CONVICT RECORDS OF THE FENIAN TRANSPORTEES

SOURCES:

Most information is from two convict records held in the WesternAustralian archives, Battye Library, Perth: R16, WAA 1156 - Register of theHougoumont convicts; and V10,WAA 1156 - Superintendent's Register, 1867-1877.The quoted remarks related to convictions in Ireland are from Fenian PapersFile 5246R, No. 27, State Paper Office, Dublin. Some additional details inregard to the convicts' lives after release have been drawn from the thesisfor ready reference. Years of birth have been calculated from ages givenupon arrival at Fremantle on 10 January 1868. Any convict whose birthdayhappened to be between 1st and 10th January would therefore have been borna year later than indicated here. After each convict's sentence, the English

prison occupied just prior to transportation is given together with theconvict's number there. The second convict number is that received uponarrival in Australia.
