STUART CORBRIDGE*University of CambridgeSummary.- - David Booth argues that Marxist development studies cannot escape a metatheoreticalcommitment to demonstrating the necessity of economic and social patterns, as distinct fromexplaining them. This paper concurs in respect of neo-Marxism and classical Marxism, each ofwhich suffers from economism, essentialism and epistemologicalfiat. The paper breaks with Boothin seeing hese sins as characteristic also of non-Marxist development studies. It further argues thatan emerging post-Marxism is well placed to interpret a world economy itself becoming postmodern.The work of the Regulation School and the postimperialists is outlined as part of this new approach.

1. INTRODUCTIONIn an imp ortant paper published in W o r l d D eve l -

opment , David Booth argues that "there is a basicproblem with Marxian theory as an input to devel-opment sociology that transcends the particularforms in which it has been manifested" (Booth,1985, p. 773). Booth con tends (1) that Marx ism hasa "metatheoretical commitment to demons tratingthat what happens in societies in the era of capi-talism is not only explicable, but also in somestronger sense necessary" (p. 773); (2) that thiscommitment is disclosed in the process of mapp ingthe concept of the capitalist mode of productiononto concrete social formations; and (3) thatMarxism is unable to recognize the richness ofthe development experience as it is wrought un dershifting systems of culture and class formation.Very wisely, Booth is loathe to define Marxismexcept in terms of a commitment to a theory ofworkplace exploitation and to an emphasis uponclass struggle. (A similar approach will be takenhere.) Nevertheless, Booth insists that his remarksapply to Marxism tou t cour t and not to neo-Marx-ism or classical Marxism alone. Booth concludesthat there is no satisfactory middle position"between the polarized paradigms of the 1970s"(1985, p. 776). If development sociology need notgive up an interest in Marxism, it "must be fre ed. ..from Marxism's ulterior interest in proving thatwithin given limits the world has to be the way itis" (1985, p. 777; emphasis in the original).Booth's paper is a telling contribution to devel-opment studies and to the debate on the crisis ofMarxism. It has also sparked an int riguin g debateon the way out of the impasse in radical devel-

opment studies. Already in this jour nal Peter Van-dergeest and Fred Buttel have published an incisivecommentary on "Marx, Weber and DevelopmentSociology" (Vandergeest and Buttel, 1988) andLeslie Sklair has essayed his thoughts on "Meta-theory, Theory and Empirical Research in Devel-opment Sociology" (Sklair, 1988). (Related con-tributions can be found in Bardhan, 1986;Chakravarty, 1987; and Mouzelis, 1988a.)This paper presents a third gloss on the impassein Marxist development studies (MDS). It aims,first, to place Booth's commentary on MDS in awider context. Section 2 rehearses the mainelements of Booth's thesis and endorses several ofits arguments. The paper then proceeds to arguemore firmly than does Booth that the crisis in MDSis one moment in a wider crisis of representationin social science. This is the substance of Section3. The paper argues that the Object of developmentstudies -- the world system -- has been trans-formed so radically since the late 1960s that it hasbegun to resist the convention al narratives of thediscipline. The rise of the newly industrializedcountries (NICs) and of the producer power of theOrganization of Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC), the relative decline of US hegemony, thebreakup of the Bretton Woods system, and newdevelopments in the socialist bloc might each beseen as moments in the construction of a worldsystem which some have called "postmodern.
