DR. SIDNEY A. RIBEAU, UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

student and community groups who come together to achieve acommon educational goal or provide a special service to those inneed.

In 2003, Dr. Ribeau was recognized by the National Association ofStudent Personnel Administrators, which presented him with itsPresident’s Award for his “courage and leadership in guiding theBowling Green State University campus community to develop acommunity focused on student learning and designed to educate thewhole student by taking students’ personal and intellectual growthinto consideration.”

Alumni and friends of the University also are supportive of Dr.Ribeau’s vision for BGSU. Contributions to the University havegrown steadily during his presidency. Over $74 million already hadbeen donated to Building Dreams: The Centennial Campaign forBowling Green State University when the fund-raising drive waspublicly launched in April, 2005. The national campaign’s goal is toraise $120 million in private support for scholarships, endowedchairs, capital improvements and academic program enhancements.

Dr. Ribeau serves on Ohio’s Higher Education Funding Commis-sion, is a member of the Board of Directors for the NationalCollegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and chair of the Inter-University Council of Presidents for 2005-06. A member of both theBowling Green and Toledo Chambers of Commerce, he also serveson the boards of United Way, the Greater Toledo Urban League, theToledo Symphony Orchestra, the Teachers Insurance and AnnuityAssociaton-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF), theRegional Growth Partnership, the Andersons Inc. in Maumee,Convergys Corp., and Worthington Industries.

Raised in Detroit, President Ribeau received his bachelor’s degreefrom Wayne State University in 1971. In 1996 WSU honored himwith a Distinguished Alumnus Award. He earned master’s anddoctoral degrees in interpersonal communication from the Univer-sity of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1973 and 1979, respectively.

He began his teaching career in 1976 as a professor of communica-tion studies at California State University, Los Angeles. Eight yearslater, after being honored as an outstanding teacher and studentadviser, he was named chair of the university’s Pan African StudiesDepartment. He held that position until 1987, when he was nameddean of undergraduate studies at California State University, SanBernardino. Three years later, he became dean of the College ofLiberal Arts at Cal Poly’s San Luis Obispo campus. In 1992 he wasnamed vice president for academic affairs at Cal Poly Pomona, aposition he held until coming to Bowling Green.

When Dr. Sidney A. Ribeau accepted thepresidency of Bowling Green StateUniversity in 1995, he envisioned creatinga premier learning community whosegraduates are uniquely equipped to meetthe world’s challenges. In the decade since,Bowling Green’s ninth president has led theUniversity to adopt a values-centeredmission – something rare at a publicuniversity – and provide an academicenvironment that develops culturallyliterate, technologically sophisticated, productive citizens prepared to lead and to inspire. During hispresidency a number of innovative, signature programs have beencreated, such as the newly-implemented Scholarship of EngagementInitiative that encourages collaborative faculty involvement withprivate and public groups to identify and resolve relevant issuesthrough scholarship. The President’s Leadership Academy, begun in1997, and BGeXperience: Vision and Values, started in 2003, aretwo others. The President’s Leadership Academy enables selectstudents from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds to enhancetheir leadership skills through mentoring and co-curricular programsduring their academic careers. BGeXperience integrates valueseducation, critical thinking, character development and civicinvolvement while helping students make the transition from highschool to a university campus. Beginning this fall (2005), everyincoming first-year freshman will take part in BGeXperience.

Dr. Ribeau has upgraded the University’s communications andcomputing technology and encouraged collaboration with otherinstitutions to increase operational and cost efficiencies. He haschampioned collaborative research and instructional programs aswell. One example is the nationally recognized Center for Photo-chemical Sciences, which received a $2 million Wright CapitalProject grant from the state in 2003, to create a laboratory that willwork collaboratively with business, industry and nonprofit organiza-tions to bring innovations in the photochemical sciences to themarketplace. Another is Partnerships for Community Action, asmall grant program that underwrites programs initiated by faculty,

In partnership with Clear Channel Lima, the Falcons have created a10-station radio network. The radio broadcasts for men’s basketball, football and the coaches’ shows have grown from a single station toone of the largest radio networks in the MAC. This networkprovides coverage of Falcon Sports within a two-hour radius ofBowling Green. Along with the increased strength-of-signal anddistribution, this new network includes state-of-the-art technologyand satellite distribution of the signal.

Krebs fostered a relationship with ESPN Regional Television, whichhas seen BGSU make 23 appearances in football and men’sbasketball since 2000. In addition, BGSU was the site of the first-ever visit to a MAC school by ESPN’s College GameDay program.Under Krebs’ direction, BGSU Athletics now manages all of itsradio and television sponsorship in-house and manages its ownwebsite – bgsufalcons.com – with collegesports.com. It is the mostheavily trafficked MAC website in the CSTV Network. Also underKreb’s guidance, licensing is now overseen by the Athletic Depart-ment. Since taking over licensing, traditional athletic marks havebeen refreshed and new designs have been introduced, which hasaccounded for a significant increase of Falcon merchandise in retailas royalty revenues have increased over 200%.

Krebs has helped lead the charge to improve facilities, including theinstallation of permanent lighting at Doyt Perry Stadium in August,2001; the replacement of all bench seating in Perry Stadium; therenovation of the lockerrooms and new coaches’ offices at theBGSU Ice Arena; new bleachers and a press box at baseball’sWarren Steller Field; and a new infield, irrigation and warning trackat the BGSU Softball Field. At “The Doyt,” a state-of-the-art video

scoreboard, a new sound system, and air conditioning in the eastside stadium suites were added in 2004. Currently, fundraising isunderway and construction is planned to start this Fall for the SeboAthletic Center. A study is currently underway to determine thefeasibility of renovating Anderson Arena or building a new convoca-tion center.
