Key Preliminary Findings
• Texas ranks second (with Pa) in the U.S. in its number of pharmacy schools.
• Applications to pharmacy school increased by 134 percent from 2000 to 2005.
• Graduates increased by 61 percent from 2000 to 2005 and are projected to increase by 53 percent from 2005 to 2014 as the new pharmacy schools build capacity.
• Residents of the Metroplex are under-represented in pharmacy education.
06/2006
Key Preliminary Findings (cont).• Texas is a net importer of pharmacists. In 2005,
the net increase in total licensees did not meet the State’s annual projection of pharmacist job openings.
• Texas schools could increase their class size and remain within the norm for schools in states with similarly large population.
• The Metroplex has the third largest number of pharmacists per 100,000 population in the state.
• 49% of new out-of-state graduates and 23% of new Texas graduates practice in the Metroplex.
