ACFL&MH News & Notes

A Message to Library & Music Hall Supporters

Dear Friends,What a milestone year this has been for the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall!We welcome a new Library director, a director who brings the required professional credentials, combined

with entrepreneurial business experience, and a passion and expertise for history, genealogy and the Civil Warthat might have been custom made for the “Carnegie Carnegie.”

We look forward to the mark that Diane Ragan, working with Library staff, trustees, and most importantlyyou, our patrons, will make on Library programming and services.

Read through this newsletter and share our pride that programming at the Library & Music Hall is keepingpace with efforts to restore our beautiful building. From a Honus Wagner celebration in July to upgradedchildren’s programming to recording sessions in our acoustically excellent Music Hall to “Andrea Marcovicci onBroadway…at Main Street” the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall is emerging as a recognizedregional asset.

And, with the restoration and refurbishment of our windows we have completed Phase II of the restoration ofthe Library & Music Hall. The building is structurally sound! We have much more to do, but our Library &Music Hall stands secure for its second century of service.

Thank you. We cannot stop now. Interior improvements that restore the historic character of our lovelyLibrary & Music Hall, while adding amenities such as air conditioning, technological and life safety upgrades aswell as parking improvements, lighting and landscaping lie ahead.

Phase III of the restoration is what we all look forward to most. The generosity of our community has beenthe backbone of this effort from the outset. We count on your continued support to finish this grandundertaking.

All best wishes and gratitude. We look forward to seeing you here soon and often,

Charles R. Goetz William E. Manby Ronald L. MoehlerCampaign Co-Chair Campaign Co-Chair President, ACFL&MH Board of Trustees

Certainly one of the mostchallenging tasks a library directorfaces is to effectively promoteprograms and services. Libraries arejust about the most cost effective useof tax dollars in providing publicservices. For instance, many peopleare not aware that a library cardfrom the Andrew Carnegie FreeLibrary provides them access to theholdings of 44 libraries in 86locations throughout AlleghenyCounty. Card holders can orderbooks, magazines, videos, CDs,books on tape, even puppets fromany of these libraries and pick themup at the library of their choice.

No time to stop in to see the richarray of resources we have to offer? No problem. A 2002 poll conducted

for the American LibraryAssociation found that 91% ofrespondents expect libraries to beneeded in the future, despite theincreased availability of informationvia the internet. For that reason, libraries serve their communities byproviding access to accurateinformation from anywhere a patronhas access to the web. Your librarycard can be used from home (as wellas here in the Library) to searchthousands of full text periodicalarticles, newspapers, a majorencyclopedia, plus photographs, pictures, charts, maps, referencematerials for young people andmore. You will find materials ofinterest in most subject areas for allage groups from young children toadults.

All of us are faced with makingdifficult choices each day. Howsuccessful our decisions are is due inlarge part to the information wehave available at hand. Librariansplay an increasingly important rolein the information age. Knowinghow to find, evaluate, and use thebest and most current information

available to us can be difficult. Stopin to see us, give us a call, or sendan e-mail: [email protected] are here to serve you—weare the ultimate search engine!!

More Listening and Viewing TimeEffective immediately: any DVD

or video longer than six hours willcirculate for three weeks.Don’t Lend Your Card

Only the patron whose name ison the library card record ispermitted to use it, whether forchecking out items or accessing thecomputer. Your card will be“expired” if you let someone else useit. You must then come in withpicture ID to renew your card. Thisis true for family members as well. The Better to Serve You

Computer usage time has beenchanged. Patrons now have an initial30-minute use followed by two

Cabaret Singer Entertains and EnchantsWith all the sparkle and wit of the consummate

cabaret performer, Andrea Marcovicci brought a tasteof the big stage to our Carnegie Music Hall. Theaudience caught up in her skillfully designed programof music and talk willingly followed her from song tosong, applauding the performance and laughing withthe banter in between.

“Andrea Marcovicci on Broadway…at Main Street”took place October 21 and raised more than $42,000for the campaign to restore the Library & Music Hall.

The theme of Ms. Marcovicci’s program was herpopular “The Love Songs of Cole Porter,” featuringthe urban flair and sophistication of a previous centurythat blends memorable flowing melodies withsometimes complex lyrics, ripe for a variety ofinterpretations. Expertly accompanied by pianistShelley Markham, Marcovicci smoothed the edges ofPorter’s occasional “brittleness” to fill the heart withthe poignant fullness of melody and lyric.

And she was happy to perform this show at theAndrewCarnegie FreeLibrary MusicHall for thebenefit of thecapitalcampaign. Asshe toldTribune-ReviewMusic WriterBob Karlovits,

“I’m really into restoring anything…I like to do workto restore old buildings in the same way I work torestore old songs.”

Marcovicci extolled the Library’s historic characterand mission, and stated her hope that the Music Hallwould continue to be transformed into a graciousperformance space made comfortable for modernexpectations.

Toward the end of her show she quoted AndrewCarnegie, who with his gift of libraries “contributed tothe enlightenment and the joys of the mind, to thethings of the spirit...” with what he thought was “thenoblest possible use of wealth.”

Marcovicci has spent a lifetime entertainingaudiences not only with her musical talents but also asan actress on film and television, beginning her careerin the daytime television series Love Is A ManySplendored Thing. She began her career as a singer 20years ago, and has performed coast to coast, holdingthe record for most seasons ever played at New York’slegendary Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel.

This year she’ll celebrate her 20th anniversary withHildegarde, a show celebrating the cabaret singer whodied in 2005 at age 99.

Pittsburgh’s voice of jazz, WDUQ 90.5FM’s Tony Mowod brought his own brand ofcharm when introducing Marcovicci.

The sophistication of the eveningcontinued after the performance. The second-floor Reception Hall, with abundant roses, flickering candles and jazz improvisationsperformed by Carnegie’s Phil Salvato and RonWilson, assumed a soignée nightclubambience. Caterer Michael Lench served up anelegant after-theater supper, and at midnight afew last guests were still lingering among thetables, talking in the easy, relaxed atmosphere.

Marty Powell of The Design Alliance Architectsexplains latest plans for ACFL&MH renovations toBlue Ribbon Committee members and otherstakeholders in the campaign at a July meeting.

been a co-founder of two 501 (c) 3 non-profitorganizations focused on environmentalconcerns.

After 105 years, the Andrew Carnegie FreeLibrary is hardly a start up business. Thatsaid, the $8.6 million campaign to restore thehistoric facility, combined with the board andstaff ’s commitment to developing theorganizational capacity to ensure theACFL&MH’s vitality during its secondcentury of service, make this a time oftransition for the Library.

Ragan assumed her position on October23. For all her enthusiasm for history she isvery cognizant of libraries’ evolving role.“Today’s libraries are one-stop shops. Whereelse can you have access to nearly everythingon the web or in print and receive personalassistance in finding it? The Andrew CarnegieFree Library plays an increasingly importantrole in the community in navigating theinformation age.”

Stop in to meet Diane Ragan. She doesn’tplan on spending much time in her office, and looks forward to getting to know thepatrons for whom she’s committed toproviding quality Library services.
