Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time s October 25, 2015

Pastoral Corner Flor McCarthy tells a story of a young man, blind from birth, who fell in love with a girl. The more he got to know her, the deeper his love became. He found her full of charm and wit. A beautiful friendship developed between them. But then one day a friend told him that the girl wasn't very good-looking. From that moment on he began to lose interest in her. Too bad. He had been 'seeing' her very well. It was his friend who was blind. A blind person doesn't judge by appearances. We must remember that there is sight and insight.

Because most of us are gifted with sight, we might think that the Gospel story has no relevance for us. But it is precisely because we can see that the Bartimaeus story is important for us. How well do we really see things? Do we have insight as well as physical sight?

We all admit that there are many different forms of blindness when we use expressions such as, 'I was completely in the dark,' or 'it suddenly dawned on me,' or 'it was right in front of me but I couldn't see it.'

We see in Bartimaeus that a blind person who has more faith than the sighted onlookers. Bartimaeus 'sees' more than the sighted disciples, in the sense of having more insight and understanding which leads him to faith.

Bartimaeus, the blind beggar, had more faith in Jesus than many of his disciples who had perfect eyesight. Whereas he has no doubt, they are full of doubt and hesitation.

One of the saddest things Jesus said about his contemporaries was this: 'They have eyes but see not, they have ears but hear not! Many people witnessed the great things Jesus did, yet had no faith in him. Lack of faith is a more serious blindness than mere physical blindness.

Bartimaeus acts on his faith and becomes a disciple. When Bartimaeus was cured he could have gone off and lived his own life, forgetting about Jesus. Instead, he follows Jesus 'on the way' as one translation puts it. Bartimaeus follows Jesus into the way of Christian life as a disciple. We are called to do the same.

THANKSGIVING DINNER

St. Philip Neri with New Seasons will host our 5th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 26, 11:00am – 12:30pm. The meal is open to all parishioners and neighbors who are alone, without plans, homeless or in transition. Last year we served around 80 people and the leftover food was donated to Blanchet House the following day. You can help by donating: vegetable dishes, pies, & juice drinks. We will also again collect socks, gloves, hats, & scarves. Signup sheets are available in the church foyer. Cash donations are also needed to help offset the cost of the food prepared by New Seasons. You can send your donation with Thanksgiving Dinner in the memo line to the church office or drop in the collection. There are envelopes available on the counters in the church foyer. Cash donations received above what is needed for the dinner are used throughout the year for parish outreach and care to people in need.
