063: Material Safety Data Sheets

Hazardous substances All hazardous substances used & stored in the work place must be accompanied by a material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

A hazardous substance is defined as a substance that is toxic, corrosive, carcinogenic, irritant, mutagenic, or teratogenic.

Hazardous substances can be very toxic, unless used correctly. The toxicity varies with the type of chemical, the absorption method through the skin and the length & amount of exposure.

Hazardous substances enter the body through:

Skin contact & absorption;

Inhalation of fumes, vapours & dust;

In direct contact with the substance when eating or drinking;

Accidental contact, handling contaminated equipment or blowing to clear nozzles.

A register of all hazardous substance must also be maintained.

The register is to contain a list of all substances currently used in the workplace, including the approximate volume / amount, and storage location, together with each MSDS.

Records & details of any workplace assessments must also be maintained.

Records of MSDS’s on site generally must be kept for 5 years, while employee health assessments must be kept for 30 years.

The register is to be kept readily available to all persons who might be exposed to the substances, including emergency service personnel.

MSDS’s Suppliers & manufacturers are required to provide toxicological information on products they sell & supply for use in workplaces.

Employers therefore need to request a copy of the MSDS when they purchase the product.

If a hazardous substance does not have an MSDS, contact your supervisor before using it.

The MSDS provides important information regarding its use, storage, hazardous effects, personal protective clothing & equipment required during handling, ingredients, first aid & emergency information.

It is also important that you have specific training before handling or using some hazardous substances.

Facilitator duties for this session: Obtain a sample of a Material Safety Data Sheet for demonstration purposes during the discussion portion.

What this Safety Talk covers: What employees need to know about MSDS, and how use a MSDS.

Discussion notes:

Facilitator duties for this session: Review your company policy on first aid treatment and medical emergencies so you can answer questions during the discussion.

What this Safety Talk covers: Moving an injured person.

Information on the product label The name of the material and the name of its manufacturer. A hazard warning, if applicable.

What part or parts of your body the material could affect. Precautions for safe use and storage.

Information on the data sheet Ingredients. Physical data, such as boiling point, specific gravity, percent volatile, and

viscosity. Fire and explosion hazards. Re-activity data.

Environmental information, including spill response and recommended disposal.

Suggested first-aid.

Precautionary information. Health hazard data.

Important things to know about a chemical What are the safe exposure levels? What are the first-aid procedures?

What precautions should I take? What should I do if there is a spill or leak? If it catches fire, what should I use to put out the fire?

Are there situations where this chemical should not be used, or are there materials that it should not come in contact with?

Review and Discussion What does “MSDS” mean?

What should every hazardous substance have?

Name four ways a hazardous substance can enter the body.

How do we know if a substance is hazardous?

What if a hazardous substance doesn’t have an MSDS associated with it?

What are some examples of hazardous substances you may encounter?

Pick one of the substances from the last question, and discuss the risks associated with handling it, & determine what precautions should be taken.

How does the product label information differ from the MSDS information?

What are some important things you need to know about a hazardous substance before its use?

Emergency and first-aid procedures.

Whom to contact for more information.

How your company’s hazardous materials system works.
