SPECIAL HELPS FOR PARTY CAKES

To frost and serve large cakes, such as Panda and Snowman (CHILDREN'S PARTIES cards 17, 25) , use a large tray, a plain breadboard or one covered with paper or foil. Or outline the shape of the cake on cardboard and cut around it to make a backing for the cake.

Mix and match cakes and parties. Space Visitors (CHILDREN'S PARTIES card 4) , for instance, can double as ghosts or snowmen. Slice off bottoms to help them stand.

DO'S AND DON'TS FOR HAPPY PARTIES

DO: • Plan the number of guests to correspond roughly to the age of the party child.

• If you feel unsure, ask a friend or older child to help you.

• Give every child a prize of some kind. • Keep menus simple. • Set a definite going-home time. • Smile! Set the mood for the party.

DON'T: • Expect the birthday child to behave perfectly. Excitement runs high!

• Get excited or cross. The memory of a wonderful time will live for years.

LADYBUG CAKE

It's a rock painting party! Cut out invitations in the shape of an artist's palette and find lots of round, smooth rocks, brushes, paints and paper towels. Use the Ladybug Cake as a model and eat it later! The rocks go home with each guest for paperweights or doorstops.

Heat oven to 300°. Grease and flour 11/2 -quart round baking dish. Prepare our pound cake mix as directed on package except -pour batter into baking dish. Bake 1 hour 5 to 10 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool cake 10 minutes; remove from dish. Prepare our fluffy white frosting mix as directed on package.

Place cake flat side down on serving plate or tray. Frost cake. Make face on side of cake, using black gumdrop slices for eyes, red gumdrop slice for nose, red shoestring licorice for mouth and black shoestring licorice for eyebrows and antennae.

For colored shell of ladybug, sprinkle red sugar over cake about 2 inches from curved edge of face. Place black gumdrop slices for spots on shell; use black shoestring licorice for stripe across center of shell.

=<=:) Serve Tinted Milk with the Ladybug Cake. Young artists will Jove it. Brighten each B-ounce glass of milk by adding 1 tablespoon honey and 1 tablespoon grape or orange juice. Stir thoroughly and serve at once.

BRANDED PANCAKES

Western parties are fun for big or little boys. If you can, arrange to rent or borrow a horse or pony and give rides. If not, start with active, outdoor games and relays. When everyone's hungry, each cowboy can put his own special brand on the Branded Pancakes .

2 cups Bisquick baking mix 1 egg

11/J cups milk

Beat all ingredients with rotary beater until smooth. Grease griddle if necessary. Drizzle batter from teaspoon onto hot griddle to form an initial. (Initials must be made backwards to make them appear right when pancakes are served.)

When bottom side of initial is brown, pour about 1/4 cup batter over initial . Turn when bubbles appear. Bake other side until golden brown. About 18 pancakes.

For a hilarious finish, play Wild West Story: Find a cowboy story to read that has lots of action. Arrange chairs in a loose circle. Assign a sound effect ahead of time to each child ("whinny" for horse, "yipee!" for cowboy, "woof" for dog, "whoa" when rider s tops) .

As you read the story, each child gives the sound his character m akes . If you don't mind the commotion, have each child run around his chair every time he ma kes his sound effect.

JUNGLE PARADE CAKE

Make your party a "jungle" with giant flowers, glossy leaves, crepe paper snakes and bunches of real or artificial bananas. Perhaps your guests will create their own cookie-candy animals to put on the cake.

Bake any flavor of our layer cake mixes in 2 layer pans, 9x11/2 inches, as directed on package. Prepare our fluffy white frosting mix as directed on package. Reserve small amount of frosting for making cookie-candy animals; frost cake with remaining frosting.

Decorate top of cake with candles, whole gumdrops and strips of colored gumdrops arranged in spoke-fashion. Decorate sides of cake with cookie-candy animals: Use cookies for bodies and heads. With the reserved frosting, attach marshmallows, cut-up gumdrops, nuts, corn puffs and pretzels to cookies for legs, faces, ears and tails.

=0 Scrambled Animals-a good game for 10- to 11-year-o/ds . Give each player a list of jungle Animals (below) and a pencil. Prepare an answer sheet for yourself (below). First child to finish is the winner. Time limit: about 10 minutes .

Jungle Animals

1. onli (lion) 8. areb (bear) 2. neeltaph (elephant) 9. photopsuimap (hippopotamus) 3. nomyek (monkey) 10. esla (seal) 4. accopek (peacock) 11. almla (llama) 5. lagonimf (flamingo) 12. riffgea (giraffe) 6. seroorinch (rhinoceros) 13. okoranga (kangaroo) 7. grite (tiger) 14. unpinge (penguin)

Bake our orange cake mix in 2 layer pans, 9x11/2 inches, as directed on package. Prepare our lemon fluff frosting mix as directed on package; reserve 1/4 cup frosting. Frost cake with remaining frosting.

Arrange candy corn in circle for the sun on center top of cake. Stir 6 to 7 tablespoons sifted confectioners' sugar into reserved frosting. Tint frosting orange with a drop of red food color. Use Envelope Cone (below) or writing tip to make a face on the sun and signs of the zodiac around edge of cake.

Envelope Cone: Place frosting in envelope; fold sides to make cone. Cut off a tiny corner of envelope for tip. Hold the cone at a 45° angle to write or draw. It's wise to try a few practice strokes on waxed paper.

WORLD CAKE

Cut out invitations in the shape of a globe and ask each child to dress in the cos tume of a special country or be ready to tell about one. Cool cakes 10 minutes; remove from baking dishes. Prepare 2 packages of our fluffy white frosting mix as directed on packages. Tint frosting with few drops blue food color.

Place one cake round side down on plate. If flat side has rounded slightly during baking, slice off thin piece to make level. Frost top with tinted frosting. Cut thin slice from flat side of second cake if necessary. Place flat side down on first cake to make a globe shape. Frost cake with tinted frosting.

Melt 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate and 1 teaspoon butter or margarine over hot water. Remove from heat; blend in 1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar and 1 tablespoon hot water. Beat until smooth. Fill Envelope Cone (CHILDREN'S PARTIES card 5) with chocolate icing; draw outlines of continents on cake. Trim with tiny flags to represent different countries.

TREASURE CHEST CAKE

CHOO CHOO CAKE

Trains are among the first wonders youngsters love! Make a paper carton Jiving room train with engine, caboose and tickets for all. Or take the children to the depot to watch the trains come and go. (Be sure there are enough m others to help keep track of everyone.) Even more exciting is a short ride on the train! When it's time to come hom e and eat, pretend that you are in the dining car.

Heat oven to 350°. Grease and flour 6 loaf pans, 41/2 x21/2X2 inches, and 1 layer pan, 9x11/2 inches. Prepare any flavor of our layer cake mixes as directed on package except-fill each loaf pan 1/2 full with batter; pour remaining batter into layer pan. Invite the children by phone, but pass out actual invitations at going-home time. Spell names backwards on place cards. Schedule the party for late afternoon, but serve these nutritious Breakfast Bars.

CROWN CAKE

Especially for little girls! If it's an after-school party, they can bring their costumes and "dress up" together. Count on their spending most of their time in front of the mirror!

Bake our lemon chiffon cake mix as directed on package. Trim top to make level; place top side up on serving plate.

Prepare our fluffy white frosting mix as directed on package; reserve 1/2 cup frosting. Frost cake with remaining frosting, using up and down strokes of spatula on side of cake and radiating strokes from center to edge on top.

Drop the reserved frosting by spoonfuls around top edge of cake, swirling each into a peak to resemble the point of a crown. Place silver dragees on each point of crown. Press more dragees and slices of colored gumdrops on cake.

==<=:>A guessing game that's fun for young ladies is Ladies in Waiting: Sit in a circle with the children and tell them, "To please the Queen you must bring her a present. If she likes it you can be a lady in waiting.

"If not, you can try again when it is your turn. There is a trick connected with the presents the Queen likes, and if you listen carefully, you will be able to figure it out." The trick is that each person must bring the Queen a present that begins with the same letter as her first name.

Remove figures carefully from waxed paper; place at regular intervals on side of cake. Press birthday candles into gumdrops and place on top of cake.

=0 A lively game, Animals Fly, needs 6 to 15 players standing or sitting in a semicircle around you. Explain that you will call out "Robins fly!" and that everyone m ust then flap his arms like wings. However, you may call out "Elephants fly!" Then no one should wave his arms.

Practice a few times, then begin the game. Any child who "flies" for animals that don't, or vice versa, is out. Call the names fast! The last remaining child is the winner.
