Dear Friends:

With every concert, the musicians of your Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra demonstrate their commitment to artistic excellence. It is indeed a pleasure to work with such talented artists who put their hearts and souls into each performance. From concerts on the Eastman Theatre stage to educational presentations for young children to community concerts in locations throughout the Rochester area, the Orchestra creates music that lifts the spirit and soothes the soul. For a city this size, your RPO is undoubtedly the finest orchestra in America.

In 2003-2004, we offered 14 pairs of incredible classical concerts in the Philharmonics Series with music from the classical era to the present day. We welcomed back pianist Jon Nakamatsu for his first Philharmonics Series concerts performed on the piano dedicated in his honor, as well as guest artists and conductors including Louis Lortie, Ilya Kaler, PhilippeEntremont, Orli Shaham and Hélène Grimaud. We also added the PAETEC Philharmonic Partners Program offering discounted tickets to Philharmonics Series concerts for local college students.

Despite the challenges of the economy, we continued to add to the repertoire of our offerings to the community. In 2003-2004,this included:• Releasing our CD of music by Tchaikovsky with acclaimed pianist Olga Kern on the harmonia mundi usa label. Ms. Kern

graced us with a solo recital to celebrate the release.• Expanding the popular Symphony 101 Series to Rochester’s west side with an additional Sunday matinee concert

at Roberts Wesleyan College, thanks in part to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and support fromPAETEC Communications.

• Adding a special orKIDStra Holiday concert for children ages 3-9 and their families to share the magical music of the holiday season. Other special concerts included Opening Night Celebration with the brilliant pianist Emanuel Ax and an evening with vocalist k.d. lang.

• Collaborating with local arts organizations, including Rochester City Ballet for The Nutcracker; Geva Theatre Center andRochester Opera Factory for a special presentation of Guys and Dolls to benefit AIDS Rochester; and the Eastman School of Music for a concert featuring student soloists. We also continued the award-winning Concert Companion radio program with WXXI 91.5 FM.

During 2003-2004, we celebrated Jeff Tyzik’s 10th anniversary as RPO Principal Pops Conductor with a special concert and his own collectable bobblehead! Jeff regularly amazes me with the originality of the music he selects, arranges and composes, and the way he showcases the talents of the orchestra’s principal musicians with solo appearances. Some of the WPOP Serieshighlights included a tribute to Nat King Cole with jazz musician John Pizzarelli, an evening of swinging big band with NewYork Voices, award-winning film scores by Randy Newman, Broadway hits with the singers of Bravo Broadway and the annualfavorite Gala Holiday Pops with the 200-voice Festival High School Chorale.

Michael Butterman, the RPO’s Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach (The Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair), continued to offer engaging concerts for children and their families through the orKIDStra Series. From the classic Peter and the Wolf to the hilarious musical visit by the alien “Moodle,” Michael’s programs both educate and entertain. In addition, 20,600 children from preschool through sixth grade attended daytime orchestra concerts with their schools, and teachersreceived extensive curriculum guides to prepare students for the concerts. Michael also conducts Casual Sunday Matinees and free Around the Town concerts that bring orchestral music to the community in places of worship and community centers.

I think George Eastman would be pleased to see where the Orchestra is today—a world-class organization supported by thecommunity with concerts that enhance Rochester’s reputation as a great place to live, work and raise a family. Thanks to theannual investment in the Orchestra by all those who give generously, share their time and talents, and of course purchase ticketsto concerts, the Orchestra can continue to give back to the community—not only in concerts and outreach activities, but also in the indefinable value of music which has the power to transport us beyond our everyday concerns. Music is a universal language that connects us all and I look forward to many more magical moments with your RPO.

M E S S A G E F R O M T H E C H A I R A N D T H E P R E S I D E N T

Dear RPO Members:

Since its founding in 1922 by George Eastman, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has provided a broad range of concerts for children and adultsthroughout Rochester and our region. With a commitment to the highest level of artistic quality and comprehensive music education and outreach programs, we serve hundreds of thousands of people annually with our programs, as you’ll see detailed below.

Even in the face of challenging times, we remain true to our purpose, striving always to inspire and enrich the community through the art of music. Our conductors and musicians perform at the highest artistic levels so Rochesterians can continue to enjoy the orchestral music that has helped shape our community for the last 82 years.

Although we have balanced our operating budget for seven of the last nine years, we had an operating loss of $209,085 for the fiscal year ending August 31,2004. Because of some modest gains in our investment portfolio, our accumulated net deficit grew by only $58,000 to $1,423,152.

Expenses were virtually flat against FY2003, but there were three revenue areas of concern in FY2004: the number of individual donors was down from the previous year, and total donations from individuals were down by nearly 10%; ticket sales were down by 4%; and government funding was down byanother 10%. In light of these challenges, the orchestra musicians, conductors and staff sacrificed through wage and benefit concessions, while also workingto control expenses—all without sacrificing artistic quality and service to the community. Be assured that all of us at the RPO continue to work for bothshort- and long-term solutions to the ongoing financial challenges faced by us all.

One year ago, in January 2004, we successfully completed a $300,000 challenge grant offered by six dedicated and visionary donors who recognized ourneed to leverage more contributions from individual donors. More than 5,700 individual donors made new or increased gifts that were matched dollar-for-dollar by this grant. We’re also pleased to recognize our own Board of Directors and Honorary Board, who increased their total annual campaign giving by 32% over the previous year.

Although space does not allow us to recognize all of the important contributions made to the RPO during 2003-04, we would be remiss if we did notthank the more than 950 volunteers who gave so generously of their time. We are particularly grateful to the seemingly tireless committee of volunteers and more than 30 talented interior and landscape designers who transformed the American Association of University Women’s house on East Avenue intoSymphony Showhouse 2004, a very successful fundraising event.

Concert attendance, annual campaign gifts and volunteer contributions all help your RPO inspire the community. We sincerely thank you for recognizingthat orchestral music enriches all of our lives and for your annual investment which helps make this possible.
