What is BD-J?

Offering unparalleled flexibility and unrivalled features, BD-J enriches entertainment byfacilitating extensive interactive applications such as Picture-in-Picture displays. Basedupon the Java runtime environment, it aids the creation of the most completeentertainment experience available.

IntroductionBD-J mode was designed to enable the content provider access to almostunlimited function options. Interactive titles come to life, adding extra dimensionsof entertainment to the user’s experience. Every Blu-ray disc player is equippedwith a Java interpreter so that it is capable of running discs authored in BD-Jmode.

Graphical User InterfaceWhen using BD-J mode, the author has complete freedom when designing the user interface. This interface is accessed using standardbuttons on the remote control. 32 bit dynamically generated graphics, millions of colors, can be displayed, and it also supports standard fileformat picture display such as JPEG, PNG, etc.

Playback ControlThe BD-J application can act as the sole interface to the disc’s content (thus replacing the player’s on-screen controls as with discsauthored in HDMV mode). The BD-J environment offers all of the playback features of HDMV mode, including the selection of subtitles, trickplay modes, angles, etc. Video can even be scaled dynamically, so that it can be played in reduced size at the corner of a menu, andresume full screen size when a selection is made.

HDi: Changing the Way We Make and Watch Movies.

HDi offers advanced viewing features which are simply not possible on standarddefinition DVDs. With HDi, you can enjoy enhanced content, navigation options, andexpansive online network connectivity.

Interactive MenusViewers are given access to menu-driven features such as a chapter index or special features andallowed to change scenes or other parameters without interrupting the enjoyment of their expansivecinema experience. Standard DVD menus may only be accessed only when the movie is stopped.

Mandatory Network ConnectionKeep discs up to date with fresh content through the advanced networking connection. New audio-language tracks, streaming-audio commentary, HD trailers, and community-driven features such asmovie recommendations and comments are available for download.

Dual-Decoder Picture-in-PictureBonus content such as alternate angles, behind the scenes footage, director commentaries, andactor interviews can be accessed during the movie, enabling HDi features to be started, stopped,and swapped without leaving the movie.

Defining HD with BD Profile 1.1 (After Firmware Upgrade)

Samsung’s BD-UP5000 supports BD Profile 1.1, packing extra power into the player. The inclusion of a secondary video decoder,secondary audio, and a minimum of 256MB local storage is an advancement that allows full interaction with Picture-in-Picture displays,audio commentaries, and direct access to stored bookmarks, scenes, and movie preferences. When software authored with interactive features dependent on Profile 1.1 hardware capabilities are played on profile 1.0 players, somefeatures may not be available or may offer only limited capability. Profile 1.0 players, however, will still be able to play the main feature ofthe disc. Presently operating BD Profile 1.0, Samsung’s BD-UP5000 is upgradeable to BD Profile 1.1 after firmware update.
