As a result of a statutorychange that the bishops approved at their previous meetinglast November, for the first timein the history of the NCOB theapostolic delegate in the UnitedStates, Archbishop, Jean Jadot, was invited to join in the deliberations. He did not, however, have a right to vote on any motions - a right reserved by general Church law to members ofthe national hierarchy.

A planned statement on American Catholic history was removed from the agenda beforethe meeting.

In the course of the meetinganother action document, suggesting guidelines for diocesanvocations offices, was also withdrawn - on the grounds thatthe bishops' vocations commit·

-Suggested that when theVatican revises the rites for admission to candidacy and ordination of deacons, for married deacons it should incorporate formal affirmation and consent to thedeacon's ministry by his wifeand family.

More than 200 of the nation'sbishops attended the three-daymeeting - including three newbishops-elect who had beennamed auxiliary bishops of New-

Couldn't SleepIn a brief interview, the

Cardinal said he "couldn'tsleep all week" in theaftermath of a widely publicizedBoston newspaper interview inwhich he said people in SouthBoston were "not learning theprinciples of true Christian living" and that 80 percent of theCatholics of the area did notattend Mass.

"I was wrong, and 1 hurt themterribly," he said, ascribing hiscomments to fatigue and anger.

Asked what Catholics of thisdiocese might do to support theCardinal, who grew to man·hood in Fall River after emigrating from St. Michael's.Azores as a teenager he askedfor prayers "for all of us, againstinjustice and for all the poor."

He also indirectly alluded tothe South Boston situation inthe course of his homily at St.Stanislaus.

Noting that the parish patronwas also a bishop, the Cardinalsaid, "I have tried so desperatelyto be a good shepherd and havefailed so many times that 1 findit good to be here and imploregrace through St. Stanislaus."

On Sunday, the Cardinal celebrated Mass at St. Michael's

. Church, Fall River, where heserved as assistant and pastor.

CHICAGO (NC) - As a resultof their spring meeting hereMay 4-6, in the future the U. S.bishops can be expected to placemore emphasis on Catholic education, evangelization, doctrinalconcerns, programs promotingholiness, broader consultation, more pastoral research, and thedevelopment of shared responsibility.

During the meeting the bishopsalso:

-Issued a statement chargingthat many of the elderly in American society suffer denial oftheir basic rights because of social attitudes and policies, andurging substantial social changeto correct injustices;

-Passed a resolution urgingthe American people to learn theissues and candidates and parti-

The Mass, for which the smallchurch was crowded to thedoors, and admission was byticket only, was termed the mostimportant event in parish history by Father Kaszynski. Parishioners wore Polish costumesfor the occasion and the sanctuary was decorated with flowersin the Polish national colors of

Most of the Catholic PressConvention focused on the financial binds that Catholic andProtestant media must face. TheCPA voted to poll members onincreasing dues up to 10 percentin each of the next three years.

At earlier sessions of the jointconvention of the Catholic PressAssociation and the AssociatedChurch 'press, editors exchangedviews on advertising and editorial problems, politics in an election year, methods to reach anestimated 80 million unchurchedAmericans.

The only item of major controversy during the joint convention was a resolution proposedby Msgr.- Salvatore J. Adamo, executive editor of the CatholicStar Herald of Camden, N.J. requesting the CPA's support for.Rev. Edward Byington, formereditor of The Anchor.

The vote, without proposedamendments mentioning BishopCronin or requesting. a board ofinquiry, was passed 33Y2 to 9.

The monsignor's resolutionpraised Father Byington for"courage, sacrifice and determination in upholding freedom ofthe press in accordance with thefinest trarlitions of the Catholicpress." Msgr. Adamo warnedthat bishops would censor editors "more and more often" unless the association took astrong stand.

Rev. Barry R. L. Connerton ofthe Providence (R.I.) Visitor distributed documentation andnews stories about the disputeand said the priests' senate ofFall River and other East Coasteditors urgently wanted the CPAto speak out on the' issue.

ing opinions to the contrary, poll results often do help an organization or particular group tofocus and re-channel its effortsto meet the needs of the nowand the crisis of'the tomorrow.

One such undertaking by theGallup Poll is an examination of

a new report on the status of religion in the United States. In arecent address on this topic,George Gallup Jr. unfoldedmany startling trends and somevery interesting facts concerningthe Catholic Church in America. For example, in this country atthe present time there are some80 million unchurched Americans. As far as American Catholics are concerned, Gallup findings indicated that 11 million ofthem do not belong to a parish, that 12 million feel that their reoligious beliefs are not very important to them and that closeto 19 million do not attendchurch on a regular basis.

Conceding the size of theCatholic Church in the UnitedStates, close to 50 million nominal adherents, these figureswould certainly correspond towhat most parishes reflect ontheir own comparative basis. Asone priest recently stated," thedays of playing the numbersgame are over."

For far too long has theChurch in the United States centered its efforts on quantity, notquality. This of course is butanother reflection on the factthat the Church of America hasbeen an immigrant church. Americans in general, while wiseand knowing in many areas oflife are as the report reflects"spiritual illiterates," indicatinga great gap between belief andpractice.

Nevertheless, Gallup is optimistic. He feels that Americans ingeneral are still the most religious people in the world. He isencouraged by American youthand their continued high level ofreligious belief. Given the lackof leadership in the nation, American youth still have the idealsof improving society, voluntaryservice and a hunger for thetranscendent.

There can be little doubt thatthe Church as usual has herwork cut out for her. However, she has many exciting new toolsthat are beginning to bear fruitand encourage optimism. Thework and prayers of suchgroups as the Marriage Encounter Movement, the CharismaticRenewal and the Cursillo Movement are beginning not only tobring back the uninterested butalso are renewing the spirituallife of the Church on all levels. And amid the chaos of public education Catholic schools have become a refuge from the stormof social permissiveness. Thisyear the number of seminariansstudying for the priesthood hasincreased. The restoration of thepermanent diaconate has addeda new dimension to the witnessof the Church of service.

While the Church must stillbe concerned with numbers andseek out th'e lost sheep, there isgreat hope and optimism thatthe Spirit of the Church in allits dimensions is beginning oncemore to revive and renew thepeople of this nation. It is another setback for the prophets ofdoom who in no small way contributed the problems theChurch now faces in the UnitedStates.

An abandoned house . . . shattered windows . . .black emptiness inside . . . weeds outside . . . a silentreminder of the past.

How much living that old house sheltered! ...How many parties. . . How much laughter . . . howmany tears. . . It knew years of love . . . and years offrustrations and challenges . . . How much joy andpeace? ... Who can tell?

The people who lived there have long moved ...perhaps are long dead... The house remains to conjureup images of life past . . . and to remind us whose lifeis so present . . . that our present . . . will one dayalso become the past.

- The shattered glass . . . weather-worn wood . . .symbolize the transitoriness 0 flife... The very endurance of that old house . . . seems to emphasize howquickly human lives change.

Its quiet presence . . . stirs unsettling questionsabout how we live our present lives. . . "What am Ireally living for?" . . . "What is really important in mypresent life?" ... or, as Jesus put it ... "What profitdoes a man show ... who gains the whole world ...and destroys himself in the process? . . . What can aman offer ... in exchange for his life?" (Mark 8:36-37)

During this election year we will once again hearmention of the Gallup Poll. Many think such polls and theiraffliate organizations devote their time and efforts onlyto politics or television. This is a limited view. With thecomplexities of life morethan abundant in America, many organizations use thetalents and resources of organizations such as the GallupPoll to aid and direct their efforts in the fulfillment of theirsocial objectives. All too often a person feels himself getting closer tothe razor's edge of despair. All too often family and friendssee something untoward happening to a relative or friend. And already existing facilities are so strained that there isnowhere to tum.

The present proposal could be of great value.

Progressive - TraditionalBritain is in the midst of an economic crisis. But Britain is also in the midst of an education crisis.A prestigious report has just come out indicating that

in a comparison study bet~een so-called traditional schoolsand so-called progressive schools, the students in the traditional schools scored better in reading and arithmeticand scored about the same in creative writing, an areawhere the progressive school was thought to be vastlysuperior.

Educators the world over are studying the report andtrying to come to conclusions about it.

No one wants to return to an unbending rigidity inthe classroom of old. No one wants to go so inflexibly bythe book that students become robots and the teacher isa martinet.

The progressive system has indeed pointed out thevalue of a cordial atmosphere for learning. It has pointedout how some pupils work quite well when given directionand allowed to proceed at their own pace and under theinfluence of their own inclinations.

But it would appear that there is still the need for ageneral setting of learning and this demands an elementof structure.

Students have to know that someone is in charge. Asone educator and philosopher has noted - school is anunequal society; there are those who kn.ow and those whodon't.

Students have to know that a certain amount of workis expected of them. And for this they will be held accountable. Perhaps this sounds a little harsh, but the society inwhich they will live and work sets up the same demands. And the penalties for failing in this society are usuallymuch harsher than repeating a test or staying after schoolfor another learning session.

Douglas Woodruff cautioned years ago that there mustbe great care not to mistake the packaging for the contents. In many instances, the packaging of the progressive educational system in its radical sense looked very attractive,so attractive that the emphasis was put on the appearancesand not enough attention was given to the contents.

Now it would appear that the desired aim is somewherein between-as it so often is: use the techniques of cordiality and challenge and adventure presented by the progressive system, but keep sight of the purposes of education, theachievement goals, of the traditional system.

And always realize that the teacher and his/her skilland dedication keep the vital element in education, mindworking with and upon mind, person working with andupon person.

grown and lush is an affront tothe eye, but maintaining a neat, busy garden is also a difficulttask.

In The Kitchen'While the role of women is

decidedly changing, I don't findinterest in cooking waning, infact I find it increasing. Moreand more, both women and menare finding that good cookingcan be a creative art that canbring a great deal of satisfactionand pleasure, as well as goodeating.

When I read of a woman whonever enters the kitchen I feela little bit sorry for her becauseI think cooking can be relaxingas well as an endless source ofcuriosity and joy. Certainly thisdoesn't apply to the daily cooking of meals that many have toattend to after a hard day ofwork. This is necessity, not particularly fun. The fun comes, Ibelieve, when" we have the timeto plan a special meal, a specialrecipe, and do it under unrushedconditions.

When planning a special mealI begin at least a week in advance, take out a bunch of backissues of Gourmet and set towork planning the menu. Manythings dictate this choice, thesize of the group to be served, the season of the year (what isgoing to be available in thestores must be considered) andwhether it is going to be a buffet or a sit-down meal.

After the menu is chosen, Iwrite out my shopping list, taking into consideration what is already on my shelf, what I'll haveto buy and where to get it.There is no use looking longingly at a standing rack of lamb ifyou know of no butcher in townthat can order it-be realistic! While I'm a great last-minutedoer, I do try not to plan anylast minute shopping the day I'mhaving people over for dinner. That day I want to stay in mykitchen.

Things are jumping in the garden now and the spell ofhot weather we had not too far back has quickened thepace of the growth in the garden. Now that the early springgarden has passed we have the problem of containing perennials so that the gardendoes not look too lush andovergrown. This is not toomuch of a problem in a border garden but in a large opentype like ours, one has to tryto keep it from looking too busy.

Out of necessity we have

Special M'ealClook, Serve

learned to cut perennials backimmediately after they bloom. For instance, now is the time toprune forsythia. This serves adouble purpose by allowing thegardener to shape the bushesas he wishes and at the sametime reduces the amount ofgrowth in the garden. I like tolet forsythia bloom in gracefulsweeps of the branches. Thisweek I cut out a great deal oflast year's growth right backto the main branch, thus allowing for fewer branches but withgreater length and good positioning for overall effect.

Avoid 'Jungle'Spring groundcovers such as

arabis and basket-of-gold canalso be cut back to keep themwithin bounds prior to theirsummer's growth. Otherwisethey tend to spread too quicklyand take up too much room. Wealso watch the spring bulbsvery carefully and remove thefoliage as soon as it begins towilt. By constantly pruning outor cutting back plants that havebloomed, one has at least achance of keeping the gardenfrom taking on the look of atropical jungle.

Right now we are awaitingthe opening of the poppies andthe iris. They will carry thegarden for the next few weeksbefore the roses come into theirown. But all of these are relatively tall plants and they tendto overwhelm the garden untilthey and the annuals and tallerperennials make a bloom showing. Immediately after bloomingthe iris will be divided andstarted in new beds while manyof the California poppies willhave their foliage removed, leaving the tap root in the groundfor next year.

We are constantly attempting to keep a balance betweencontinual bloom and an attractive garden. One that is over-

CONVENTION HIGHLIGHTS: Top, opening Mass, with Bishop Gerrard as principalcelebrant; center, offertory procession at children's liturgy; bottom, from left, Rev. PatrickJ. to the present, where they say."Isn't there going to be moreafter this?"

The Religious of the Cenaclesaid there are many reasons whyadults are realizing their needof continuing religious education: teens challenge their parents, young parents' appetitesare whetted by sacrament preparation classes, and Catholiccollege graduates are learning"that's there's always more toknow."

Importance of Adults"We used to think," said Sis

ter Marion, "that religious education ended when a youngperson had been prepared forconfirmation. No. we feel ourgoal is the development of themature, living faith of the adult.Only the adult, after all, is capable of appreciating all aspectsof faith."

Noting that Jesus blessed children, but commissioned adultsto "teach and bear witness," theeducator stressed that only inongoing adult education programs is true depth achieved."We shouldn't give people thesame thing over and over.

She listed several ways inwhich the teaching of adults differs from instructing children.Stressing that adult leaders"can't be bossy," she noted that"teaching by decree keeps people in intellectual. diapers."

Working with adults is reallysharing a learning experience, explained Sister Marion, statingthat it is important to draw onthe accumulated wisdom of adultstudents. "Adults are not waiting to be molded as a teachermight wish. They're responsiblethemselves for the major part oftheir ongoing education."

Adding to the "lifetime learning" emphasis of the convention,Rev. Michel G. Methot notedthat a representative for adulteducation has just been namedto the U. S. Catholic ConferenceDepartment of Education. Thomas J. Tewey will make recommendations to the departmentfor furtherance of adult education and will provide services todiocesan education programs. He will also monitor federal, state and denominational adulteducation services and will represent the Catholic Conferenceat national organizations in thefield.

Broader Adult GoalsFather Methot commented

that the goals of adult educationwere strongly supported at a national conference of diocesan directors held last month in Boston, at which those in attendance"were challenged repeatedlytoward a virtual moratorium ontraditional CCD programs infavor of broader adult goals."

The emergence of such goals,as well as the maintenance ofservices to children and youth, was recognized at the Fall Riverconvention.

,Le,arning Never EndsEducation as a process begin

ning at birth and continuingthrough life was the theme ofthe 21st annual Catholic Education Convention, held last weekat Bishop Feehan High School,Attleboro, for classroom and religious education teachers of thediocese.

Rev. Patrick J. Farrell of theDepartment of Education of theU. S. Catholic Conference, a keynote speaker, reminded theteachers of their significant influence on the shape of things tocome, in that they are preparing"citizens of the 21st century."He said that Catholic schoolscan offer "spirituality, a senseof wholeness and community"to their students, and that theyshould provide a climate of trustfrom which young people cango forth to serve the world.

Dr. Mildred F. Jefferson, president of the National Right toLife Committee, and the majorspeaker for the convention's$econd day, urged religious toinvolve themselves in the prolife struggle and told .teachersespecially that they should prepare children with "strong defenses" against the arguments ofabortionists. High school is toolate, she declared; children mustbe taught in the primary grades.

Convention MassesThe convention opened with a

liturgy at which Bishop James J.Gerrard was principal celebrantin the absence of Bishop DanielA. Cronin. It closed with a deHghtful rainbow-themed children's liturgy presented by students of St. Mary-Sacred HeartSchool, North Attleboro. Thosein attendance received copies ofthe liturgy for use, if desired, inschools or parishes.

Msgr. Patrick J. O'Neil, director of the Diocesan Departmentof Education, said the annualmeeting was notable for the increased number of religious education teachers in attendance. Also stressed this year was theincreasingly realized importanceof educating Catholic adults, andseveral workshops spoke to thisconcern.

Rev. Roger E. Racine, directorof continuing education for theWorcester diocese, explored approaches to "total parish religious education," discussing experimental programs now inparish use. And Rev. Maurice J.O'Connor presented a familyparish religious education program developed by the PaulistPress to involve all age levelsin study of basic themes.

On the second day of the COll

vention Sister Marion O'Connorof the Boston archdiocesan office of religious education presented an overview of the rapidly changing adult educationscene which has moved, shesaid, from a situation wherepeople said of programs, "Dowe have to come for six weeks;"

Catholic SchoolsThe bishops' statement on Ca

tholic schools, "Teach Them,"dealt specifically with educational ministry to children andyoung people as expressed inCatholic schools.

"We wish to declare our belief in the future of Catholicschools," wrote the bishops, "tooffer renewed encouragement toall our collaborators in theschool apostolate, to call attention to signs of progress andhope, to point to new areas forinvestigation and action, and todo all this in a spirit of realistichopefulness.

"In a significant way, continued the bishops, "Catholicschools bear witness to the importance of religion in our localcivic communities, and in oursociety as a whole. When asizeable segment of the American. people undertake to buildand operate a great system ofschools at considerable sacrificeserious citizens are thereby encouraged to reflect upon the importance of religion in humanlife. Without Catholic and otherchurch-related schools, spiritualvalues would find far less support in American society."

The statement outlined contributions of parents, teachers, administrators, pastors and theChristian community in generalto Catholic education and listedsuggestion for continued operation and. growth of Catholicschools to be considered by theCommittee on Education andthe Department of Education ofthe U.S. Catholic Conference.

nation by passing through theRed Sea and enduring trials inthe desert, Christ is consecrated·by passing through the Jordanand enduring temptations in thedesert. Israel failed her deserttrial. She preferred temporalsecurity to a reliance on God'sWord alone. Jesus did not succumb to that temptation butpivoted His whole existence onGod. He is the true worshipperof God alone."

Christ's transfiguration occursafter His first prediction of thepassion. Its purpose would seem

BY STEVE LANDREGANDuring Jesus' earthly life, the

Gospels record two occasionswhen His divinity was manifested, His Baptism (Matt. 3:1317, Mark 1:9-11, Luke 3:21-22,John 1:28-34), at the beginnig ofHis ministry, and the transfiguration (Matt 17:1-8, Mark 9:2-8,Luke 9:28-36), midway in Hisministry.

All of these passages areveiled in imagery that held greatmeaning for the early Christiancommunity but can easily escapeus because we are not attunedto Biblical thought patterns.

Matthew, Mark and Lukehave similar passages describing Jesus' Baptism in the Jordan by John the Baptist. John'spassage speaks of the eventssurounding the Baptism butnever describes the Baptism itself.

The first three Gospel versions have three points in common: (1) The heavens open; (2)The Holy Spirit descends uponJesus in the form of a dove; and(3) A voice from heaven acknowledges Jesus as the belovedSon, who is pleasing to God.

Both Isaiah (63:19f) and Ezekiel (1:1) refer to the opening ofthe heavens in connection withdivine manifestations. Third Isaiah in his prayer for the returnof God's favor cries out, "Ohthat you would rend the heavensand come down, with the mountains quaking before you." Ezekiel's great vision of the Chariotof God begins with the phrase"... the heavens opened, and Isaw divine visions.". There is a twofold symbolismto the descent of the Holy Spiritupon Jesus in the form of adove. The first reflects theprophecies that "the Spirit ofthe Lord shall rest upon Him"i~ Isaiah's passage on the ruleof Immanual (11:2), and SecondIsaiah's Servant of the Lord,"upon whom I have put mySpirit" (42:1). Peter later is torefer to God's anointing of Jesus"with the Holy Spirit and withpower" (Acts 10:38).

New IsraelBut there is another important

symbolism and that is the identification of Jesus as the NewIsrael, in whom the covenantlove (besed) will be perfectlylived out. Israel is frequentlyseen in the Old Testament asGod's dove (ps 68:14, 78:19).

The voice from heaven con·firms Jesus not only as belovedservant, but also as the belovedSon.

Father Roch Kereszty, O.Cist.,in unpublished notes, points outthat "His Baptism manifestsJesus as the New Israel. A striking parallelism exists betweenIsrael's passage through the RedSea and the desert and Jesus'trials in the desert. Matthewhas Jesus come from Egypt, passthrough the Jordan at the startof His public life and go to thedesert where he is consecrated. As Israel became a consecrated

IIen signs are seven Paschal candIes, a sevenfold illumination ofthe presence of the Christ ofEaster. They are as follows:

(1) TURN WATER INTOWINE 2: 1-13

Important as water is for refreshing the body, how muchgreater when it becomes wineto gladden the heart. This miracle of the wine looks forward tothe Eucharist where the RisenLord comes to us to create withus the absolute sense of acceptance and mellowness that characterizes a love that never betrays.

(2)) PURIFY THE TEMPLE2: 13-25

Jesus cleanses the Temple ofcommerce and all efforts at selfserving. Institutional religion ismeant to serve people, not itself. When the Temple is cleansed,God may be seen. When the institutional Church serves people, the Risen Lord is seen andknown.

(3) HEAL THE LAME 5: 1-15Jesus cures the lame man who

had tried for 38 years to seekfreedom for his limbs at the poolof Bethesda. Today Jesus livesto communicate a spiritual freedom as well for inner limbs thatare twisted with tension, despairand confusion. No matter thatyou have waited 38 years. Hewill come to bring you this innerfreedom.

Mass, but they normally arequite anxious that their offspringreceive both Baptism and FirstEucharist. Fathers and mothers, consequently, who do neglectthose two sacraments for theirchildren have plunged perilouslyclose to a level at which theirfaith has, practically speaking, been abandoned or lost. I stillfeel after two decades as a priestsad, helpless frustration uponencountering parents like this.

The children's and our appreciation ofand love for the Eucharist needto grow with the passing ofevery day.

The 41st International Eucharistic Congress which will convene in Philadelphia, August 1-8,has this kind of spiritual growthas a primary goal. A helpfulleaflet, "20 Questions and Answers," contains the followingpertinent explanation about thefunction of the forthcoming convocation.

In a time when meditation andprayer are taking new hold onmodern awareness, the Gospel ofJohn assumes new meaning. St.John turns our attention to theheights of spiritual reality. Hisvision is like the flight of aneagle moving toward the summits and peaks of religious possibility. The centerpiece of thisGospel is Jesus, risen from thedead.

St. John knew the historicalChrist with a love that won himthe courage to stand by him atthe humiliation of the cross andthe privilege to care for Christ'smother until the end of herearthly life. John's love did notabate after the resurrection, butsoared with years of meditativecommunion with his Easter Lord.

The celestial light of Easterpervades his whole Gospel. Hestill tells the earthly narrativesof the historical ministry ofJesus, but he puts a candle insideeach event so that the reader isprovoked to leap immediatelyfrom the terrestrial story to avision of the risen Lord presentnow and ready to relate withcaring concern to each personopening his heart to this presence.

This is why John keeps caIlingthe events of Christ's ministry"signs." In his first 12 chapters,John sings the "ExuItet" (theEaster Vigil song to the Paschalcandle) seven times. John's sev-

The last event has a joy all itsown for everyone involved: theradiant, excited child, the proudparents, the priests responsibleand those entrusted with thepreparation program.

To receive for the first timeour Risen Lord, the same Christwho was baptized in the Jordanand transfigured on a mountain, continues to be a major momentin the life of a young person.Seeing that it happens likewiseremains a responsibility clearlyunderstood as serious by evenmarginal Catholics whose linkwith the Church is at best extremely tenuous.

Such parents may grow careless themselves about Sunday

(7) RAISE LAZARUS FROMTHE DEAD 11, 1-44

This narrative has alwayscheered the mourners at Christian funerals. We shall not remain in the bondage of death. The Lord of Easter has promisedthat if we have lived and died inHim, we shall rise with Him,both to new life here and eternallife hereafter. Jesus weeps with.the mourners, groans at the burden of death and exults in aEucharistic thanksgiving as Hecalls Lazarus forth from thetomb.

These seven pillars of fire inSt. John shine brightly today inthe person of the Living Christ. They are striking points of meditation as well as guides to understanding our own eagle-likeflight toward our final destiny.

(5) WALK ON THE WATER6: 16-21

Water symbolizes many things. Here it speaks of the possibilityof being immersed in the caresand trials of life, of thinking thatall life is reduced to the flatnessof earthly perception. Jesuswalks on water to help us seethe need to transcend immediateperceptions, to look beyond theappearances of things to thedivine realities, to tum the wallsof facts into the windows revealing values, hopes and the luminous presence of the Lord.

(f?) CURE THE MAN BORNBLIND 9: 1-34

Early Christians loved to readthis healing at baptismal ceremonies. For them, Baptism wasan illumination, a removal ofblindness. In Baptism a paschalcandle is lit within the soul. Itssharp flame helps us to see with

.the keenness of a believer. Itsheds such new light upon lifethat we seem as though we haveovercome a blindness.

Centuries ago St. Augustinemade a now famous remark:"You have made us for yoursslf,o God, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you."

t have seen that hungry, restless spirit in boys and girls who"can't wait" until they are allowed to approach the altar andreceive Jesus' Body and Blood. We hope they will continue tosatisfy this hunger at the Lord'stable as the years go by. ThePhiladelphia Eucharistic Con·gress should encourage themand others to do so.

Perhaps the most practical aidis a tape cassette album bearingthe Congress' theme as its title.Relatively inexpensive i~29.95

MUlion Pilgrims

The week-long Congress is expected to attract a million pilgrims for the rich variety of activities scheduled. They includeMasses, lectures, concerts, workshops, exhibits, seminars andprayer services, concluding witha Eucharist expected to be celebrated by Pope Paul VI or apapal delegate before 250,000 atJFK Stadium.

Planners have set as its theme,"The Eucharist and the Hungersof the Human Family." Each daywill focus on a different "hunger" of humans: for God, bread, freedom and justice, the Spirit, truth, understanding, peace andfor Jesus, the Bread of Life. Thelast, "Jesus, the Bread of Life,"serves as the Congress' motto.

Those in charge stress thatwhile the August week is the focal point, they hope the Catholic world (and others, too, sinceit ,has an ecumenical dimension)will prepare for the Philadelphiaexperience by a six-month period of spiritual renewal con· I

ducted in every parish of theUnited States.

The committee has publisheda massive amount of materialto facilitate this preparationprocess. Through diocesan coordinators in each diocese communities can obtain films andslide-tape presentations as wellas printed suggestions forMasses, discussion groups para·liturgies, religious educationclasses and the like. Both thequantity and quality of theseitems are remarkably impressiveand the persons behind thoseproductions deserve our highestpraise.

care. I wish I didn't have relatives. They sure have messed upmy life. And mine are a pain inthe neck. They hate me. I don'tknow why. I never did anythingto them.

What is joy?I look at the word joy and I

see joyous, smiling faces and Ithink, "What is joy?" I don't feelit. All I hear in our house isname-calling, yelling, hitting andbanging. Both my parents drink, their friends drink, and then theywonder why I've got into troubleso much.

I try to find refuge in books, but when I read of other parentsand how nice they are and howclean they live, I get more depressed and wish I'd never beenborn. What makes parents thinkthey've given us a break by having us? I can't remember onehappy day in my life. I'm 17 andall I know is being unhappy andfull of pain inside.

Christ redeemed killersMy parents think I'm the

worst person on earth. They'vetold me so. When I watch TV(and I· do little of that becausethey're always yelling at me) Ibegin to cry. I can't help it. Allthe sadness seems to apply topeople like me. And when there'sgladness I cry, too, because I amnot sharing in it. It's awful whenyou're young and you don't havehappy memories to take intoyour adult years. I do everythingI'm supposed to do. I work parttime; I go to school. My gradesare good, but my parents arenever satisfied.

...yourfocus on youth

There are any number ofyoung people in our midst whoare so lonely and isolated fromtheir fellow man that only Godand a piece of paper know theirinternal anguish. These are themodern-day silent prophets. - Ithink of the words, "The Lordspoke and said, 'Go write it on atablet and inscribe it in a book, speak aloud the word of judgment that it may be a witnessforever.' "

And this they do, these lonely, neglected, criticized, forsaken

" young people. They write onscraps of paper. They write unsigned letters and friends forward them to this column.

The letters are full of anguish, tears, crying in the night. Whydoesn't someone hear? What isso important that it takes parents away from those who needthem right under their noses? What about all the other "toobusy" people? What is this otherthing they must do that is soimportant? More important thana human being on the edge ofthe precipice?

Cries of Exiles

I have been given permissionto excerpt from some of the letters. Following are some of thecries of those who live in exilein our midst:Dear Diary,

I've decided to start a diaryand hopefully it will be a betterfriend than any human beingwill ever be.

To be a faithful friend I musttell you a little about me (whichisn't too good). I smoke pot, Idrink, although I'm trying toquit smoking cigarettes, but likeeverything else in my life it's notworking too well!

I guess that's why my parentsdon't like me. It's awful wheneven your parents don't like you.I can't seem to do anything right.I even tried to run away lastnight, but that didn't even work!Well, thanks for listening to mystupid problems. See ya!

"Sometimes relatives are a painin the neck!

"My problem is our relatives. My parents think more of themthan they do of us kids. Myrelatives are like spies. They report everything I do to my parents and most of the time it'slies. I've felt like killing myselfor running away. I have no oneto talk to. They always blameme. They don't listen to how Ifeel or what I'm going through. They are all too dumb to understand. They are shallow and onlytalk about everyday things.

They don't seem to care aboutwhat goes on inside of a personand why they act the way theydo. Even when I'm with some ofthe kids I'm not really happy. Ialways have this awful feelingwith me that I don't have anybody who cares now or ever will
