Catch the Reading BugLast year over 6,200 children in Burnaby flew into the branches to join the Summer Reading Club. Almost 2,800 completed the program and earned Catch the Reading Bug medals. Over 700 children and their families buzzed around the Civic Square on September 8 to be honoured for their achievement at the Library’s 17th annual Pancake Breakfast and Summer Reading Club Medal Award Ceremony.
The Summer Reading Club is sponsored by Burnaby Public Library and the British Columbia Library Association, with support from the Public Library Services Branch of the Ministry of Education. The Library gratefully acknowledges the support of the Royal Bank Financial Group for providing the medals, Station Square Pub for providing the ingredients for a tasty breakfast, and the Burnaby Fire Fighters for flipping hundreds of pancakes.
Looking for that great summer read? Here are some of our favourite Canadian books from coast to coast to coast:
Easy Ways To Help Your ChildSucceed at Reading. Get your child a
Burnaby Public Library card. It’s FREE!
. Sign your child up for the FREE Summer Reading Club. It’s open to children of all ages, even babies.
. Set time aside for reading every day. Like other skills, reading improves with regular practice.
. Make books a big part of your life. Read them everywhere – at home, in the car, on vacation, in the park. Librarians can help you find good books.
. Read to your child. Listening to stories helps preschoolers get ready to read and helps school-aged children develop their reading skills.
. Set a good example. Read on your own in the language of your choice, and talk to your kids about what you’re reading.
