What has changed?

On January 1st 2001 a new standard came into force in the countries of the European Union: EN 12195-2.Before that date there was no uniformity in Europe as it came to the indication of a ”strength” of a strap assembly. Almost every country in Europe had its own rules or even no rules in this field. In short: It was not always clear, exept in countries like Great-Britain and Germany, how companies came to their ”Breaking Strength” figures and what they exactly ment with those figures. From January 1st 2001 there is an identical standard for every country in the EU regarding to the defini-tion of lashing capacity of a strap assembly. For some countries in the EU, like Great-Britain and Germany, things did not change that much. But for most other EU countries two important features came from the new European Standard:1. A built in Safety Factor for every component type

of a strap assembly (pict. 1: A,B en C) was intro-duced;

2. This resulted in a new term: Lashing Capacity, indi-cating the ”safe load capacity” of a strap assembly.

Which terms are used by LOAD-LOK® in Europe?

LOAD-LOK® is present in 9 countries of the European Union. It is obvious that the European LOAD-LOK® companies use the (English) terms and abbreviations from the EN 12195-2 standard: e.g. BS = Breaking StrengthSF = Safety FactorLC = Lashing Capacity

What do those abbreviations mean?

BS (Breaking Strength)Breaking Strength is a well-known term. It defines the force (daN) needed to break a strap assembly (pict. 1: D) or a single component (pict. 1: A,B en C). Some times the new EN value for Breaking Strength will show the same figure as it had before January 1st 2001.

SF (Safety Factor)The Safety Factor has been introduced to create a value considered to be safe. The Safety Factor for metal components is 2 (pict. 1: A enC), the one for webbing is 3 (pict. 1: B).

LC (Lashing Capacity)Applying the Safety Factor on the components of a strap assembly results in ”Safe Breaking Strength fig-ures” for each strap component. The lowest value of those figures represents the Lashing Capacity with a built in safety factor: the Breaking Strength according to EN 12195-2.

An example (see also pict. 1):The BS of component A (hook) is 5000 daN. The ‘safe value for component A is (5000 : 2 =) 2500 daN.The BS value for component B (webbing) is 6000 daN. The ‘safe value’ for component B is (6000 : 3 =) 2000 daN.The BS value for component C (ratchet) is 6000 daN. The ‘safe value’ for component C is (6000 : 2 =) 3000 daN.De LC (Lashing Capacity value results in 2000 daN (=the lowest ‘safe value’ of all components.

daN or kg?

According to the international S.I.-units system we shouls use ”Newton” (N) as a unit to indicate forces (loads).But: 10 Newton is about 1 kg. Using daN (1 daN = 10N) makes it easier for us to com-pare the ”new” (N) values with the ”old” (kg) values.
