If you were to visit a mathematics class inour schools today, you might see a verydifferent type of math instruction than youremember from your own education.Although today’s math instruction still bearssome resemblance to the workbook andworksheet activities you may remember fromyour past, math classes today involvechildren much more actively in acquiringmathematical concepts through work withmanipulative objects and multiple ways atarriving at solutions to problems.

Over the past five years, the teachers andadministrators of South Western SchoolDistrict have been working to revise ourmath program with the goal of helping ourstudents do a better job of meeting thePennsylvania Standards for Mathematics.These eleven standards, adopted by the stateBoard of Education in 1999, describe whatstudents should know and be able to do atGrades 3, 5, 8, and 11.

Throughout the calendar, we have selectedpictures that show the kinds of activitiesstudents are doing as part of their mathinstruction in the South Western SchoolDistrict. Each picture includes a caption taken directly from the math assessment anchors that were developed by the PennsylvaniaDepartment of Education as a tool for clarifying the state math standards. The pictures included in our calendar reflect one of thefollowing categories:

• Algebraic Concepts

• Data Analysis and Probability
