    I n the pas t few articles , we have been focus ing on intervall ic approaches appli ed to s cale patterns . I hope you have beenpracticing these dil igentl y; but more than anythi ng els e, I hope that you have been paying attention to the sounds of eachexercise. Remember: T he goal i s to combine our refined mus cle memory gained fr om each exercis e with the ear tr ainingelements that allow us to fir s t hear and then recall each unique intervall ic grouping. T his month we wil l take that to the nextlevel by incorporating a change of dir ection in our exercises.

    Bidirectional exercises are still similar to the regular intervallic exercises in that each successive scale degree is still paired to anote that i s separated by a set intervall ic dis tance. However , the dif ference is that each s uccess ive pair of scale degreesseparated by that interval are played in an opposite dir ection. For example, the fir s t interval would be played in an ascendingfashi on, foll owed by the next interval played in a descending fashion. T his swapping of dir ections would continue through the

    enti re exercis e. I f you are confus ed by this explanation, tr y playing thr ough each of the following exercis es and you wil l begin tosee and hear the pattern more clearly.

    For the following examples , we will refer again to our tr us ty maj or s cale pattern. E ach indivi dual exercis e wil l take a choseninterval and apply it to each note of the maj or s cale within a particular posi tion. As with previous exercis es , I suggest s tarti ngwith the 3 note per s tr ing pos iti ons for the maj or scale (S ee figs . 3 a.- 3c.)

    As us ual, practice these exercis es us ing other modes and scale types over the ful l r ange of your neck. T ry to be as accurate aspossible with your fingerings. You should be able to play these without having to look at your hands. Because these intervalsoften incorporate str ing sk ipping, they are fantastic devices for honing your r ight and left hand technique and coordination. Dont

    forget the right and left hand pr inciples we discus sed previousl y as you work thr ough them! S tay focused, and youl l be amazedat your results.
