10 things

There are about 42,000 polling stations across the UK.

Sunderland South, the constituency which prided itself on being first to declare a result, is no more, following boundary changes.

This is the first time a general election and elections for the London boroughs have been held on the same day.

It is also the first time, since 1979, that none of the three main party leaders has headed a previous general election campaign

In the past three general elections, more seats declared between 2am and 3am than any other hour of the night.

The constituency of Thirsk and Malton will not be contested until 27 May, due to the death of the Ukip candidate John Boakes, a fortnight ago.

There will be a lot of new faces in the new Parliament - 149 MPs decided to retire at this election , more than at any election since 1945.

The convention that the seat belonging to the Speaker of the House is uncontested has been broken by Ukip’s Nigel Farage who is standing against Speaker John Bercow. The Tories need a swing of 6.9% from Labour to win an overall majority - greater than that in any election since 1950, except Tony Blair's 1997 victory.

In the unlikely event of a tie in any seat, the

winner will be decided by drawing lots.
