Live Auction.. Raffles, Raffles, Raffles!!! Look for your invitation in the mail next week! Important date: February 14: Coffee, Croissants and Curriculum, with a special emphasis on Elementary Math. Change of date: The next Board Meeting will take place in the School Library on Tuesday, February 28, (not February 14) starting at 7p.m. In today’s world, where students are turning more to on-line learning, here are seven attributes that every student should have or need to develop for successful online learning: 1. You have to have a sense of self. Successful learners online have an awareness of metacognition -- self-motivation, self- starting, and ownership of one’s actions. In other words, they reflect on how they learn as well as what they learn. 2. You need to be able to manage your time wisely. They must be able to lay out their tasks with a critical eye, plan them accordingly, and follow them through to fruition -- many times without someone looking over their shoulder. 3. You have GOT to know how to collaborate. This is a biggie. More than an understanding of technology, more than a perfection of writing skills, the ability to collaborate is one that must be used comfortably online. 4. You need to be able to set goals for yourself. Being able to see the target and backwards plan towards that target is vital. 5. You need to communicate well in writing. The entire online community is based on the language of words and how to communicate them effectively. One cannot use texting language and expect to be heard. A student needs to use their best level of writing. 6. You must follow the community norms. Just like a classroom has a set of rules, so does an online class. A student must function within the norms and rules of netiquette set up by the instructor (or, better yet, agreed upon by the class itself). 7. You must be your own advocate. As slam poet Taylor Mali once wrote when asked if they would be tested on the material, “If not you, then who?” So does it go with being one’s own advocate. If you won’t ask the questions, take control, and make sure your voice is heard in a positive way…then who will? SHARKThe American International School of Rotterdam

From the Secondary Principal and Curriculum Director

Thank you to those parents who joined our MAP training sessions.  We hope you were able to learn a little bit more about MAP at AISR and what it means for your children.

Next Thursday and Friday we are honored to be hosting a conference on Literacy Coaching for 27 participants from around the world. Two AISR teachers, Tenley Elliott and Beth Willen, are part of this cohort and AISR will benefit greatly from their expertise. The following week some of our own teachers will be receiving some training from the facilitator of this conference, Carrie Ekey, and are looking forward to learning more about literacy instruction from an expert in the field.

In the Classrooms:Students began the 2012-2013 Course Registration process this week. Each grade received a registration form with the courses listed on it that are available to that grade. Registration forms must be brought home for parent/guardian signature and are due on Thursday, February 15, 2012. Please contact our School Counselor, Sharice Welch, with any specific registration questions.

There will also be an IB information session for parents of students in grade 10 next Wednesday, February 8th at 5:00 in the Director's office. Please RSVP to Marga Akerboom if you are interested in attending the session.

As you may know, interactive white boards have been installed in some of our classrooms this year. Teachers will be trained on how to use the interactive software this Friday, February 3rd.

Upcoming Dates:• MAP Testing for students is ongoing• IB Information Evening: Wednesday, February 8th at 5:00• MS Basketball at AISR: Wednesday, February 8th at 3:30• JV Girls Basketball at AIS: Thursday, February 9th at 3:30• Literacy Coaching Conference: Thursday, February 9th and Friday, February 10th

Food for ThoughtWhat is MAP Testing?MAP, also called Measure of Academic Progress, is a norm referenced test administered on a computer. The test is adaptive to the student’s responses and provides a score called a RIT. This score then corresponds to the current achievement level of the student along a vertical scale.

Why do we give this test anyway? MAP tests are individualized and self-adjusting to each and every student. This supports our mission at AISR to maximize individual success by helping us understand each student’s unique learning profile.

Please don't hesitate to contact me at anytime for further information or if you have any questions or concerns. I can be reached at [email protected] or by calling the school at extension 316. Enjoy your weekend!

Regards,Alison [email protected]
