Nothing to cheer about inthe country under BJP rule: Lalu

PATNA: RJD president Lalu Prasadon Friday said there was nothing tocheer about in the country in the newyear under BJP rule and said theparty's downfall would start fromBihar in the assembly poll this year.

"We wish each other happyNew Year but I see nothing to cheerabout in the country this time underBJP rule," Prasad said.

"The way things are chang-ing with them(BJP) at the helm, likereligious conversion of the poor, min-isters using unparliamentary languagefor opposition leaders, and glorifica-tion of Nathuram Godse ...that dayis not far when they will replace tri-color with their saffron flag," the RJDchief alleged.

On BJP's winning streak instate elections inMaharastra,Haryana, Jammu &Kashmir and Jharkhand after victoryin Parliamentary election, Prasad saidit was due to "people falling in thetrap of their (BJP's) false promises."

"Prime Minister NarendraModi hoodwinked voters in all thesestates by promising to make themnumber one state in the country," hesaid and asked, "have Maharashtraand Haryana become number onestate as he had promised?"

Prasad said merger of par-ties in old Janata Parivar had beencompleted except for someformalities."Dil mil gaya hai to samjhovilay ho gaya hain, bus ab kewal kagajpar kaam baki hain (convergence ofour heart means merger of JanataParivar has been achieved only someformalities are left to be completed

on paper)," he said.About old acrimony with

JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar andwhether workers of the two partieswould forget their differences,Prasad refused to accept that Kumarconspired to send him to jail in amulti-crore fodder scam case and in-stead blamed BJP leaders for it.

"Nitish Kumar was not apetitioner against me. Rather it wasBJP leaders Sushil Kumar Modi andRavishankar Prasad who had goneto court against me," he said.

He said it was in his fate togo to jail and "I do not accept NitishKumar responsible for it."

Claiming BJP's downfall willbegin from Bihar in the assembly polllater this year, the RJD chief said di-vision of votes had helped BJP winin the general election in the state andhighlighted RJD's 29 per cent voteand JD(U)'s 19 per cent vote sharein the polls.

On BJP claiming return of"Jungle Raj II" in the wake of joiningof hands between RJD and JD(U),Prasad said these were words of"frustration" of BJP fearing the com-bined strength.

Speeding bus kills one, injures many in Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: One man waskilled and a dozen were injured by aspeeding Chandigarh Transport Un-dertaking bus in Sector 42 on Friday.

The bus, which rammed intoa rikshaw outside Chandigarh Insti-tute of Hotel Management, criticallyinjured the man sitting in it. It gotstuck in the green divider belt on roadwhen passengers claimed that a girlstanding on the divider had comeunder it.The traffic police and districtauthorities then decided to overturnthe bus to rescue the trapped girl,Ankita Sharma, a college student. The girl was rescued by a cop AjayKumar, who was appointed in thearea police beat. Traffic police cranewas used for the purpose.

But while doing so, a dozen

passengers were injured, who weresitting inside the bus.

All the injured were taken tothe Government Multi-speciality Hos-pital in Sector 16 where the man wasdeclared brought dead. The girl sus-tained fractures on her leg. Otherpassengers sustained minor injuries.

Police said that CTU driver,Bhupinder SIngh, managed to escapefrom the spot. Hunt for him is on.

Introduce shareauto and call taxies

The minimum auto fare, which hasbeen increased in recent past ismaking holes in the pockets ofcommon man. Even if someonewishes to go to District Court Gatefrom Secretariat exit gate, whichis hardly 10 mtrs, he has to pay Rs.15 now, instead of Rs. 10.According to many regular com-muters, hike in fuel price is just thelatest excuse for the auto driversto demand more fare.

Many believe that theway in which the minimum autofare has been fixed is wrong. Theminimum auto fare must be Rs.10.Surprisingly instead of asking autodrivers to charge fares from cus-tomers as per auto-meter the Ad-ministration is encouraging them tocharge from passengers, as pertheir guess work rate.

Many believe that in-creasing the auto fares is not aproblem, the problem is even after

this the Auto Drivers will fleececustomers and cry about the stateof affairs. The frustrating experi-ences of many commuters are alive example to prove the rampantdemands by many auto drivers.

The saddest party is thatAuto drivers, taxi drivers have gottheir own associations to presstheir own un-fare demands but,who cares about common man? Isthere any Association for a com-mon man who pays this heavy autofares.

Perhaps this is the time forAdministration to introduce share-autos in Andaman, in which a loneperson, one can travel paying less. The Administration must also startfew call taxi centres at differentareas like Junglighat, Haddo,Haddo Port etc. for the conve-nience of general public and savethem from exploitation. Let therebe healthy competition.

New compound to killcancer cells identified

A small molecule that resetsthe ‘biological clock’ of can-cer cells can help shrink tu-mour growth and lead to po-tential new therapy to treatcancer, says a research. Themolecule called 6-thio-2’-deoxyguanosine (6-thiodG)can stop the growth of can-cer cells, the findings showed.

“We observed broadefficacy against a range ofcancer cell lines with verylow concentrations of 6-thiodG,” said Jerry Shay, pro-fessor at University of TexasSouthwestern Medical Centrein the US.The researchers didnot observe serious side ef-fects in the blood, liver andkidneys of the mice that weretreated with 6-thiodG. Themolecule acts by targeting aunique mechanism that isthought to regulate how longcells can stay alive, a type ofageing clock. This biologicalclock is defined by DNA struc-

tures known as telomeres, which cap the ends of the cell’schromosomes to protect themfrom damage and which be-come shorter every time thecell divides.

Once telomeres haveshortened to a critical length, the cell can no longer divideand dies though a processknown as apoptosis. However, cancer cells are normally pro-tected from this death by anRNA protein complex calledtelomerase, which ensures thattelomeres do not shorten withevery division. But 6-thiodGcan be used to disrupt the nor-mal way cells maintain telom-ere length.

“Since telomerase isexpressed in almost all humancancers, this work representsa potentially innovative ap-proach to targeting telomerase-expressing cancer cells withminimal side effects on normalcells,” Mr. Shay pointed out.

New drug combo found highlyeffective for kids' malaria treatment

The new research was con-ducted by University ofWestern Australia whereinkids with Plasmodiumfalciparum infections wereexamined. Some of the chil-dren examined had Plasmo-dium vivax infections.

The searchers dur-ing the study found thatartemisinin-naphthoquinewas not infer ior toartemether-lumefantrine intreating Plasmodiumfalciparum infection, how-ever, it was found to be moreeffective in treating Plas-modium vivax infections.

The study pointedout that there are two spe-cies of Papua New Guineanamely Plasmodium vivaxand Plasmodium falciparumwhich are responsible for

most of the malaria infec-tions and likewise have twosepa rate ant i-mala r ialdrugs.Tim Davis from theUniversity of Western Aus-tralia concluded that the tol-erability, safety as well aseffectiveness of three ev-eryday doses ofartemisinin-naphthoquinedrugs should be considered

together along with otherpresently available combi-nation drugs for treatingsimple malaria in PapuaNew Guinea and similarepidemiologic situationswith transmission of manyPlasmodium species.
