The New Board, 2006

Welcome to another year of fun with your Porsche friends in the Sacramento Valley Region. Ballots are in and counted. Your 2006 board is excited to be here.

For 2006 we have some new and some returning Board members. Returning Vice President Andy Leight has vowed to carry on with the same enthusiastic spirit he demonstrated in 2005. Kevin Dougherty, who has done a wonderful job watch-ing over our 2005 finances as Treasurer, will return to the Board in a new role as Secretary. Betty Silva will be taking up the reigns of Treasurer. Julia Lynn, who you will recognize from her many timely email blasts, will serve a second term as Social Director. Tom Sisson will carry on for 2006 in both capacities as Membership Director and Goodie Store Chair. Matt Deter, our Autocross Chair has a big 2006 season ahead with the added responsibil-ity of Competition & Safety Director. John Murphy will continue into 2006 as Webmaster for SVR. Kim Nelson, our Past President, will continue to provide guidance from his experience as President. 2005 Competition & Safety Director Frederick D. Rauch has agreed to stay on as Drivers’ Education Chair and continue his highly successful Drivers’ Ed series. Dick MacFarlane will continue his excel-lent job of promoting SVR as Advertising Manger. Helen Ashuckian will contine her efforts into 2006 as Rally Chair. Buzz and Julia Lynn have stepped up as G24 chairs for 2006 and even now I am sure they are planning some fun new member events. Concours Chair Kent Brandon will be putting together another great Concour season. Roger Walker, SVR’s Technical Chair, will is thinking hard about new tech articles and tech sessions.

I would like to thank the board members who made great contributions to SVR in 2005, but will not be returning: Steve Goltz completed his second term as Secretary and Newsletter Editors Elliot & Aleece Hoffman, who passed on the

Drifter duties in July 2005.Last but not least, we finish on a sad note. Due to changes in his life outside of SVR, Newsletter Editor Nick Harrigan has asked to pass on The Drifter duties in early 2006. Ever the trooper, Dennis Stettner has vol-unteered to mentor the new editor(s). If you are interested in this post and wish to know more, please contact either Nick at (916) 315-8548 or Dennis at (916) 899-4968. If you are interested in taking over the office of The Drifter editor, please call me at (916) 765-2801 or email me at [email protected].

End of the Year Awards

One of the duties I enjoyed the most was giving out SVRs awards. We have had a wonderful year of activities and it shows. Here are the event awards for 2005:

Hidden Hero

Each year we have members who help SVR, mostly, out of the spotlight. Besides putting on activities of their own, they give much of their own time to help others put on activities, provide guidance, and handle club business. Because they perform behind the scenes, most of our members will never know how much has been done. Every time something needed to be done, it was like balls being tossed up into the air. There was always someone stepping in to catch them without being asked. We call these members our Hidden Heroes. It is my honor to pres-ent the 2005 Hidden Hero Awards to Kern Breaux, Mike Willis, and Rik Larson.

Enthusiast Of The Year

This was a tough one. We were really not too sure whether to award this as the 2005 or 2006 award. Julia Lynn, a fairly new SVR member, seemed to involve herself this year in just about everything Porsche. Besides being Social Director and compet-ing successfully in Zone Concours and as-sisting in other activities, Julia volunteered with her husband Buzz to be Co-Chairs of CRAB 32 and Chairs of the G24 group, while continuing to be our 2006 Social Director. Thank you Julia!

I am honored to continue on as President of SVR. I must admit that the 2005 board of di-rectors and chairs made 2005 one of the best years of my involvement with SVR. They were all so good at what they did and worked together so well that 2005 was a pleasure. We were all in good hands. I believe that we are in equally good hands with your 2006 board. I wish to say thanks for the support you showed all of us with your votes.

Drive safe and have fun!

5The Drifter

So, you’ve just bought a Porsche and are interested in learning to drive it the way it’s designed to be driven. Or, you’re a long-time owner and have considered track driving, but were a bit hesitant. I purchased my first Porsche two years ago and had a great time driving our narrow, winding, Sierra Nevada foothill roads. I pushed the speed-and-cor-nering envelopes, and on several occasions, came perilously close to an off-road experi-ence. Not good on a mountain road! At club meetings and day trips, I heard members discuss driving at Thunderhill, Sears Point, and even Laguna Seca. I assumed they were skilled racers, never believing mere mortals could drive their cars at professional tracks. With encouragement from fellow club members, I signed up for the June 4, 2004, “track day” at Thunderhill Raceway, sent in my entry fee, and waited with increasing anxiety. I received several emails from the event organizer describing what to expect, supplies to bring (few are needed), and car preparation (minimal). The day went some-

thing like this. Thunderhill is near the town of Willows, 80 miles north of Sacramento on Interstate 5, an easy drive. Some club members drive up the morning of the event, but I’d recom-mend traveling the night before so you can get to the track early and rested. Most driv-ers overnight at the Golden Pheasant Best Western motel in Willows, just 15 minutes from Thunderhill. You’ll also be able to enjoy dinner with other Porscheophiles at the Casa Ramos Restaurant next to the motel and get event registration out of the way. We arrived at the track at 7:15 am and prepped our cars, checking tire pressures and

oil levels, cleaning windshields, and removing items we didn’t want rattling around while on the track. Next was the drivers’ meeting at 8:00 where the event organizer discussed safety, the driving schedule for the day, recent improvements to the track, rules of passing, and what each flag color meant. The last order of business consisted of pairing each novice driver with an instructor. At the meeting’s end, the advanced drivers headed for the track with the intermediates to fol-low. Novice drivers remained for class room instruction on basic driving techniques and

Drivers’ meeting

safety. Toward the middle of the intermediate drivers’ session, the PA system called novice drivers to the “grid,” which is the parking area at the entrance to the track. Once there, I met Carl, my instructor, who asked about my driving experience, and sensing my nervousness, made reassuring comments. Instructors are volunteers who are advanced drivers with years of track experience and possess considerable patience. The first lap was taken under a yellow flag (caution) at about 40 MPH, allowing us to familiarize ourselves with the track as well as to get our cars and minds warmed up. Carl pointed out the flag workers standing on their platforms around the track, ready to warn us of hidden obstacles around the next corner or over the next rise. He also explained “the line,” the path around the track which provides the lowest lap times. He described when to turn, brake and accelerate, and many other details, which I promptly forgot in my excited state. During this first twenty five minute session, we took it easy---making a mistake at a low speed was far better than making one at a higher speed. Twenty five minutes doesn’t sound like much, but near the end, I was looking forward to driving into the pits to stop and take a deep breath. Before we got out of the car, Carl pointed out several things I had done right and gave me some pointers to think about. The session was followed by a “download”

in the club house, where the chief instructor for the novice group answered questions (we had many), discussed driving techniques and safety. This was getting interesting!

During the second session, Carl began with, “You’re doing ok so far, but let’s avoid moving your hands around so much. You’ll be much smoother if you hold the wheel at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions and don’t move your hands from those spots. Try looking further down the track one or two turns ahead. If you look right in front of the car, you’ll always be surprised and your movements will be jerky. Looking down the track gives you time to plan your moves.” And so it went. He provided little gems of advice that led to a huge improvement in my confidence behind the wheel. Little by little, I drove faster, more smoothly, and became less nervous. I began to realize that going fast isn’t a matter of engine size. It’s more about how you handle the car, smoothness, driving the line, and knowing when to brake and accelerate. After the second session, we enjoyed lunch cooked by Thunderhill chefs, which was served on the covered patio. I enjoyed comparing notes with other novices and listening to advanced drivers’ comments on driving and track conditions.

Download session

On the track

Rested, fed and experienced, I was ready for session 3. Carl apparently felt the same way. As we entered turn 2, a large, flat, sweeping turn, he suggested more throttle.

What do Wolf, Pope, and Mercer have in common? How about Model A, B, and T?? Join us in April for Crab 32 and find out. Crab will be at the Towe Auto Museum where we will have a walking tour, and who knows, maybe those very questions will appear on the tour. You take the tour on your own either Friday night or Saturday, but you must turn in your answers by the end of the CRAB feed Saturday evening. Prizes will be awarded on Sunday and they will be beautiful glass creations by Rachel. See you there!

CRAB 32 is Coming!April 7,8,9, 2006

The Legendary SVR West Coast Weekender is Back!

Fun Concours! Great Rally! Autocross!

Driving and Walking Tours!

Beer&Brat and more....

Location: Towe Auto Museum, Sacramento

CRAB 32 Co-Chairs: Kim Nelson & Kim Kinder

A big thanks to all those that came out to the January Planning meeting! We had a lot of fun sharing some great ideas and get-ting a start on 2006. There is always time to get another item on the calendar, so if an idea pops into your head about a tour or something you would like to put together for the club, don’t hesitate to contact me and I can get you started in the right direction! It doesn’t have to be a big tour. It could be a really cool garage to tour, a tech session (be it auto care or mechanical), a favorite little drive to a nice picnic area or restaurant…we’re easy to entertain! We had several activities in 2005 that were big hits: the San Simeon Tour, Garage & Driving Tour, Silver Lake Tour, Foothills Tour, Mammoth Porsche Happen-ing Tour, Zaino Tech Session, Mendocino Tour, Driver’s Education and Autocross events, Chocolate Tour. With Valentine’s Day just around the

corner, I hope you got your sweetheart some-thing nice. A new microfiber wash mitt, some carnuba wax, leather conditioner, a Porter Cable polisher…oh, yeah don’t forget your spouse too, we need to keep them happy as well. 2006 promises to be a perfect year to do some club activities starting with CRAB in early April. Kim Nelson and Kim Kinder have graciously volunteered to be the chairs of this year’s CRAB. Notice I said “this year’s” CRAB and that’s because we already have chairs lined up for 2007, that would be me and Buzz! And for 2008, that would be Mark and Ursula Jusdish. We like to rope ‘em in early! CRAB will be April 7-9 at the Towe Auto Museum. Please read your Drifter for more information on this annual event! Also, take notice of “volunteer.” Our club is made of people who volunteer there time and efforts to make all these fun things happen. Be one of those people; it is a good time and very rewarding! There is always someone around to help you start. The first G24 Breakfast was lots of fun.

Ettore’s had great food and coffee and we had fun meeting some newer members and their cars. For those that don’t know, G24 stands for Group 24, which are SVR members who have been in the club less than 24 months. It is a way to get new members involved in our club and a way for them to meet other new members and to hopefully participate in more activities. The meetings will be scheduled on a Saturday morning in January (done), April, July and October. I will let you know about the exact date in plenty of time to put it on your calendars. John Murphy is doing a fabulous job with our web site. Please check it out if you haven’t in a while. The web address is: www.derporsche.net. There are updates about drivers’ education events that Frederick D. Rauch is putting on. I intend to participate in one of those this year! There happens to be one on my birthday. Seems like the perfect gift to me. Skippy is begging to be driven like a Porsche should!

What to Expect at CRAB

By Kim Kinder,SVR Member

The CRAB atmosphere is typically described as “two and half days of party-ing occasionally interrupted by competitive activities.” CRAB has had a friendly and relaxed atmosphere since its birth in 1972 and will remain the hallmark this time also. Competitive events are an important part of CRAB, but I believe it is the fun and ca-maraderie that you will take home with you and long remember. I would like you to meet many of the SVR members that have stepped forward to ensure a memorable weekend for all who attend. Not only do we have co-chairs, we also have co-co-chairs. These people are helping wherever needed with CRAB 32 plans, but most importantly they represent the future of CRAB. Buzz and Julia Lynn, our co-chairs, will head the CRAB 33 team and Mark and Ursula Judish, our co-co-chairs, will lead the CRAB 34 committee.

Welcome Party

Kern and Cindi Breaux will be returning to an earlier format for the welcome party, where the SVR members will be requested to bring an appetizer to share with the rest of the weekend attendees. Come and meet new friends and get re-acquainted with old friends.

Registration

Rik Larson has agreed to be our registrar. Be sure to send in your applications early; he’s ready to get busy.

Walking Tour

Herb and Jan Hoover are very familiar with the Towe Museum, so it was natural to ask for their help this year. You can do the tour at anytime during the weekend; just remember to turn in your quiz on time to win a prize.

Funkhana

Jon Kramer will be assisted by Tom Sis-son to provide us with a fun challenge. They aren’t giving us many clues about what they have in mind.

Autocross

Matt Deter has reserved the Stockton

Fairgrounds for the Autocross and will have fun classes set up to create a challenging and fun event for all participants. You can purchase a box lunch if are not able to pack a picnic lunch for the day.

Driving Tour

Tom and Tambra Kroetz will be taking CRABers to the Lodi wine area; they have discovered many excellent wineries in the Lodi vicinity. You can either bring your own picnic lunch or order box lunches in advance using the application form.

The CRAB

Mike and Emily Willis with assistance from Buzz and Julia Lynn, have lined up 2 ½ pounds of crab per person for the centerpiece of the weekend - the magnificent Crab ban-quet on Saturday evening. Awards for the day will be presented and door prizes awarded. I can’t imagine there are people out there that don’t like crab but if that is the case then we have lined up an alternate meal choice.

Ralley

Helen Ashukian will be providing a special fun rally on Sunday. Whether you are a novice or an expert rallyist, you will enjoy this drive through the countryside. It will feature a route designed to keep every-body headed in the right direction with just enough diversions thrown in to make the event interesting.

Concours

Dennis Stettner will have fun classes to suit all CRAB entrants from “display-only” to the always popular “hard-core.” Come and see the fabulous cars driven by SVR members.

Beer ‘n Brat Picnic (B&B)

Mike (Brat Meister) and Sue Am-brozewics will conclude the weekend with the traditional Beer and Bratwurst picnic. Have your taste buds ready for bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, cole slaw, and desert with selections of beverages to wash it down. The final awards for the weekend will be presented along with the Grand Door Prize (which you must be present to win).

Door Prizes

Tom Sisson is pounding the pavement looking to find a fun selection of door prizes to be awarded during the weekend.

Bill Keegan is working on finding sponsors for the weekend. Sponsors are a very important part of the weekend; it just wouldn’t be the same without them. Past sponsors include Niello Porsche, Michelin, IPB_Autosport, Performance Products, OK Tire and Automotive, Fabrication Special-ties, Frank’s Automotive, EBS Racing, Inter-state Oil Company, PM Motorsports, Silver Star Recycling, and Weidman’s Wheels. We thank them many times over for their continued support of SVR-PCA.

Awards

Rachel Johnson is coming up with something special for awards, something you will be proud to display in your home, something to remind you of all the fun you had at CRAB 32.

Shirts

Andy and Dianna Leight have once again agreed to find some fun shirts you can purchase as a memento of the weekend.

Gerry and Cookie Cupler, and Marvin and Ruth Stark have also volunteered to help make the weekend fun for all that at-tend. What a great team we have assembled. Check with the committee chairs if you are interested in getting involved to make this the best CRAB ever.

“If you can dream it, we can build it!” — Bob

Well, this is the start of my second year as your Zone Rep. Now, you may be wonder-ing what a zone rep is and what does he do? The first part is easy. A zone rep is a person that the National Board of Directors of PCA appoints to be the link between the national office and the local regions. The person that is to be considered for the zone rep position has normally been a region president during his or her membership. I am the person that the region presidents use as a sounding board for ideas, and I am a resource for information that is useful for the Region presidents and the general membership. To become a zone rep, you must volunteer for the position by filling out a form that is on the national website. Sometimes people seek out the job and volunteer for it and others get asked to do it by a region president or an outgoing zone rep. The national board of directors of

By Larry Sharp,Zone 7 Representative

To Serve Zone 7PCA then ask for the advice from the region presidents about the potential candidates. The PCA board of directors then appoints the person they see as the best fit for the Zone to the national board. The term is for two years with no limititaion for the amount of time you can serve as a zone rep. So, let’s say I serve two years as zone 7 rep and I wish to serve another term, I must fill out the forms like anyone else and go through the process of being appointed. That’s the part on how to become a zone rep. Now, the fun part is once you become the zone rep, you have discovered that it is the best job in PCA. I am supposed to go out to the Regions and attend as many events as possible to make sure that PCA is serving the memberships as best they can. So, darn, I must attend Crab, or go to Laguna Seca and attend the Porscheplatz. I also try to attend various region board meetings when I can; this is so I may be of help to the volunteers that are running your regions. My national duty is to attend the two annual national board meetings as your region’s president proxy just in case some items need to be voted on at the board meeting. The zone reps also meet twice a year and develop new ideas and events that meet the needs of the mem-

bership. One such idea was our own local “Escape to the Wine Country,” event which took place last year in Redwood Region. This idea was started among the national zone reps and the local region made it happen. So, that’s a brief description of what my position is and what I am supposed to do. I will be out there attending events, so if you want to say, “Hi” or ask me a question feel free to do so... that’s my job.

The tires began squealing, no doubt signal-ing our imminent demise. “A little more,” he calmly coached, just the opposite of what I was thinking. Accelerating, I realized the tires, although now protesting loudly, were gripping just fine. He explained that most tires are designed to squeal as a warning to the driver and they squeal well before releas-ing their grip on the pavement. He further explained that tires reach their maximum grip/traction when they are slipping slightly. In other words, if the tires are squealing just a little or not at all, I could take the turn even faster. I became comfortable passing and being passed. In order to pass, I had to wait for a “point by,” the hand signal made by the leading driver to indicate whether he wanted me to pass on his right or left. I provided the same hand signals to cars that caught up to me. Traffic was becoming a normal condi-tion. By the third download, it was clear the day’s excitement, concentration, and tension were having an effect. The chief instructor cautioned us about the effects of fatigue on judgment and reaction times and advised backing off a bit during our last session. Instead of driving at our maximum, he rec-ommended slowing down and concentrating on technique. By the end of the fourth session, I was de-veloping confidence that the car would react in predictable ways. I just had to learn how it felt in each circumstance and interpret the feedback it provided. I also had a good idea of the proper “line” and when to accelerate and brake. I was dead tired, but exhilarated. I had a great day and had done something which had been but a fantasy for years. An unexpected bonus was the friendly instructors and driv-ers, several of whom have become friends. Now, we email back and forth, coordinating track days so we can drive, share ideas and have fun together.

IT’S FEBRUARY AGAIN…

…and you know what that means don’t you? You have seen those little hearts around, the boxes of heart-shaped candy, the red underwear. Yep, Valentine’s Day is almost here and once again you have to think of a present for your significant other. Cripes! Didn’t we just get through with Christmas? Relax-- just call Saint Valentine’s agent at the GOODIE STORE!

The hot items right now are the T-shirts with Porsche embroidery for only $18. Also, it must be time to replace that SVR Polo shirt for only $30. You don’t have an SVR polo shirt? For Shame. Order now to redeem yourself! We have some in stock and can order more reasonably quickly—check out the SVR web site for more info.

Don’t forget, heavyweight SWEATSHIRTS with Porsche script are available in red, black, white, grey and navy. Also available are JACKETS, POLO SHIRTS, DENIM SHIRTS, and other garments. And the logos aren’t limited to the Porsche script-we can order the crest in the old style, the new style, and black and white. See the special one-off polo’s with the new Porsche crest. Various cars can also be put on the garments-there are 911’s, 356’s, 928’s, 914’s and Boxster’s. It may even be possible to match your car’s color. Hey, they are better than Teddy Bears for warmth. And, speaking of Teddy Bears (you knew this was coming didn’t you), do you know how they originated? In 1902, President Teddy Roosevelt took a political trip down South. His hosts, knowing Teddy loved to hunt, corraled a bear cub for him to shoot. But Teddy would not fire at the furry little thing. A newspaper cartoon praised the Pres for this, and it gave Brooklyn toy maker, Morris Michtom, an idea. He created a stuffed bear cub, “Teddy’s Bear”, and it did so well that the next year he formed the Ideal Toy Company. It’s been a bull market in Teddy Bears ever since.

Agricultural inspectors to count crabs. CRAB’s history has been competition, with alot of partying between

events. So,in that spirit, we will add a little, very little, competition to the social driving tour. Planned is a very lazy delta drive to count crabs. ( Now,that is

such a novel idea for CRAB ! ) Then we will head into the valley to inspect the farms. To maintain

our high standards in our professional appearance, please wear your agricultural inspectors hats. Creativity, humor, zeal, and whimsy should dictate

the ornaments on the above mentioned inspectors hats.

CRAB Concours

Yes, it’s back: The CRAB Concours! If you have never been to a previous CRAB, or think that all concours events are just for clean freaks and perfect Porsches, let me realign your thinking. The event is like no other concours you have ever heard about or attended. All the rules are thrown out; new totally outrageous rules are written and put into a hat. No one knows what rules will be used to judge the cars until just before the judging begins, when they are drawn from the hat. Clean, polished, and gleaming? You may be docked points for that. Got a big smudge on your rear view mirror? Bonus points may be in order. SVR or PCA logo not visible on or in your Porsche? That may or may not be helpful. The best way of win-ning? Just bring your Porsche as it is and park it on the concours field. It’s all about having fun and showing off your Porsche. Who knows...you may be driving a concours winning Porsche! Do you like to compete in a “normal” con-cours? Great. There will be a class for your Porsche to be judged by traditional concours rules. Been on the Rally or participated in the Autocross and still want to enter the Con-cours? Not a problem. We have a class for you to enter. In short, we would love to have every Porsche attending CRAB 32 to take part in the Concours. Want to win a coveted CRAB 32 trophy? This can be your claim to friends and family… “ I won 1st Place at the CRAB 32 Concours d’ Elegance!” Returning this year will be everyone’s favorite concours class: The Revered Class. “By Special Invitation Only” Porsches from around the SVR and surrounding PCA regions being shown in this special class. There will be fantastic, rare, and wonderful Porsche models for all to see. This will be a memorable collection of cars that will be on view on the final day of CRAB 32.See you there!

ALMS Action at Laguna Seca

the world are jealous of you because MRLS is right in your backyard. And I won’t even suggest the opportunity to use shopping in Monterey as a way to keep the non-car crowd entertained while you’re at the track. If camping interests you bring the whole family to MRLS and camp at the track. Something about the American Le Mans

Series (ALMS)

The tag line for the ALMS is that the events are “for the fans,” and they do a good job of living up to their word. For fans who can’t make it to the event, all races are tele-vised on SPEED Channel or CBS, and have extensive live coverage via the internet. For fans at the track, there’s the opportu-nity to get up close to the cars and drivers

this event? I don’t know anything about you, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, or the American Le Mans Series. What’s the big deal?”

Something about me

I’m just a guy whose interest in motor-sports has grown during the past five to six years. And I’d like to introduce you to the fun that I’m having. Something about Mazda Raceway at

Laguna Seca (MRLS)

Located between Salinas and Monterey, MRLS is a family friendly race facility within the Laguna Seca Recreation Area. If you’ve seen the Super-speedways on TV, well, MRLS couldn’t be more different. It’s a road course beautifully nestled in the hills of the coastal landscape. The course features both left and right turns, and significant elevation changes. The signature turn at the track is the world-famous Corkscrew. Spectators have great walking access to most parts of the track, and can also sit on a hillside under a tree or in some of the nicely placed bleacher seats. Just think - your friends all around

as every ticket includes paddock access and each event features a driver autograph session. One of the nicest fan-friendly “features” is the lack of a crowd. Since spectators can spread around the track, frequently on both sides, there is plenty of elbow room, especially

on the practice and qualifying days. Race lengths vary from 2 3/4 hours to 12 hours, with the driving load shared by 2 to 3 drivers per team. Teams that regularly compete in ALMS events receive special consideration in the selection of the 48-car field for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Tell me more about the cars

I’m sure that you’re al-ready excited to attend, but wait, I haven’t told you about the cars yet. Porsches, Porsches, and more Porsches (yes, there are many others too). The ALMS cars compete in one of four classes, and

all classes are racing at the same time, es-sentially sharing the track. There are two GT classes (GT1, GT2) for production-like cars, and two prototype classes (P1, P2) for the ground-up race cars. The subdivisions within the class types are to further distin-guish cars generally by weight and horse-

power. In 2005, the Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs were the predominate cars in the GT2 class, with an occasional challenge from a Panoz Esperante or two. Corvettes, Saleens, Vipers and a Maserati ran in GT1. There are two prototype classes, P1 and P2. The P1 proto-type class has been dominated in recent years by the Audi R8, which is considered by some to be the most successful prototype sportscar of all time. Other prototype contenders include various Lolas and Courages. ALMS weekends also include various support races. The support races at the 2006 ALMS event at MRLS are scheduled to include the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge (more Porsches) and the Star Mazda Series. Tell me more about the ALMS series. As the name suggests, the races take place in North America, with 9 events in the United States and 1 in Canada. The 2006 season kicks off in March with the Twelve Hours of Sebring (Sebring, Florida) and wraps up in October with a four hour race at MRLS (Monterey, California). The other races include seven that run two hours and forty-five minutes and Petit Le Mans, which is a 1000 mile (or 10 hour) race at Road Atlanta. Several of the races will conclude after dark, including the race at MRLS. This is especially cool for the fans, and I imagine that it’s especially difficult for the drivers. The 2006 ALMS schedule is below.

What’s hot for 2006?

The big news for 2006 is the Porsche

RS Spyder, developed specifically for the P2 class of the ALMS. The RS Spyder was introduced at the final ALMS race of 2005 at MRLS, where it convincingly won the P2 class and finished 5th place overall. Two RS Spyders will be run in 2006 by Penske Motorsports, and the car is planned to be

Also noteworthy, Audi is replacing the R8 with the 5.5L V12 turbo-diesel pow-ered R10, BMW is returning to the series with two M3’s and Lexus is entering the series with two IS 350s. Don’t know who to cheer for? Flying Lizard Motorsports will be competing with a pair of Porsche 911 GT3 RSR’s in the GT2 class. Having completed two very successful seasons, and based at Infineon Raceway, the Flying Lizard teams are the local fan favorites.

Ask Bondo Bob

The Drifter is pleased to announce the inclusion of nationally known automotive adviser “Bondo Bob” to appear in our publication. Bondo Bob can answer those tough questions that come up between Porsche owners and their friends and family. Feel free to ask Bondo Bob any car re-lated question and have those long unanswered situations put to rest. Also, we should all thank our advertising manager, Dick MacFarlane, for arranging this syndication.

DEAR BONDO BOB………. Matt Deter, our SVR competition director, has put together many great events for 2006. When I told my wife of the six or more autocross dates this year she thought I should spend my free time volunteering for the Red Cross, not racing at the autocross. Can you please help me convince Chris the importance to autocross? SIGNED…..Crossed Up

DEAR Crossed Up……. As the Red Cross helps people in need….Auto-cross helps people with speed. I suggest that instead of getting cross with Chris you criss-cross the events and do both. Remember, an unhappy spouse at the end of a full day of racing is not worth it….unless of course you got BTOD….. SIGNED…….Double B
