Rejuvenation! Rejuvenation! That is the best word I can think of to describe the purpose of the Illinois General Assembly. Over May 6 through 8, eight members of the Kankakee Jaycees traveled to Springfield to attend this momentous occasion. We were hoping to get a couple of awards and some great advice from the Jaycee leadership and share information with other Jaycee chapters. Our rewards were much greater than we had anticipated! Congratulations to the Kankakee Area Jaycees on receiving the following awards. 1. The Outstanding Membership Recruitment Chapter for the First Trimester. 2. The Outstanding Chapter Communications for the First Trimester “Jaycees Lately”
- CPG by Lucinda LaPierre 3. The Outstanding Membership Recruitment Project for the First Trimester “After Hours” - CPG by Becky Hagge 4. The Outstanding Officer for the Month of February: Anne Maticic 5. The Outstanding Officer for the First Trimester, Runner Up: Becky Hagge 6. 8th Place, Parade of Chapters, 1st Trimester (out of 78 chapters) 7. 1st Trimester Vice Presidents’ Cup Nominee (5 chapters in the state were nominated) 8. President’s Honor Pin (Presented by President Joanna Colletti): Becky Hagge, Jeremy Winge, Carol Cademartori, Todd Brack 9. Award of Leadership, Passport to Leadership Phase I Completion: Anne Maticic, Tonia Zens 10. Write Up Competition, Runner Up, Todd Brack 11. Master Recruiter Certificate: Becky Hagge, Carol Cademartori and acknowledgement of Jeremy Winge The weekend was full of great events, starting with Todd, Lucinda, Michelle, and I arriving at the Hilton about 20 minutes before Todd and Lucinda went off to compete in the Write Up Competition! At 10 p.m. we were joined by Anne, Jeremy, Becky, and Andrew and attended our Area 1 Caucus Meeting. At the Caucus we were led by Area 1 VP, Joanne Rinaldo and informed of goings on with the Chapters. At the Caucus I had the pleasure of getting to speak about the Kankakee Jaycees and our membership recruitment ideas and strategies. The evening continued with a mixer and we mingled with our great friends from other chapters around the state. In the morning, each of us attended different trainings. I went to the Local Chapter President’s training, while others went to see featured presenter Matt Booth. Andrew and Becky headed toward their Speak Up Competition. At lunch we had an awards ceremony. The afternoon continued with many in our chapter going to a membership training. Todd, Jeremy, and I went to a special training by Matt Booth. This was a great honor. Matt is a great speaker and gave the three of us some wonderful information that we can apply to both our personal and professional lives. There is no doubt that we will also apply this to the Jaycees. In fact, we loved his training so much that we intend to bring him to the Kankakee Jaycees so that you may all benefit from this experience as well! In the evening we attended the President’s Cocktail Hour where we were able to see the medal ceremony for the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award (TOYP). Following the ceremony we attended the TOYP dinner and awards ceremony. We were introduced to the 10 winners for Illinois for 2010. Most were in attendance. This is a great experience. Nominees range from Special Needs teachers to Olympian Evan Lysacek and Chicago Bear Israel Idonije. If you know someone that you deem worthy of this award, keep him or her in mind for next year, because we can nominate them! Following TOYP we had the Jaycees award ceremony, in which most of the before mentioned awards were given to us. It was great to celebrate our accomplishments and to support and congratulate the other chapters and leaders in the Jaycees on their accomplishments. Following the ceremony we continued the celebration with mixers and parties and a tractor pull! It was a great time! The next morning Lucinda and I attended the Business Meeting. We heard the reports from the President and all Vice Presidents. At this meeting we received five Jaycee yard signs that we can use at events…or in our yards. We earned these by getting ten new members in the month of April! We also received a bottle of Champaign from the President for being at growth for the month of April. –Continued on pg. 2

Rejuvenation!—Continued Congratulations everyone! Whether you were leading a project,
recruiting a member, or simply showed up to a meeting, you
have helped make this organization as great as it is. All of us who
attended the GA have returned home rejuvenated and with a
plan to make our chapter even greater! We need your
contributions to make our plan complete! Small contributions
are just as great. It is all of those small acts that give our chapter
the motivation for success. To hear more about the GA or to get
more involved with the chapter, be sure to come to our
membership meeting this Sunday, May 15 at Aurelio’s on Rte.

Jaycee Spotlight Name: Jeremy Winge Occupation: Student at NIU, Co-Owner ENGAGE Hobbies: When there’s not Jaycees stuff to do the Shriners’ lodge, school, politics, and starting a business have kept me pretty occupied in the last year. When I can I love to read a good book though.
Former/present titles (if you are on the board): 2010 President, 2011
Chairman of the Board, and 2011 State Director
What would be (or is) your dream project? Somewhere in the not too
distant future I would love to see the Kankakee Area Jaycees owning or
co-owning a profitable business and/or having the money to make
strategic investments in the community.
What is something you gained from joining the Jaycees? The Jaycees
has helped me realize more than ever that there are very few things a
small group of determined people can’t accomplish when they’re working
together. Getting real-world experience with that is priceless.
What do you consider to be your best accomplishment (within or outside the Jaycees)? I’m proud of the Kankakee Jaycees overall. There is a very long and rich tradition of Jaycees in Kankakee County. A handful of us have been able to watch the new Kankakee chapter grow from the beginning. It’s been very rewarding to see it come alive and take shape. Every new Jaycee has a new energy and idea and its fun to watch them put it to paper and organize their peers. We have an amazing membership! I can’t wait to see what the chapter looks like in another 6 months or a year. What does being a Jaycee mean to you? To me being a Jaycee means I have the very real ability to impact the community while having fun with a huge group of friends. The organization provides people invaluable opportunities to plan and execute their ideas. I know a few people on the board are going to laugh at this because I say it all the time, but, the Jaycees is an excellent platform to do anything you can dream of. All it takes is an idea, pen, paper, and a little persuasion. I can’t imagine a better organization for adults in this age group.

Create Your Own History On May 6th and 7th, representatives of the Kankakee Area Jaycees
attended the Spring General Assembly along with the normal
crowd of energetic chapters from across the state of Illinois. Now, I
have personally only attended two GAs, and both times I have been
surprised at the unique blend of people that join in on the training,
festivities and assemblies. As I looked around on Saturday night, I
saw many older faces. Hm, I thought to myself, this group of people
must really be pushing 40, more like 60; what could they possibly
be doing hanging out with a young professionals organization? The
simple answer is that there had to be a mix up, we all know from
our grandparents that getting older involves forgetting some
things, losing teeth walking with a cane, etc; CLEARLY these people
had walked into the wrong party (for those of you surprised at my
bluntness, this is called dry humor). Then, quickly and slyly putting
two and two together I realized the elders were dressed in formal
attire, maybe these individuals were part of the program. Eureka!
Those "old people" were all former Jaycees, legends in the
organization that were being forever honored by being put into the
Jaycees Hall of Fame.
The more I participate in this team of young people the more I
learn about the extensive history that this organization holds dear.
The people being honored that night had long since been Jaycees,
working to improve the community and develop young leaders.
Yet, many years later, here they stood with their sons and
daughters and grand kids in front of 200 or so people being
honored for their time in leadership with the Jaycees. That is a
profound statement. The message is this, the things that you do
today will affect you tomorrow, either positively or negatively.
Being a part of the Jaycees is an opportunity for individuals to leave
a truly positive history moving forward in life. Some will be
remembered by many, but ALL will be remembered, make it a
positive memory!

Deal with the Devil…. or just VP Geno
A few weeks ago several of us had the opportunity to visit the Peoria Jaycees International Beer Fest. The
event was incredibly impressive and sparked an interest with several of the Kankakee Jaycees in
attendance. However, the story comes from running into VP “Geno” Gene Kaleta while we were there.
President Carol and I found ourselves making a few wagers on behalf of the Kankakee Jaycees.
To win one of the bets we need:
• 9 visitations to other chapters meetings or events by August
• 8 First-timers at the September GA (September 9-12)
• 6 competitors at the September GA
Now no one loves a good bet more than me, especially when we’re betting on the Kankakee Jaycees! You
may be asking, “what do we win or lose’?
If we are not able to make this happen I have to dress in drag at the GA and sing “It’s raining men”, have
three signs made saying Kankakee Loves VP Geno, and wear a shirt saying something similar.
WHEN WE WIN, VP Geno will bring a half -gallon of his famous Apple Pie drink to a GM, and wear a shirt
at the awards ceremony saying KANKAKEE is the BEST. For the few who might be excited to see me as a
woman, when we win I will dress up in Drag for our October Meeting at Brickstone to ensure no playful
sabotage.
We’ve got this one in the bag! TOO EASY!
Jeremy Winge--State Director
Deal with the Devil Part II A couple of weeks ago Becky, Todd, Jeremy, and I went to the Peoria Jaycees International Beer Fest.
What a great event Peoria! They did an outstanding job! While we were there we met with State VP Gene
Kaleta. He decided to make a deal with Jeremy and I. Luckily, we are both competitive people, so we
embraced this deal whole-heartedly. I am really glad we were presented with these challenges; I was
already motivated to make our chapter the best we could, but with specific goals in mind, I will be much
more driven.
I, President Carol, of the Kankakee Jaycees, must do the following for the 2nd Trimester. 1. Turn in a total
of 12 CPGs, one from each commission. 2. Recruit 10 new members. 3. Be at growth, +2 for the 2nd
Trimester. 3. Conduct a project to raise funds for Relay for Life. 4. Conduct a project to raise funds for a
Diabetes foundation. 5. Enroll 20 new Jaycees in Passport to Leadership. 6. Compete in the Masters Speak
Up at the September GA.
If I win, VP Gene will come to Kankakee and cook an Italian cuisine for our board and conduct a Super 7
training. He will also come to our Dr. Ben Carson event, and bring 5 people with him to be volunteers for
our event.
If I lose, I have to go to the GA as Geno’s personal assistant. I have to carry a pad and paper, with glasses
at the end of my nose and my hair in a bun. I also have to carry around a life-size dummy dressed to
epitomize Geno with me throughout the GA. I have to wear a t-shirt, except to formals, that says “I am a
VP Kaleta wannabe.” Every time Geno is introduced I have to lead a chant saying, “Kankakee loves VP
Kaleta!”
If any of you ever get the opportunity to take on a bet with Geno, I would highly recommend it; just be
prepared! I will be winning this bet, so get ready Kankakee! I’m motivated to get a lot done and I will
need your help!

Membership Outreach This year is going by so fast and we have a lot of exciting things going on
in the chapter! In order to continue to grow as people and as an
organization it is important that we keep connected to our members and
encourage them to reach their potential. In an effort to engage and
mentor members, we are conducting a membership outreach project.
All board members and 3rd degree general members will be randomly
assigned general members to call regularly to invite them to projects,
encourage them, mentor them through Passport to Leadership, and help
address any concerns or requests. We truly have amazing members and
would love to see each person succeed in the Jaycees and in life. We are
committed to making our chapter great and in turn changing not only
our own lives but the lives of those around us! If you have any questions
about the project or do not want to be called, please contact Lucinda

Learning to Lead Across The second step in becoming a 360 degree leader is learning to lead across. To lead across in 360 degree leadership means reaching out to peers and coworkers and leading them to the benefit of an organization. There are seven principals to master in leading across. The principles are: building relationships, completing fellow leaders ahead of competing with the team, be a friend, avoid office politics, expand your circle of acquaintances, let the best idea win, and don’t pretend that you are perfect. In building relationships, John Maxwell outlines several suggestions to complete what he calls a leadership loop. To complete this loop a leader must do several things. First, the leader must care and take interest in those people that they’re trying to lead. Once a genuine interest is developed learning about peers and appreciating them are the next two steps. Add value to those around you as well as verbalizing affirmation of peers and coworkers. The last step in building relationships is leading and influencing the group. Once all of these steps have been taken the leadership loop is complete with the final step being succeeding with people. The next step of leading across is completing fellow leaders ahead of competing with the team. Maxwell acknowledges that competition is a natural desire. However, he suggests to embrace healthy competition but know where to draw the line. It is okay to help others develop themselves instead of competing with them. When a leader wishes to lead-across it is necessary to be a friend. To be a friend one must: be available, listen, find common ground, and be honest. Friendship, according to 360 degree leadership, is the foundation of influence, framework for success, and a shelter against storms. Avoiding office politics is the next principle to lead-across. Avoiding politics requires a person to avoid petty arguing and gossip. Also, it is important to show integrity and say what you mean and mean what you say in the office. By looking at all sides of a situation and standing up for what is right is also a good way to avoid politics in the office. When leading across it is recommended to expand the circle of acquaintances that you have. The reasoning behind this is that the more people you know the more people that you will have the opportunity to become friends with and complete the leadership loop with. Look past inner circles and prejudices and expand your acquaintances. When brainstorming in groups listen to all ideas that are presented. Do not let personality over-shadow a good idea. If an idea is rejected do not take the rejection personally. If you can look in unusual places for ideas and not settle for just one idea then you are acting on another principle of leading across. You are letting the best idea win! Finally, a good leader will not pretend that they are perfect. When leading across ask for advice, put away pride, learn from others, and admit your faults. Chances are that your peers already know what your weaknesses are. If you are able to embrace them and own up to your faults you will be respected for that. Todd Brack—Community VP

New Member Orientation Are you wanting to know more about what the Jaycees
organization is all about? We have a great opportunity for you!
Kathy Crick, National Jaycee Vice President and last year's
Illinois President is coming to town! Kathy helped us get started
as an organization and she is now coming to conduct a New
Member Orientation. This is great for those of you who have
joined within the past six months or even those who just
haven't had the chance to get involved. Training is on Monday
May 16, 2011. The training starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Recreation
Station in Bradley. We will be meeting in the gym, so come
ready to have some fun and get a great training. Please feel free
to bring a friend. Food and drinks will be provided.
YOU MATTER!!!
You matter! These two words should mean so much to each of us.
You need to make sure you are taking care of yourself first. By
taking care of ourselves, we are able to focus more on our family,
friends, work, the Jaycess, etc, in return creating better
relationships! Until this past weekend, I never realized how
important those two little words really are. Have you ever seen the
girl, Mikayla, in the Donate Life commercials, with Walter Payton's
daughter; I love the quote they say because it is so true. "To the
world you are one person, but to one person you are the world." I
now wear a bracelet that says "You Matter", just so when I start to
lose focus, it helps remind me that I matter to someone or
something, and it reinforces my importance, focus, and goals in this
world. So, no matter what happens or how down you may feel, YOU
MATTER!!!

GIFTED HANDS: THE BEN CARSON STORY
Presented by ENGAGE and the Kankakee Area Jaycees
Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up
in a single parent home and being challenged by dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible
temper and low self-esteem appeared to preclude the realization of that dream, until his
mother, with only a third-grade education, challenged her sons to strive for excellence. He
is now the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at John’s Hopkins. In 1987, Dr. Carson
completed his first separation of Siamese twins that were joined at the head. He has been
named by CNN and TIME magazine as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and
scientist. US News & World Report and Harvard named Dr. Carson as one of America’s Best
Leaders. Dr. Carson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor.
The movie “Gifted Hands” premiered on TNT and was nominated for Best Television Movie.
“Gifted Hands” was the winner of the Epiphany Prize for Best Television Movie and the
NAACP Image Award Winner of Outstanding Television Movie, Mini-Series, or Dramatic
Special.

Thank you to the Lombard Jaycees—Nicholas Smith, Christina Regina and Gina Trenkamp for attending our April GM, for the friendly wagers, and the great friendships! We look forward to working with you and your chapter! Thank you to ALL the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces! This Memorial Day we remember those who have fought for our freedom in the past and those who fight for it now! We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday weekend!
