Gene Soslow plays the music from that era and before—psychedelic and ’60s underground, with many other ’60s surprises. “I love reminding former hippies and others how it felt grow- ing up in the ’60s and what we stood for and believed in. We had many causes to address, while trying to spread our message of love and peace for all. I was acquainted with Stoney and saw him at many venues. New Releases LEGENDARY SONGWRITER Chip Taylor was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (along with Marvin Gaye, Tom Petty, and Elvis Costello) in a special ceremony on June 9 in New York City. The author of “Wild Thing,” “Angel of the Morn- ing” and “Try (Just a Little Bit Harder),” among many others, con- tinues to make his mark on the mu- sic world. Taylor’s new album, Little Brothers (out June 17 on Train Wreck Records, is distributed by RED), is a charming collection filled with en- gaging, graceful songs that will make you both smile and think. It is the perfect soundtrack for a peaceful, sunny morning; a quietly fun album that also rewards close listening. The cover photo is an old boyhood snap- shot of Chip and his two brothers (actor Jon Voight and renowned vol- canologist Barry Voight) on the cover. Recorded at Athletic Sound in Halden, Norway, Little Brothers fea- tures Taylor backed by a splendid band that includes Goran Grini (key- boards), long-time musical compa- triot John Platania (guitar), Bill Troiani (bass), and a backing chorus of Taylor’s granddaughters, Riley, Kate and Sammy Ennis. Austin native Jane Ellen Bryant will release her new EP, Twenties. Producer Frenchie Smith ( Jet, BLAH By Bellicose Bullfeather BLAH Santana and The Toadies) said “Of the bands I’ve personally gotten record deals/agents/management etc. in the past ... Jane is fundamentally the most important artist I’ve met.” Twenties is a follow-up to her Ameri- cana album Hourglass. The July 8 release party at Lambert’s. Travis Green’s new CD titled A Little Too Late showcases the Austin- based singer/guitarist on ten original songs backed by a group of West Coast all-star musicians, including Kid Andersen (guitar – who also pro- duced),–Randy Bermudes (bass), Jason Hansen (drums), Jim Pugh (keyboards), Nancy Wright (sax), and Lisa Leuschner Andersen and Courtney Knott (backup vocals). The songs on A Little Too Late “strike a perfect balance between blues-ori- ented tracks and roots rocker/ rockabilly sounds, creating a trove of grooves just right for dancing and listening.” Mark May’s new CD titled Blues Heaven from blues-rock guitarist Mark May, a former member of Dickey Betts’ Great Southern Band. Special guests include Greg Martin (Kentucky Headhunters), Hadden Sayers, Eric Demmer (Gatemouth Brown) and Steve Krase. The new Love in a Hurricane is the Connor Ray Music label debut of Houston-based singer/guitarist, a 2016 International Blues Challenge finalist The Mighty Orq. Recorded at Houston’s legendary Sugar Hill Stu- dios and produced by The Mighty Orq and Josh Applebee, Love in a Hurricane features his regular tour- ing band: The Mighty Orq (vocals, electric, acoustic, resonator, cigar box and Weissenborn guitars); Jimmy Rose (drums, percussion, mando- lin); Barry Seelen (organ, piano, ac- cordion); and Terry Dry (bass). The self-titled debut album from Charlie Faye & the Fayettes finally hits the streets since getting some nice buzz out of SXSW. Charlie Faye and BettySoo are Austin-based singer-songwriters with a solid fol- lowing in Americana. Akina Adderley (granddaughter of jazzman Nat and great niece of Cannonball) comes from R&B and jazz. The three meld voices and dance moves seamlessly as the Fayettes. The pillar of great pop is great songwriting, of course. “This album marks Charlie Faye’s move into the Brill Building-esque song turf of Carole King & Gerry Goffin and Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil. The songs may hearken to Motown,” according to the press re- lease. But “Eastside,” for example, is a biting comment on gentrification and cities out-pricing its creatives. The Shangri-Las and Supremes did not play their own instruments, whereas the Fayettes do.
