T ime flies and before you know it, it has been more than 100
days that our new General Manager, Mr Ernest Ng had
taken over the management of the Club. So glad to have you on
board, Ernest, and looking forward to your leading a wonderful
SCC team. All eyes are on the SCC Open on 19 and 20 July 2019. A
Mercedes E Class or $10K cash awaits the Hole-in-One prize
winner. May the best golfers rule! Congratulations are in order for all those newly promoted. May
you enjoy your promotion and remember to celebrate with us at
SCC. Cheers!

IN & AROUND BY GM MR ERNEST NG

Dear Members. Hello and good day to all.
I have just past my first 100 days at SCC.
Hurray, I survived!
Three Months Gone by: April – June 2019
There were several major milestones for the last
3 months in SCC. Firstly, to my management
team it’s about changing mind-sets: Building One
Team. This was almost like a “protracted war”
involving significant “conflicts” about 2 cannots;
this cannot and that cannot. We also had to
battle the cynicism of what is One Team. On top
of that, we had to champion the many
engagements, feedbacks and the operations of
the club aimed at providing the best to our
members. Overall, I think we emerged largely
unscathed and with some successes. I would like
to extend a big thank you to my team for staying
true to the course and cause, and for supporting
and ensuring that we steer this ship in the right
direction. Secondly, Strategy. We went through
some very difficult and detailed discussions
about how to steer this ship to address current
realities and our desired outcome, sometimes
even engaging in heated “debates”. We have
also discussed the Vision, Mission and Values of
the club in great details, all ready for unveiling in
months to come. Overall, it was a fruitful quarter.
What took place in the last 3 months?
For the last 3 months, the Club continues to grow
from strength to strength both on and off the golf
course. A big THANK YOU to all who supported
our initiatives such as our festive events, monthly
medals, our F&B Promotions (our Satay Combo
Promotion) and even our first step towards our
Go Green efforts. I am happy to announce they
were all very well-received by members and
guests. Kudos to all and the team who made it
happened. I am sure we are all looking forward to
more festivities and fun in the upcoming
Members Night, Family Carnival, Deepavali and
Christmas golf events, not to mention our new
cozy café at the driving range.
Some of the key highlights of the last quarter are
as follows. The Club played host to the SCC &
KRTU friendly game (27 Apr 2019) and
organised one of our major festive golfing events,
Hari Raya Golf (15 June 2019). Both events
were celebrated with dinners that were absolutely
delicious. More importantly, there were lots of fun
and bonding. We were pleasantly heartened by
your participation and would continue to create
more memorable times with you and your family.

IN & AROUND BY GM MR ERNEST NG

Do continue to support our events and initiatives.
The months ahead: July- Dec 2019
SCC Open (19 & 20 July 2019)
July is the month for our highly anticipated SCC
Open. We expect a turn out in excess of 500
players and sponsors for our 2-day events. This
round, aside from the absolutely value-for money
goodie bags for both ladies and men, expect a
mouth-watering dinner and musical performances
for each day. Not to mention our super attractive
hole-in-one prizes (WOW! An E-Class Mercedes
and $10,000 cash on selected holes) for the lucky
ones! Don’t miss out!
Let’s “Go Green” Campaign
This time, it’s not about our Greens. Our greens
are growing well. The “Let’s Go Green Together”
Campaign was SCC’s initiative to improve the
environment in our own small way. By
encouraging the use of environmentally
sustainable practices in our premises such as
progressively doing away with the provision of
plastic bags in our changing rooms and drinking
straws in our restaurant, we hope to cultivate an
eco-conscious culture where everyone joins in to
make the Club environmentally friendly. We will
certainly do more in time to come and we eagerly
look forward to all your participations as the
campaign took flight 1 July 2019. Let’s “GO
GREEN” together!
Refurbishing the Changing Rooms
Another exciting effort in the coming months
would be our efforts to improve the Club
premises. We will be refreshing our golf changing
rooms at the end of this year. Members can
expect sleek interiors, enhanced lighting and
improved fixtures upon stepping into the
refreshed changing rooms. We will be showing
exhibits of the refurbishment works sometime in
Oct 2019 for members awareness. As the
refurbishment works will take place over a few
months and involve some re-allocation of
changing room for use, we seek your
understanding for any inconveniences caused
during this time. We will do our best to smoothen
the transition and ensure a pleasant experience
for you and your guests. Do stay tuned for more
updates via our various communication channels.
Staff Excellence Award (April to June 2019)
People are the cornerstone of all things
successful (especially in our industry). SCC will
always remember to have our peoples’ interest at
the centre of our considerations and at HEART
(以人為本). We are pleased to announce the
winners for the quarter of April to June 2019:
John (Facilities Supervisor) and Driving Range
Staff (Group Award) from Operations Department,
Afiqah (Events & Marketing Officer) and Rez
(Golfing Assistant) from Golfing Department.
Congratulations to all of them, and well done!
Thank you for your nominations, compliments and
feedback. Your positive feedback would certainly
motivate our staff to do their best and take pride in
their work. Do keep your feedback and
compliments coming! We will be glad to know how
we can serve you better.
Conclusion
It has been an eventful 3 months both for SCC
and me. We certainly hope that you are enjoying
the year thus far as much as we do! We are
nowhere perfect or getting there and many times
we also catch ourselves lacking in some areas.
Do continue to provide constructive feedbacks on
how we can do better. We are always open to
hear from you. Why? Because this is OUR CLUB,
and we are in this TOGETHER.
On a personal note, I am thoroughly pleased, and
feels wonderful, getting to know many of you and
your family over the course of my 100 days.
Again, these are probably my greatest joy and
gains this quarter.
As we stepped into August 2019. Our nation turns
54. Look out as SCC presents to all of you more
festive fun, including F&B promotions at the Club.
Here’s wishing you a Happy National Day and see
you at the Club!
YAY! I am 100 days old in this club :)

CAPTAIN’S COLUMN BY ME7 TEH CHONG ANN

Hi Sembawang golfers and friends,
First of all, let me thank all those who have
signed up to support our biennial SCC Open that
is coming up soon this month – it will be held on
Friday, 19th Jul for the Ladies, and Saturday, 20
th
Jul for the Men. And the TOP SECRET is out
now, all those participating in the event can have
a chance of either winning a Mercedes E-Class
or $10K (cold hard cash) on the 4 Par 3s when
your dream Hole-in-One happens! A gentle
(important) reminder for all golfers that due to
overwhelming participation, our existing parking
lots will not be able to accommodate all the cars
if most of us drive to the club, so parking shall be
on a first-come-first-served basis. Therefore, we
strongly encourage everyone to either Grab or
carpool as much as possible, and also to arrive
well ahead of your tee time (those arriving early
to prepare their mental state also seems to have
a higher chance of getting their Hole-in-One).
The organising committee is also working hard to
up the experiential factor on and off the Green,
so let us have your feedback after the event. :)
On safety and golf etiquette, these really go hand
-in-hand. If you recall, when Retro and I first took
over, we said that one of our key focus areas
was on the reduction of incidents of hazardous
play. We have since taken several measures
such as putting warning signage (or rather
reminders) at Hole #9 and Hole #13 on possible
dangerous play situations, and shifting the Hole
#13 tee-box back. However, these measures can
only reduce and not eliminate the risks of
dangerous play. The onus is on each and every
one of us to abide by the rules and respect the
other members of our SCC family as well as
others who play on our wonderful course.
Recently, we have seen an uptick in the number
of disciplinary reports, which had caused some
unpleasantness amongst our members. These
cases include driving the buggies into restricted
areas, not shouting ‘fore’ when the ball goes
astray, and not waiting for other golfers to clear
the green. We understand that sometimes we
might get impatient when the flight in front is
proceeding at a slower-than-expected pace. But
this should not be a justification to engage in
dangerous play, which not only threatens the
safety of others and yourselves, but also affects
the relationships between members of our SCC
family. I would encourage all to arrive early at
your tee-off to recognise the players in front of
you so that you can identify them ahead
throughout the game (good to say Hi also leh).
And in assessing whether the players in front of
you are out of range, do imagine that you will hit
the best shot that you ever had (minus those
times when your ball took the ‘MRT track’ to gain
obscene distances).
We will need all our golfers to make sure that we
are not causing slow play, since slow play
seems to breed dangerous play (it’s a tongue
twister). For those amongst us who take a
longer time to aim on the putting greens, we’d
say go for it, but be reasonable. Most of the
time, the devil is not in the aim, but the
execution. However, we also believe that slow
play is caused by unfamiliarity with the rules,
hence do acquaint yourself with the recent rules
changes. Let us all can look forward to a more
enjoyable and safe game on our course.
We come together because of our love for golf
and that includes fellow golfers as well. So be
nice, stay safe, and most importantly, let’s all
have fun out there together. See you at the SCC
Open 2019!
Chong Ann and Retro

LADIES’ CORNER BY LADY CAPTAIN ME5 EMILY LEE

T he Quarterly Ladies Cohesion was held on 18 May 2019 and a total of 20 ladies took time to join us for a round of social golf and get to know more lady golfers for future networking. The ladies were dressed to the Flora theme and to our surprise, both Linda Kang and
Sakura Tan were dressed in similar purple top and floral bottom that they looked like “sisters”. Group photos were taken near at the pool side for a twist to break the ice…followed by a game of 18 holes. The weather held up well and some ladies enjoyed more of “we-fie’, yoga and “jumping” in the golf course than the golf game itself…..nevertheless, it was still a great platform for them to enjoy and get to know each other more. This time, we had 5 “newbies” joining us, the largest number of newbies compared to the past cohesion gathering …and they were Serene Mui Gek Goerojo, Tan Lay Har, Joyce Heng, Lynn Ng and Casilda Tan Chay Hiang and they were given some airtime to self-introduce themselves.

Thereafter the ladies were treated with light dinner that tasted so good especially when you are hungry. n between, they took the opportunity to interact with one another, exchanging mobile phone numbers so they can “jio” each other for golf games. The evening ended on a sumptuous note when all went home with great smiles and carrying with them at least a prize
for their great teamwork on the golf course, in addition to the “goodie bag” given which was a Heineken Golf umbrella to provide them a shady place in the sun when they next golf. All looking forward to the next gathering…. Our heartiest thanks to all the ladies who had participated in this ladies get-together and the ladies sub-committee together with the golfing staff who had helped to put everything together. This event was held for the ladies’ golfer, new and experienced, to meet and expand their circle of golfing kakis within Sembawang. Golf is a sport, and sports are meant to connect people. Hope all will look forward to meet each other in the club and not just to say a “Hi’’ and “Bye”, BUT to “jio” each other for a fun golf game . Till we meet again!
Ladies having so much fun that everyone look forward to the next gathering !

Hitting Great Shots Is More than Just Clubhead Speed
By Thomas Pieters | Golf Digest
Photos by Thierry DesFontaines
work's been done. Now it's about getting in
contention and coming through in the clutch,
and I've been able to do that a few times.
This idea of pressure is why people love
watching Henrik Stenson hit iron shots so
much. Henrik learned it from Pete as well,
and he compresses the ball better than
anybody.
When you do it correctly, you'll transfer more
of the energy you generate with your swing
into distance - and accuracy. You're hitting
the ball flush, instead of with a glancing blow.
I'm 6-foot-5 with long arms, and I train to be
flexible and strong. My clubhead speed with
the driver, about 120 miles per hour, reflects
that. But no matter how fast you swing, you
can get better results by focusing more on
pressure than speed. I'll show you a couple
of ways to do that. - With Matthew Rudy
E veryone wants to hit the the ball farther.
That's easy to understand. Length
makes it easier to score. But if you're looking
at pure clubhead speed as your indicator for
how far - and how well - you're hitting shots,
you're missing an important part of the story.
I've been lucky enough to have the same
great coach since I was 13. That's when Pete
Cowen came to Belgium to run a program for
up-and-coming junior players. Pete told me
from the beginning the goal was to have a
swing that would hold up under the most
stressful situations; one that consistently put
pressure on the ball and didn't require lots of
manipulation with the hands. So that's what
we practiced.
I spent years learning how to create pressure
with my shoulders, and then transmit it
through my arms into the club and ball. The
11
GOLF TIPS
12
GET IN SEQUENCE: AXE DRILL
If you go on YouTube and type in "Pete
Cowen drill," you'll find a bunch of videos
where he's demonstrating some version of
the axe drill - which is one of my favorites. I
do it almost every week on the range before
an event, because it produces such a great
feeling of unwinding in the right sequence
and direction - key to putting pressure on the
ball. To do it, flip the club around in your
hands so the toe is pointing at the ground
(below) and make some swings without a
ball. If you were going to chop straight down
on a log with an axe where the ball would be, you'd use your shoulders, arms and wrists in a
specific, efficient way. Your swing should have the same motion, just turned to the side. With the
club flipped, the change in location of weight will get you to feel it moving on the correct path
down. In this drill, you want to get back to impact the way you started, with the toe down.
Shape shots with subtle body moves instead of steering it
with your hands.
RELEASE CHECK: BALL-TOSS DRILL
If you want to have a long conversation
about golf instruction, say the word
"release" to a teacher or tour pro and get
out of the way. How the club should
unhinge in the downswing gets taught a
lot of different ways, but it's more
important to feel a good release than
define it. I use a drill that gives me an
immediate sense if I'm doing it right. I
stand about 15 feet from a wall holding a
tennis ball I bring to every event, but I'm using a foam golf ball here. While in golf posture, I
hold the ball in my right hand and place my left arm across my chest. Then I make a golf-swing
motion over and over, throwing the ball down hard onto the same spot where my golf ball
would be on the ground at address (below). When it's thrown right, the foam ball hits that spot,
bounces off the wall and comes back to me. If it's released too early or too late, the ball just
goes sideways, and I have to chase it down. Try this drill. If you can consistently hit the spot
when you throw a ball, you now have the feel for when to release the club in the downswing.
That's how you put pressure on the ball. And the more you do that, the more you can make it
do what you want.

THE NEXT GENERATION
Not many American golf fans knew who Thomas Pieters was going into the 2016 Ryder
Cup. That changed after the Belgian, who was partnered with Rory McIlroy, went 4-1,
scoring the most points as a European rookie in history. "He gets on the biggest stage, and
he's not frightened at all," says coach Pete Cowen, who has worked with many top
European pros including Henrik Stenson and Lee Westwood. "You can't say that about
many players." Pieters, 25, is comfortable in America, having played three years at Illinois
where he won the 2012 individual NCAA title. But he has no plans to leave the European
Tour, where he has won three times in his first three seasons. He'll play a "global
schedule," Pieters says, and try to close on his first major win. "He'll go as far as he wants
to go," Cowen adds. "He's the complete package."

Bouquets I want to pay a compliment to Mr Vijay from the locker room. I left my wallet unattended on the bench and he helped me to keep it safe and returned to me when I came out of the shower. Guest, 1 April 2019 I had played many times in SCC. I really find Mary very intelligent and capable. She is also eloquent and speaks fluently with good substance. She is diligent, upright in character and very efficient in her work. I hope she could be promoted in due course. Guest, 1 April 2019
Mr John from Swimming Pool provides good service to members. Well done John! Khoo Thiam Huat, 8 April 2019
Afiqah, I would like to thank you for the great support with our event on 11 May 2019 at SCC. All our guests did enjoy themselves with the venue and excellent support from your staff who made this a success. Thank you for your excellent coordination. Guest, 21 May 2019
Well organised and very helpful from the Club Management as they help us during the event especially Rani and Mei Lian. Koh Jing Ren, 23 May 2019
Anthony (F&B supervisor) & team were very helpful throughout our event. They were able to accede to our request to set up at 6pm. Chun Fuk was also helpful with setting up. Most of all, Afiqah had been helpful with our arrangement from the start. Food was good and everyone was happy. Thank you. Guest, 24 June 2019
