Global equity markets ended in green for
September with advanced economies gaining
the most followed by the emerging market
(EMs) indices. Select Asian markets ended the
month lower. The US economy expanded 3.0%
in Q2 compared to esmated 2.6% growth.
Posive economic growth data (jobs data, rise in
personal income, spending and improving
consumer senments) buoyed the US equies.
But gains were capped due to escalang
geopolical tension between the US and North Korea and polical turmoil within
the US administraon. Germany's DAX (6.4%) rose on upbeat economic data,
parcularly as the country's manufacturing sector remains in robust health relave
to other Eurozone naons. Brazil (4.2%) was the top gainer amongst EMs due to
rally in global commodies, followed by Japan (3.6%) helped by a manufacturing
survey showing the business confidence was the highest in 10 years.
Brent crude futures prices rose (9.8%) to hit a 26-month high, just shy of USD 60 a
barrel, aer investors were encouraged by signs that a global overhang was
clearing and aer Turkey threatened to cut off flows of oil from the Kurdistan
region in northern Iraq following an independence referendum. Prices of industrial
metals such as Zinc and Aluminium rose in September in ancipaon of increased
Chinese demand for metals on improving Chinese trade data and amid
expectaon of fall in inventories. Aluminium rose to a 6 year high on talks of
capacity cuts by China, world's largest aluminium producer, due to environmental
concerns. Gold recorded its biggest monthly decline (3%) as the US Dollar rose and
the equies gained, while growing expectaons for a Federal Reserve interest rate
hike in December also added to the pressure.
Despite global emerging markets performing well, Indian equity markets mostly
finished lower during the month. Global geopolical issues triggered by ballisc
missile tesng by North Korea dented global risk senments and led to capital
oulows from the Indian market. On the domesc front, SEBI's direcve to stock
exchanges to iniate acon against suspected shell companies, GST-led disrupon
in the economy indicated by a lackluster economic data and a rise in inflaon
weighed on market senments. Frontline indices (S&P BSE Sensex and Niy 50) (-
1.3%) underperformed broader indices (-1.1%) as well as the mid cap (1%) and
small cap (0.8%) indices. Among the sectoral indices, Healthcare sector was the
biggest gainer (3.5%), however it's complex but rewarding. Metal firms jumped
aer steel and iron ore prices in China surged following posive Chinese economic
data. Most auto companies reported very good monthly sales growth. Considering
fesve seasons is earlier this me on a YoY basis Sep was expected to be good
despite auto sector facing setback from increased cess on large cars and SUVs.
FMCG Index (-5.2%) was the biggest looser as the expected recovery sll not
robust specifically in the rural areas. Encouragingly all these companies are not
slowing down on new launches and have indicated that ad-spend will be elevated
compared to FY17 levels.
FPI flows turned negave in equity (USD -1.8 bn) but domesc instuonal
investors bought USD 3.2 bn.
Macroeconomic indicators remained mixed during the month with moderate pick
up in manufacturing PMI and exports growth on the one hand, and firming
inflaon and soer GDP growth numbers, widening trade deficit on the other.
GDP growth for Q1FY18 came in at a 3-year low of 5.7%, below consensus
expectaon (6.5%) led by connued impact of demonezaon, uncertainty ahead
of GST roll-out, lacklustre growth in manufacturing and lower private sector
consumpon. Government spending rose which supported growth. The inial
kneejerk reacon to GST roll-out on the manufacturing sector PMI in July (47.9)
was reversed in August (51.2) as order book volumes and output prices across
India rose. The services PMI contracted for a second month in a row in August
(47.5) even as the extent of contracon lowered from July (45.9). Composite PMI
displayed a weaker level of contracon to end at 49.0 (46 in July). Index for
industrial producon (IIP) for July expanded by 1.2%. Trade deficit (merchandise)
Harshad PatwardhanCIO-Equies
further lowered to USD 11.6 bn in August as exports growth remained posive,
but slower at 10.3% (YoY). Growth in imports accelerated further (21%) compared
to previous month (15.4%).
The slowdown witnessed in Q1FY18 GDP growth may be considered as a
temporary dri as the economy adjusts to the new GST regime. Inventory
normalizaon post GST implementaon has been evident in Auto and
pharmaceucals sectors. Railway freight traffic, power generaon, domesc air
traffic, steel consumpon have remained posive. Consumer spending trend in the
upcoming fesve season will be a key factor to watch to gauge the impact of
exisng consumpon senments. Other domesc factors to look out for include
pace of non-performing loans (NPL) resoluon so as to revive credit growth, pace
of reforms post cabinet shuffle and trend in inflaon.
Among the global risks the monetary policy in the advanced economies turning
hawkish poses headwinds for capital flows to emerging markets including India.
Repercussions of North Korean missile tesng is expected to weigh on market risk
senments. Rupee's appreciaon could lose momentum.

What we said earlier:
• The recent decline in GDP growth for
Q1FY18 had raised clamor for lower interest
rates in order to support economic growth
• Based on the evolving macro-economic
landscape, we remained construcve on
government bonds
• We expected government bonds to
connue to perform well in September as
well
What happened?
September turned out to be another tough month for bond market parcipants.
The month began on an upbeat note with the benchmark 10Y government bond
yield dipping below 6.47% in the early days amid fresh bidding interest from
market parcipants. Soon, bond market parcipants' focus soon shied to the
upcoming inflaon data for August and its likely implicaon on the upcoming
Monetary Policy Meeng in early October 2017.
Headline CPI for August was released on September 12 was higher-than-expected
level at 3.36% against survey expectaon of 3.24%. Granular informaon of the
CPI suggested that a bulk of increase was on account of seasonal increase in
vegetable prices (mostly tomatoes). Consumer prices rose 0.7% m-o-m on
seasonally adjusted basis in August aer rising 0.8% in July. Core-core prices
(inflaon adjusted for petrol and diesel prices) also increased 0.6% in August aer
a similar hike in July 2017. Analysts aribute this increase in core-core prices to
GST related price adjustments percolang to August as well.
The narrave in the bond market began to change in the second-half of the month
when the FOMC reiterated its commitment to four rate hikes by December 2018
against market parcipants' expectaons of two hikes in the same period. As a
result, yields of US Treasuries and developed countries jumped from their lows as
market parcipants began to adjust their posions in response to the new
informaon. The Federal Reserve also exhibited confidence of inflaon gradually
reaching their 2% target in the medium-term. In the euro-zone, improving macro-
economic landscape and strengthening Purchasing Managers' Index caused
market parcipants to speculate when the ECB will turn to normalize interest rates
in the euro-zone.
As a result, the benchmark 10Y UST yield hardened by around 22 basis points in
September to around 2.33% aer touching a low of 2.05% in the first week of
September 2017. Similarly, yields of 10Y gilt in the UK hardened by around 33
basis points in September while the German 10Y government bond yield hardened
by around 10 basis points in September.
Back home, bond market parcipants reacted negavely to media reports
suggesng slower-than-expected trend in the government's revenue collecon
and prospects of addional government borrowing in FY18. Bond yields hardened
by around 10 basis points in a knee-jerk reacon before the government
clarificaon soothed frayed nerves. The Finance Minister's clarificaon at a later
stage that nothing was decided and the government would take the call only in the
last quarter of the financial year aer observing revenue trend allayed fears.
However, the damage was done as market parcipants began to factor in
possibility of addional borrowing of around Rs 50,000 crore on account of decline
in the RBI's dividend income to the government, drop in PSU dividend income,
sharp fall in income from telecom sector as well as prospecve shorall in
disinvestment income in FY18.
The RBI-led MPC expected decided to hold rates in the recently concluded
meeng on October 3-4. However, keeping in mind the recent trend in inflaon,
they raised their projected inflaon band to 4.2-4.6% for March 2018 from 3.5-
4.5% in August policy meeng. The RBI also raised their concerns on potenal
fiscal slippage as well as ongoing farm loan waiver program & its negave impact
on inflaon. A secon of market parcipants felt that the RBI had closed the door
on a possible rate cut in the near-term. As a result, the benchmark 10Y
government bond yield hardened by around 8 basis points to around 6.75% on
October 6, 2017.

The following table also highlights the trading acvies of key market parcipants in the secondary market for government bonds, SDL and Treasury Bills in month of September 2017:
Source: Edelweiss Securies Ltd. Negave numbers denote net selling. Amount in Rs. Crore.
Outlook for October:
Recent price acon in the bond market aer the MPC meeng suggests unwinding of the posions built up in ancipaon of a posive outcome in the MPC despite a near unanimity for a status quo. A secon of market parcipants also believe that bond prices are likely to dri lower in the absence of any posive trigger in the near-term and commencement of the primary supply of government bonds and SDL amid declining surplus liquidity. On the global front, further improvements on the economic front and employment front are raising clamor for removal of monetary accommodaon and normalizaon of the policy rates in the medium-term. As a result, we expect the dollar to maintain a strengthening bias against the euro as well as some EM currencies. Market parcipants are also keenly following developments on geo-polical fronts & new alliances and their impact on crude oil prices. In this scenario, it is prudent to be cauous in our opinion. That said, we believe that value should emerge in government bonds at around 6.85-90% level for the benchmark 10Y government bonds. We connue to prefer high quality bonds for their relave safety and liquidity despite their recent under-performance.

INVESTMENT OBJECTIVE
Prudent Advantage Fund
The objective of the Scheme is to generate returns through a combination of dividend income and capital appreciation by investing primarily in a well-diversified portfolio of Value Stocks. Value Stocks are those stocks, which tend to trade at a lower price relative to their fundamentals (i.e. dividends, earnings, sales, etc.) and thus considered undervalued by investors. They have attractive valuations in relation to earnings or book value or current and/or future dividends. However, there is no assurance that the investment objective of the Scheme will be realized and the Scheme does not assure or guarantee any returns.

HOW TO READ A FACTSHEET
Fund Manager : An employee of the asset management company such as a mutual fund or life insurer, who manages investments of the
scheme. He is usually part of a larger team of fund managers and research analysts.
Applicaon Amount for Fresh Subscripon : This is the minimum investment amount for a new investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Minimum Addional Amount : This is the minimum investment amount for an exisng investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Yield to Maturity : The Yield to Maturity or the YTM is the rate of return ancipated on a bond if held unl maturity. YTM is expressed as an
annual rate. The YTM factors in the bond's current market price, par value, coupon interest rate and me to maturity.
SIP : SIP or systemac investment plan works on the principle of making periodic investments of a fixed sum. It works similar to a recurring
bank deposit. For instance, an investor may opt for an SIP that invests Rs 500 every 15th of the month in an equity fund for a period of three
years.
NAV : The NAV or the net asset value is the total asset value per unit of the mutual fund aer deducng all related and permissible expenses.
The NAV is calculated at the end of every business day. It is the value at which the investor enters or exits the mutual fund.
Benchmark : A group of securies, usually a market index, whose performance is used as a standard or benchmark to measure investment
performance of mutual funds, among other investments. Some typical benchmarks include the Niy, Sensex, BSE200, BSE500, 10-Year Gsec.
Entry Load : A mutual fund may have a sales charge or load at the me of entry and/or exit to compensate the distributor/agent. Entry load is
charged at the me an investor purchases the units of a mutual fund. The entry load is added to the prevailing NAV at the me of investment.
For instance, if the NAV is Rs. 100 and the entry load is 1%, the investor will enter the fund at Rs 101.
Note: SEBI, vide circular dated June 30, 2009 has abolished entry load and mandated that the upfront commission to distributors will be paid
by the investor directly to the distributor, based on his assessment of various factors including the service rendered by the distributor
Exit Load : Exit load is charged at the me an investor redeems the units of a mutual fund. The exit load is deducted from the prevailing NAV
at the me of redempon. For instance, if the NAV is Rs 100 and the exit load is 1%, the redempon price would be Rs 99 Per Unit.
Modified Duraon : Modified duraon is the price sensivity and the percentage change in price for a unit change in yield
Standard Deviaon : Standard deviaon is a stascal measure of the range of an investment's performance. When a mutual fund has a high
standard deviaon, its means its range of performance is wide, implying greater volality.
Sharpe Rao : The Sharpe Rao, named aer its founder, the Nobel Laureate William Sharpe, is a measure of risk-adjusted returns. It is
calculated using standard deviaon and excess return to determine reward per unit of risk.
Beta : Beta is a measure of an investment's volality vis-à-vis the market. Beta of less than 1 means that the security will be less volale than
the market. A beta of greater than 1 implies that the security's price will be more volale than the market.
AUM : AUM or assets under management refers to the recent / updated cumulave market value of investments managed by a mutual fund
or any investment firm.
Holdings : The holdings or the porolio is a mutual fund's latest or updated reported statement of investments/securies. These are usually
displayed in terms of percentage to net assets or the rupee value or both. The objecve is to give investors an idea of where their money is
being invested by the fund manager.
Nature of Scheme : The investment objecve and underlying investments determine the nature of the mutual fund scheme. For instance, a
mutual fund that aims at generang capital appreciaon by invesng in stock markets is an equity fund or growth fund.Likewise, a mutual
fund that aims at capital preservaon by invesng in debt markets is a debt fund or income fund. Each of these categories may have subcategories.
Rang Profile : Mutual funds invest in securies aer evaluang their creditworthiness as disclosed by the rangs. A depicon of the mutual
fund in various investments based on their rangs becomes the rang profile of the fund. Typically, this is a feature of debt funds.
