling cardboard and pa-per easier and as a result they are expecting a 20 per cent increase in recycling material. David says that council processes 50 tonnes of recycled material from Tasman homes each year with 15.4 tonnes coming from Richmond. A survey of 300 Richmond homes showed that only three did not use councils recycling services.

Students get taste of boxing in RichmondAndrew Board

Its been a massive success in Victory, and Hen-ley School principal John Armstrong is hoping to replicate that boxing popularity in Rich-mond.Victory Boxing Charitable Trust was founded three years ago and now has hundreds of chil-dren and teenagers through its gym each week, as well as several popular adult classes. John is one of those that attends the adult classes and he says he wanted to give Richmond kids a taste of it too. They do such a good job in there. The structure is great and its really positive. We wanted to do something for the kids out this way as well. It gives them a bit of focus, fitness and learning team work. Its great for them.Parents Marc and Amiee Baker come to the school once a week during the lunch break and they along with John train the kids on how to throw a jab, skip, run and work on some combinations. We dont do any contact, says John. Its all fit-ness and working on technique. If they want to do sparring they can go to Victory. The programme started last school term and 12 boys took part. Next term, 14 have signed up and John says there is certainly enough demand for it.Ultimately wed like to invite kids from other schools in this area and when they progress to intermediate they can go to Victory if they like. We see ourselves as a feeder to them.Funding for the boxing gloves, bags and skip-ping ropes came from the Tasman District Councils community fund, via Victory Boxing Charitable Trust.John says each Tuesday lunchtime there are plenty of interested on-lookers at the schools hall and they are not just other students.I had staff asking me about it as well, so now we have six staff doing a fitness class once a week in the morning. Its been great for the school.

Jetstar to Nelson:Nelson is by far the busiest airport on the list and serves

around 800,000 passengers per year. The next busiest is only around 500,000. If they dont choose Nelson then there is something wrong. Adrian Ferris.

Of course they will choose Nel-son. Best place in New Zealand

    to visit. Cj Power.

Looking forward to it. Sheree Piesse.

Kindergarten hours extended:It has been wonderful for our family. Our three girls have at-

tended Nelson South Kindergarten and with the change in hours we have been able to work a little more knowing our children are in a safe, happy, learning environment. It is also a choice, with our youngest still doing three half days a week instead of full days. Robb Balloch Sandra Saywell.

I think its a good idea my daugh-ter goes to Nelson South kindy.

    Nikita Tepu-Takuira.

I think its stupid as you have some parents who start work a

lot earlier. You will soon have to make all workers around New Zealand work school hours as well. Kelly Brennan.

Referee quits after online abuse:I saw this. Absolute disgrace. Dylan Kawana-Waugh.

Disgusting! The club should be fined.

    Jade Gibbins.

Sad, as it is hard enough to get people to ref games in any code, come on peeps sort it out! Hillary Tupe.

Stoke Community Centre plans un-veiled:Shame Tahunanui Community Centre

couldnt get a slice of that pie. Have we been forgotten?

    Cushla Vass.

I just hope one sporting code doesnt claim it and it is in fact a com-munity centre. I think it will be a

wonderful benchmark for Stoke to build on. Lets hope a youth park is designed and goes ahead shortly after. Who will be managing the centre? Anyone know? Jo Munro.

Good idea, but will it leak like most kiwi buildings? Will it be cold with very little heating, (like

most kiwi buildings), will there be so few power points you cant do any-thing without extension leads etc, will the floors be level? (You know the rest). Brian Gower.

Wont leak, look at the size of the sof-fits, plus the roof has reasonable pitch. Codes state insulation and

double glazing and all that good stuff is compulsory now dont they, surely it wont be cold, just need to shut the bloody doors and windows, then crank up that big heat pump. What else do you want? Paul Jones. New mural:

Do we need reminding that public spac-es are shared by children, too? That new mural of a couple in a

mouth-clamped embrace doesnt belong in a public space. A nightclub perhaps. How much more virtual graffiti is going to be plastered over the city buildings? Add to the tacky blue stripes and silly, cold, white seats in Bridge St, and we see areas of the city beginning to look degraded. Dont Nelsonians have any say about these afflictions? Theyre not classy at all...Morag Woode.

Richmond water chlorine-free again:Yay!!! I havent been enjoying my cup-

pas with the yuck-tasting water! Verity Bartlett.

Yes at least people get the taste when too much chlorine. I am more concerned about the virtually

tasteless and odourless fluorine chemi-cals such as hydroflurosilisic acid and Fluoroacetate In our water supplies. Ray Foxley.

James Lowe star attraction:Awesome to see J-Lowe at the Waimea Old Boys club day on

Saturday. He was great with the kids, even those from other clubs. Top work James, hopefully well see you in the ABs soon! (Via text)

Perfect day for a cruiseJessie Johnston

What better way to celebrate an Ameri-can holiday than with an iconic sym-bol of American culture gas-guzzling cars. From lean, mean Corvettes and Mus-tangs, to the colossal, tail-finned Plym-ouths, there was something for eve-ryone at the Nelson Rod and Custom Clubs Independence Day Cruise, last Saturday. The cruise began at the Suburban Club in Nelson and made its way to Riwaka and back, a distance of around 100 kilo-

metres. Not only was the day a chance for on lookers to admire a display of Ameri-can automobile history, the Independ-ence Day Cruise was also in support of a very good cause. Everyone who took part in the cruise paid an entry fee of $5 and by the end of the day the event managed to raise $500, which will all be going towards prostate cancer. There were 67 participants in the cruise, 64 from Nelson and a further three that were picked up in Motueka along the way.

St Paul's School Vinnies have created a special gift for vi-sion impaired people in Nel-son, making a tactile children's story book featuring words in Braille and large print. The Vinnies, which is the youth group of the Society of St Vin-cent de Paul, were inspired to create the book after a visit from Gill Clayton and Kaye Halkett, who spoke about their experiences with sight loss. Gill and Kaye showed the Vinnies examples of tactile books and the children decided to make their own to donate to the Blind Foundation. The Vinnies transformed the children's story Whirly the Helicopter, written by Ian Pill-inger, into a tactile book featur-ing 3D illustrations with words in both Braille and large print. The Vinnies presented the

book to Gill, Kaye and Amanda Stevens, who is also vision im-paired, and Paul Richardson from the Nelson branch of the Blind Foundation, to be used by vision impaired people liv-ing in the region."I'm a blind parent with sight-ed-children and there was nothing like this around when my children were young," Gill says. "It is so important for any parent to be able to read to their children." Amanda says tactile books are also good for vision-impaired children and are a key resource for helping develop their litera-cy while Paul says the Vinnies created "one of the best tactile books I have seen in my years of working in this field".Youth Coordinator for the So-ciety of St Vincent de Paul, Philippa Winch says the Vin-

nies group took a term to make the book which was part of a two year study on disabil-ity awareness. The Vinnies also buddied up with young peo-ple with disabilities and their caregivers to go canoeing and created musical instruments for Little Stars playgroup that caters for children with disabil-ities as part of the study. "The children learned so much from this project," Phillipa says. "It's helped the students to reach out to and value all people for the unique qualities they are able to offer."Vinnie Josephine Hills says the book is "much more than something people can read". "If you are blind and a Braille reader it is much better if you can touch the pictures as well. It's something they can really enjoy."

If you have children in your family, or have been to the mall in recent days, you will certainly know that it is the school holidays! As well, quite a number of people I know are away on holidays in New Zealand or overseas. In the depth of winter holidays (or even a wishful thought about them for most of us) can bring its own refresh-ment. Earlier in the year, I enjoyed a bit of a working holiday. It was an exchange with two priests from the north of Eng-land, They came here to Richmond and I went to look after two parishes near Manchester.

The people in the north of England were very welcoming and, at that time, much look-ing forward to spring. Indeed, they were looking out for snow-drop flowers which meant that spring was on its way. Easter coincides with spring in the Northern Hemisphere and reinforces so beauti-fully the Christian message of new life. Here in the Southern Hemisphere we

perhaps have to be more resourceful in finding suitable symbols.Holidays, that refreshment of days aside from normal routines, is just one exam-ple. If we reflect on our lives, I am sure we could find other signs of hope, opti-mism, satisfaction, joy. Even if life is tough for us at the mo-ment, there is the hope of understanding and of a helping hand from kind family, friends, and even strangers. Christians see God working through such caring people ourselves included - making tangible the new life that Christian faith is all about.

    Father David Gruschow,

    Our Lady of Perpetual

    Help Parish.

    Just a thought...

A sell-out audience enjoyed the best arts and entertainment created by Garin College stu-dents during Mahi Toi at the colleges annual Showcase Concert held at the Hope Commu-nity Church last week.Garin held its Te Wairoa o nga Mahi Toi arts festival late last month when students attended a range of artistic workshops and activities as part of the festival. Last Thursday and Friday, the very best of Mahi Toi was showcased at a public concert at the Hope Community Church and principal John Boyce says it was the best he had seen in 15 years. John says the event was taken to the next level under the guidance of Garin College arts coor-dinator Lindsey Furlong-Taylor and year 13 arts captains Jess Brooks and Nick Erasmuson who had been planning the concert for months. The audience were amazed and spellbound by the varied and entertaining acts performed by the students, he says.John also praised music teacher Kyle Profitt who worked with his team of technical minded students to present such a near to perfect show.A highlight of the concert was the Recyclable and Wearable art (RAW) competition with Ahusaka made by Caitlan Mahon, who mod-eled the item, and Laura Coulton, winning the open category. Flushed, made by Claudia Leonard (model), Hannah Stevenson and Kate Lightowlers won the junior category while Con-nie Sellers won the technical category.

New partner at Pitt & MoorePitt & Moore Commercial lawyer Geoff Caradus has recently been promoted to partnership at the firm, having been an associate for the past four years.Head of the Commercial team, Rob Lane, says Geoffs promotion not only shows the firm respects the skills and dedication Geoff offers to his clients, but its also a reflection of the firms desire to support the regions businesses. The commercial environment is increasingly complex for businesses and we have been able to support a range of clients and help guide them through the raft of legal requirements. By making Geoff a partner in the firm, we are ac-knowledging his legal proficiency as well as the firms desire to serve our busi-ness community with top level practitioners, says Rob.Geoff Caradus was born in Nelson and returned here with his family four years ago after working for leading law firms in London and before that in Wellington. His clients include some of the largest and most established organisations in the region, right through to owner-operator businesses. He works across a range of sectors with particular specialities in the areas of agribusiness, aqua-culture, commercial property investment, maori business and construction. I have seen in the past four years how businesses in the Top-ofthe-South have weathered and grown from the impacts of the global financial crisis. What Im seeing now amongst my clients is a determination to succeed and the resulting growth in financial success coming from that drive. Its definitely a positive vibe, says Geoff. He says that in an industry which relies increasingly on electronic forms of communication, he particularly enjoys the way in which business for most people in Nelson still remains a very personal thing. In the UK I could work for months around the clock on some mega-deal and never meet who I was working for in person. Here, you get to have face-to-face discussion with business owners so you can really get a feel for what they actu-ally want, work out solutions and see when you are making a difference. Thats the hugely rewarding part of my job.Pitt & Moore is the largest long-standing law firm in Nelson having started life in Trafalgar St nearly 150 years ago.The first clients were local businesses and the emphasis on supporting local business has stayed a strong focus since then. The firm has 7 Partners Graham Allan, Rob Lane, Mike McMellon, Sian Holden, Anissa Bain, Marty Logan and Geoff Caradus.

What Im seeing now amongst my clients is a determination to succeed and the resulting growth in financial success coming from that drive.
