Global warming heating up, says wildlife group officialPatrick SweetStaff Writer

Feeling the heat this sum-mer? Yourenot theonly oneto have noticed.

What many consider justanother brutal heat wave,

though, others are callingsigns of globalwarming.

The National Wildlife Fed-eration is amping up globalwarming awareness in thewake of clean air and cli-mate change legislationdying in Congress. Swelter-ing temperaturesin Luzerne

County, they say, are a sam-ple of whats to come.

A Senatebill amending theClean AirAct andcreating anational uniform air pollut-ant regulatory program forelectric utilities stalled whenit was sent to thesenate com-

    mittee on environment andpublicworks.

Ed Perry, an outreachcoordinator for the wildlifefederation, said the legisla-tion charging utilities fordumping carbon dioxidewould have been key tosparking positive environ-

mental change.Once we put a price on

carbon pollution, Perrysaid, there is going to beinnovation.

The federal EnvironmentalProtection Agency released afact sheet regarding global

warming which classifiesburning fossil fuels, defores-tation and land developmentas the primary contributorsto climate change.

Climate change is a realand urgent challenge that isalready affecting people andthe environmentworldwide,

    the agencyssheet stated.

Theprimaryeffect of glob-al warming on LuzerneCounty residents will likelybe heat-related illnesses, Per-ry said.

According to theEPA, heatisthe leadingcauseof weath-er-related death, with morethan6,300casesbetween 1976

    and 2006. On the upside,

increased temperatures mayresult in fewer deaths fromextreme cold.

I think you are going tosee people in this town thatdont have air conditioningsuffer, Perry said.
