Elephants have tough grey skin and large ears. They have a long nose called a trunk that they use to drink water. Elephants trunks can grow up to two metres long and some scientists believe that they contain up to 100,000 muscles! Elephants might all look the same at first glance but there are actually two different species: African elephants and Asian elephants. African elephants have bigger ears than Asian elephants but they both have tusks to protect them from other animals.

For each question below, first underline the key words before scanning to find them in the text.

1. How long can an elephant’s trunk grow?

2. Which species of elephant has the biggest ears?

You’ve probably heard people using the word ‘horse’ for both horses and ponies. This is because they are both members of the horse family. However, any horse measuring up to 14.2 hands (‘hands’ is a measurement that is used to measure horses – 1 hand is equal to 10cm) is called a pony. Anything taller is called a horse.Horses and ponies come in lots of different colours. Some of the colours have names that you will recognise, like brown or black, but some are more unusual. For example, a ‘bay’ horse has a brown body but a black mane, tail and legs, and a ‘skewbald’ has brown and white patches.

For each question below, first underline the key words before scanning to find them in the text.

3. How tall can a pony be?

4. What is one ‘hand’ equal to in centimetres?
