Priyanka has pushedRahul 'out of the frame':

Jaitley's dig at the GandhisNEW DELHI: BJP leaderArun Jaitley on Friday took asnipe at Priyanka Gandhi say-ing by using somewhat impo-lite language againstNarendra Modi every day shehas succeeded in "robbing herbrother from being in thelimelight" and pushed him "outof the frame".

"Ostensibly intendedto attack Narendra Modi dailyin somewhat impolite lan-guage, the sister has suc-ceeded in robbing the brotherfrom being in the limelight.Attack Modi was the strategybut 'dilute Rahul' is the con-sequence...

"Having pushed thebrother out of the frame, thesister has to realize that thereis much more in politics andthe country than only 'ourfamily'," Jaitley said in anarticle. The BJP leader alsocharged the Congress withshowing desperation, sayingthe likelihood of a BJP-NDAgovernment at the Centre

headed by Narendra Modi hasresulted in courtesies and ra-tionality slipping out of theCongress's campaign.

Jaitley also urged hisown partymen and supportersto concentrate only on threeissues - development, leader-ship and stability.

"Visibly losing thevote of India the Congresscreated an impression that theheart and idea of India are stilla Congress property. The ar-gument did not cut much ice.

"The eclipse ofRahul Gandhi as the defactoprime ministerial candidate ofCongress is virtually com-plete.

When he was notseen as being able to deliver, the mother stepped in. Thefocus has now shifted to thesister," he said.

?Jaitley said there isa streak of "misguided ag-gression" in the Congress, asit was trying to leave the vot-ers more and more confused.

EDITORIAL.....Seventh round of Lok Sabha

polls may throw up interesting resultsWith 89 seats up for grabs, theseventh round of Lok Sabhapolls featured high-profilecandidates cutting across partylines. While both BJP's PMcandidate Narendra Modi(Vadodara) and Cong-resspresident Sonia Gandhi (RaeBareli) are expected to wintheir seats comfortably, amuch closer result is expectedin Amritsar where BJP's ArunJaitley is pitted againstCongress's Amarinder Singh.Similarly, a tricky three-waytussle in Lucknow featuringBJP president Rajnath Singh,Congress's Rita Bahuguna andAAP's Jaaved Jaaferi couldspring a surprise even thoughRajnath appears to have theupper hand. Meanwhile, BJPveterans L K Advani(Gandhinagar) and MurliManohar Joshi (Kanpur) areexpected to ride to victory onthe Modi wave.

That said, the contestin Punjab may buck nationaltrends and serve up googlies. The ruling SAD-BJP combineis facing stiff anti-incum-bency at the state level. Con-tributing to this is the drugmenace in Punjab, with theAkali-led state governmentbeing ineffectual in curbingthe problem.

This not only givesCongress a chance to gainsome ground but also leavesroom for AAP to put up a goodperformance. Admittedly,

AAP was slow off the blockand fielded candidates withlinks to the erstwhileKhalistan movement. How-ever, there are signs that theelectorate is getting frustratedwith Punjab`s bipolar politics, creating scope for AAP tomake serious inroads.

The other interestingbattle being waged is inTelangana where Lok Sabhaelections and polls to the yetto be created state assemblytook place simultaneously.Congress's failure to stitch upa pre-poll alliance with TRShad dampened its hopes of get-ting a good harvest of seatsfrom the newly created 29thstate of the republic. But withthe possibility of a hung as-sembly looming, the two par-ties may be forced to joinhands. That in turn should fa-cilitate a post-poll understand-ing between Congress and TRSat the national level.

While Punjab andTelangana may turn out to bebright spots for Congressfrom the seventh round ofpolling, BJP is looking for aclean sweep in Gujarat andcentral UP. Although BJP'sdominance in the Gujarat as-sembly hasn't exactly trans-lated into the same kind ofdominance when it comes toLok Sabha seats from the state,Modi's pitch for PM shouldgalvanise Gujarat's electoratein favour of the saffron party.

Extreme wet and dry spells ups riskof flooding, drought in central India

Too much of something is in-deed bad. Such is in the caseof weather patterns in cen-tral India, where research-ers found out that there hasbeen a significant change inthe wet and dry seasons ofthe region, a huge jump fromthe patterns recorded in thelast 60 years.

A study by a groupof researchers in StanfordUniversity found out that thelikely cause for the fluctua-tions in the spells are thechanges in the winds andmoisture level of the atmo-sphere, but it is still too soonto blame climate change forit.

"There are manypredictions that globalwarming should causeheavier downpours andmore frequent dry spells,"said Noah Diffenbaugh, se-nior author of the study."That's what we've foundhere, but India is a complexregion, so we want to besure before we point the fin-ger at global warming or anyother cause."

The study centeredon one of the most impor-tant weather systems in theworld that brings the Indiansubcontinent 85 percent ofits rainfall every year - theSouth Asia monsoon. Indiais one of the most populouscountries on Earth and it ishighly dependent on its ag-riculture sector. Hence, In-dia is also heavily reliant on

the monsoon. But what hap-pens if they receive toomuch of the extremes?

In the months whencrops are usually grown, drought can result to a worstcase scenario of crop fail-ure. On the other hand, shortbut intense heavy rain fallsmay result in anotherMaharashtra and Gujaratfloods of 2005, leaving thou-sands of bodies in theirwake.

In the study, if therehas been three or more suc-cessive days that haverained heavily or lowly, theyare to be considered as wetand dry spells in that order.

With data from theIndian Meteorological De-partment and other sources, the team evaluated rain fallsbetween two specific peri-ods: from 1951 to 1980 andfrom 1981 to 2011, thenchose the peak months of

July and August.While the technique

used in gathering and ana-lyzing data was deemed"off-the-shelf" and "classi-cal" as it employs observa-tions on spatial and tempo-ral relationships, the findingssupported accounts from In-dian farmers who have per-sonally felt the changes overthe years."My grandfathergrew up in a village that isprimarily dependent on ag-riculture, and the farmersthat live there say that themonsoon rainfall pattern haschanged," lead author of thestudy Deepti Singh, whosefamily resides in a regionusually hit by the monsoon, shared. "They've noticedover the last decade thatrainfall occurs in heavybursts and comes earlier inthe monsoon season, andthat the dry spells lastlonger."
