ALEXANDER THE GREAT: MILITARIST ORCOSMOPOLITAN

This presentation will consider the highly influential view of Alexander The Great by W.W. Tarn, who argued that the famous Macedonian was motivated by a theory of universal humanity, i.e., that he was intent upon operationalizing the humanistic ideals of ancient Cynic and Stoic philosophy. But do Alexander’s military exploits reflect this premise? Was Alexander truly committed to the cultural unification of humankindhumankind or is he best understood as a monomaniacal conqueror driven by an insatiable lust for honor and glory? The lecture will consider the historical, political, and philosophical elements that might lead to an answer.
