    ORNAMENTAL METAL &

    FABRICATION

    PART 1: GENERAL

    1.01 SECTION INCLUDES

    A. The contractor shall supply all materials and labor required to complete the work illustratedin these drawings and written specification.

    1. Ornamental metal columns .

    2. Ornamental fences and gates.

    3. Special metal figures and shapes.

    4. Miscellaneous framing and supports not specified in other Sections. To include:

    a). Tree grate cover support framing and other items as shown on the drawings.

    b). Concrete paver edge restraints at tree well understory and planters.

    c). Sidewalk drain cover plats and supports.

    B. All items of metal construction and related accessories required for the project and which arenot specified elsewhere. Such items include, but are not limited to:

    1. Tube and plate stock: Light standard

    2. Welding and splicing

    3. Grinding, cleaning and preparation for finish

    4. Special isolating gaskets, grommets

    1.04 SUBMITTALS & SHOP DRAWINGS

    A. Shop drawings shall include all information necessary for the fabrication of the componentparts of the structure. They shall indicate size and weight of members, type and location ofshop and field connections, the type, size and extent of all welds, and the welding sequencewhen required. The welding symbols used on the shop drawings shall be as adopted by theAmerican Welding Society.

    1. Indicate types and grades of all metal used.

    2. Indicate relationship to adjacent construction (columns and walls).

    3. Sufficient technical data to demonstrate compliance with the specified requirements;

    4. Complete Shop Drawings showing all members, proposed cuts, connections camber,holes, and similar data.

    5. Provide certified mill reports on steel.

    6. Indicate splices and splicing methods.

    7. Anchorage and accessory items.

    B. Submit samples of each finished steel shape, size and color of an appropriate size to the

    Landscape Architect or Citys Representative. Assemble one set of samples with requiredwelds or fasteners, to demonstrate fitting. Do not fabricate steel until samples and shopdrawings are approved. Contractor to provide full size graphic log plasma cut for reviewand approval.

    C. Manufacturers Literature: Submit Manufacturers literature, data sheets, productdescriptions and specifications for all items.

    D. Installation Information: Setting diagrams, erection plans, templates and directions forinstallation and preparation of backing plates, anchors, and similar items.

    E. Certificates and Qualifications Procedures: Welders qualification procedures andcertificates for each welder, welding operator and tacker.

    G. See Sections 01330 Shop Submittal Procedures.

    1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE

    A. Use adequate numbers of skilled workmen who are thoroughly trained and experienced inthe necessary crafts and who are completely familiar with the specified requirements andthe methods needed for proper performance of the work of this Section.

    B. Perform welding with electric arc process and in accordance with AWS "Code for Arch and

    Gas Welding in Building Construction".C. Work shall be performed by a fabricator knowledgeable with the materials, equipment, and

    procedures specified herein and with a minimum of (5) years of experience with customfabrication

    D. In addition to complying with pertinent codes and regulations, comply with:

    1. AISC "Specifications for Design, Fabrication, and Erection of Structural Steel forBuildings";

    2. AISC "Code of Standard Practice";

    3. AISC "Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts."

    1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

    A. Delivery and Storage:

    1. Deliver materials to the job site properly marked to identify the location for which theyare intended.

    2. Use marking corresponding to markings shown on the approved Shop Drawings.

    3. Store in a manner to maintain identification and prevent damage, off the ground, using

    pallets or other supports, and to permit easy access for inspection.B Product Handling: Deliver steel to site or shop with identification tags securely wired into

    place. Store steel to prevent damage and protect from corrosion and deformation.

    C. Hot-Dip Galvanizing: The Fabricator is responsible for preparing all items to be hot-dipgalvanized.

    D. Welding Qualifications: Welding procedures shall be in accordance with AWS D 1.1.Welders, welding operators and tackers shall be qualified in accordance with AWS D 1.1

    1.07 APPROVED FABRICATOR AND PAINTER

    A. Fabricator: Company specializing in custom metal fabrication of a nature similar to thefeatures specified in this section with a minimum 5 years of documented experience.

    The following fabricator has been pre-approved to fabricate and install the work underthis Section(or approved equa)l.

    C. Rejection of fabrication and/or painting subcontractor:

    The landscape architect reserves the right to reject a fabrication or painting subcontractor ifthey do not exhibit the basic qualifications, terms, and conditions as outlined in thespecifications that specify minimum experience and certifications. or are deemed to nothave enough experience with projects of a similar size and scope as is being bid.

    1.08 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

    A. Stipulated Price(Lump Sum): The Contract is a Stipulated Price Contract, payment forlabor, materials, and all miscellaneous costs required as part of the work required in thisSection is included in the total Stipulated Price.

    PART 2 - PRODUCTS

    2.01 MATERIALS:

    A. Provide the following where called for on the drawings or otherwise required.B. Rolled steel plates and bars: Comply with ASTM A36.C. Tubular Steel: Comply with ASTM A500 Grade B; ASTM A501.D. Structural Steel: ASTM 500, clean and free from rust, scales, or coating that will reduce

    bond. Steel shall conform to dimensional requirements, straightness, and flatness of face.

    E. Structural Steel: ASTM 500, clean and free from rust, scales, or coating that will reducebond. Steel shall conform to dimensional requirements, straightness, and flatness of face.

    F. Machine bolts: Comply with ASTM A307, grade A, and ANSI B18.2, with square and/orhexagonal heads as selected by the Contractor.G. Arc welding electrodes: Comply with ASTM A233, E70XX series, as required for

    conditions of intended use.

    H. Galvanizing (after fabrication) A123, A386.I. Primer: Use approved epoxy based primer suitable for use on Galvanized metalJ. Grommets and Gaskets:

    1.The Contractor shall fabricate and/or furnish neoprene or similar grommets for all boltconnections, completely isolating any metal-to-metal contact between bolts and flanges(or supports).

    K. Fasteners:1.Furnish all bolts, nuts, screws, clips, washers and any other fastenings necessary for proper

    erection of items specified herein. For Ferrous Metal, use stainless steel or galvanized onexterior.

    L. Welding Electrodes:1. Company with AWS D1.1 "Structural Welding Code - Steel" for parent materials to be

    joined.

    2. Electrodes for various welding processes shall be as specified below:a). SMAW: E70XX Low Hydrogen

    b). SAW: F7X - EXXX

    c). GMAW: ER70S -X

    d). FCAW: E7XT -X

    PART 3 - EXECUTION

    3.01 FABRICATION

    A. Shop fabrication and assembly:

    1. Fabricate items of misc. steel in accordance with AISC specifications and as shown on theapproved Shop Drawings.

    2. Where finishing is required, complete the assembly, including welding of units, before startof finishing.

    3. Provide finish surfaces of members exposed in the final structure free from markings, burrs,and other defects.

    B. Assemble and weld built-up sections by methods which will produce true alignment of axeswithout warp.

    C. Graphic Logos:

    1. Graphic logo elements shall be plasma cut with a computer controlled cutting devicecapable of cutting steel up to in thickness in one pass.

    2. Clean ends of metal piece to remove burrs and slag to provide a smooth rounded edge.

    3. Graphic logos shall be made out of stainless steel to a thickness indicated on the Drawingsand with a light buffed finish.

    4. Stainless steel plate overlays shall be spot welded from the backside of main panel and

    ground or wire brushed to provide a contrasting pattern and texture from that of the maingraphic logo.

    5. Graphic logo elements shall be welded to the solid, vertical fence pieces or attachmentmethod as approved by Landscape Architect or Citys Representative.

    D. Utilize approved plasma weld machine for cutting and punching holes and other ornamentalfeatures.

    E. All welding slag and burrs shall be removed prior to deliver to the galvanizer.

    3.02 GALVANIZING

    A. Structural steel: Rolled shapes, plates, bars, strips, and other miscellaneous steel membersshall be hot-dip galvanized after fabrication, in accordance with ASTM A123, or latest edi-tion. Bolts, nuts, embedded items, and other hardware shall be galvanized in accordance withASTM A153, or latest edition..

    B. For structures that are designed for shop-welded or bolted fabrication and bolted erection,individual members in each assembly shall, when possible, be galvanized in a single dip. The

    edges of tightly contacting surfaces shall be completely sealed by welding. Pinholes in weldswill not be permitted. Details of galvanizing shall conform to ASTM A385, latest edition:"Providing High Quality Zinc Coatings on Assembled Steel Products".

    C. All Metal structures shall have the above referenced galvanized primer.

    D. Ornamental fences and gates shall be galvanized prior to painting.

    3.03 SHOP PAINTING

    A. Thoroughly clean galvanized steel or aluminum, removing all loose mill scale, grease, dirt,and foreign matter.

    B. All metals shall be sandblasted or chemically treated with a materials suitable for treatinggalvanized prior to applying an epoxy based paint.

    C. Contractor shall mask all edges and surfaces of the stainless steel panels so as not to overspraythe primer or final paint coat. Contractor shall buff out any paint overspray marks on thestainless steel panels.

    D. Apply the specified epoxy based primer to a dry film thickness not less than 1.5 mils.

    E. Apply primary coat in two applications of a high quality epoxy system paint to a dry filmthickness not less than 3.0 mils. All first coat to become hand slick prior to applying secondcoat.

    F. Apply an approved epoxy based, clear top coat sealant.

    G. Painting finishes shall be applied with an appropriate spray gun.

    1. Gun shall be adjusted to approximately 55-65 psi for siphon, gravity or pressure feedsystems(adjust pot pressure to 5-10 psi for 8-15 fluid ounces per minute delivery)

    2. For pressure/siphon feed, apply 1-2 coats at a distance of 8-10 inches. Spray to hiding.ForHVLP, apply 1 full wet coat with 50% overlap.

    3.04 WORKMANSHIP

    A. General Requirements

    1. Verify all measurements at job. Size and prepare all existing conditions map for all

    fabrication shop drawings.

    2. Coordinate all metal work with adjoining work for details of attachment, fittings, etc. Doall cutting, shearing, drilling, punching, threading, tapping, etc. required for the work orfor attachment of adjacent work. Drill or punch holes; do not use cutting torch, except forprecision cutting of plated steel for ornamental structures. Shearing and punching shallleave true lines and surfaces.

    3. Splicing of structural members is prohibited without prior approval of Architect/City, whowill approve final location and type of splice. Any member having a splice not shownand detailed on shop drawings will be rejected.

    4. Use fabrication jigs for all standard pieces, capable of firmly holding all pieces survivingthe welding operation.

    5. All bends shown on the drawings shall be precision-made, without kinks or visible orstructural defects.

    6. Set all work plumb, true, rigid and neatly trimmed out.

    7. Where items must be incorporated or built into adjacent work, deliver to trade responsiblefor such work in sufficient time that progress of work is not delayed. Be responsible forproper location of such items.

    B. Welding

    1. Perform all welding in accordance with AWS code.

    2. Welds shall be made only by operators experienced in performing the type of work in-dicated.

    3. Cut "V" grooves in material to be butt-welded.

    4. Welds normally exposed to view in the finished work shall be uniformly made and shallbe ground smooth.

    5. Seal weld in all pieces, to prevent penetration by moisture. This shall include all exposedtube ends.

    3. 05 FIELD CHANGES

    A. Field changes to a galvanized surface shall be held to a minimum. In the event of fieldwelding, the following procedure must be followed:

    1. The zinc must be removed from the weld area prior to welding, to prevent zinc penetra-tion of the weld and subsequent cracking.

    2. After welding, the affected area shall be water washed to remove salts, and wire brushedto remove welding slag and other foreign material.

    3. "Drygalv", "Galvanox", or an approved equal shall be applied over the affected area, inaccordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
